View Full Version : Building my render/gaming rig. - Advices needed

Hi guys,

I need an advice for my future gaming/render rig. Recently i read a lot of bad feedback for the motherboard i wanna buy, and i need a more realistic approach and comments, this will help me decide. I don't know a lot of computers just the basics, don't plan to overclocked the system and such, just connected the devices and start working/playing.

I plan to buy this:

-Crosshair V Formula/ThunderBolt
-Corsair Vengeance® — 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit
-AMD FX-8150 FX 8-Core Black Edition Processor

I already have an nvidia 470GTX(which sometime in the future i will change for their warm up issues ._.) but for now i will stay with that. The machine will be use as a decent workstation, for playing games, make 3D renders, and design work.

So what do you think? I mostly need advices if any of those components will gave me troubles(hardware/software) and how to solve them.
Aside of that if do you think i will need a water cooling solution for any of those?
and at last, i read a lot of bad comments for buying that motherboard, mostly for manufacturer issues. Those are true? i mean there's a % of damaged hardware, but if there's more people complaining is ..because something is happening; so what are your thoughts.

I really appreciate your feedback guys, thanks a lot!

If the thunderbolt is a critical part of your set up then good, otherwise loose it. Not a fan do not like it and would not ever suggest that someone buy that combo. :)

For rendering the 8150 is great and you will be pleased with it.

The board is seriously a great board, the reason you hear problems is because the only time folks post on a support forum is because they need help. And from the few times I have helped I would say a fair proportion of those issues were self inflicted. The Thunderbolt I do not like. So get the version without one if it is cheaper.

Oh lord, i didn't knew the reply would be so fast, thank you thank you thank you! :)

So, HiVizMan, i just wanna say thanks, i really appreciate your thoughts, today i was planning what i can do.
My budget is: $800 and i don't wanna waste in something doesn't work or give me troubles, so i think i'm more calm now.

I didn't knew the thunderbolt itself, was the problem; in fact i thought it would be the best; and No., the thunderbolt is not part of the thing i need for my work; sound like a nice feature but well... i prefer to omit that piece.

Have 4 more question.
- The version without the thunderbolt, have exactly the same specs, right?
- The case i have already is an Sentey Arvina GS-6400, you think there would be a problem of size and such(a video here http://youtu.be/JvsL40VJ6T8)
- The motherboard itself support FX-8150 right out of the BOX? Or i need another processor, install it, update the bios, and then put the fx-8150 on it?
- Another thing i hear a lot and read(in amazon for example) is that, it has manufacturer issues and the board always are damaged ._.

You know, i'm afraid to spent a lot on the board; i'm not from usa, i'm from ecuador; and if thats the case i will need a refund and send the device back and blablabla more money, money that i don't have. So i wanna be sure of all of this.
Like i said before, theres always a dead on arrival issue; not everything is perfect, but in general terms everything is fine?

If i buy this, this would be my rig:

-Asus Crosshair V Formula
-Corsair Vengeance® — 16GB Dual Channel DDR3 Memory Kit
-AMD FX-8150 FX 8-Core Black Edition Processor
-Corsair Professional Series™ Gold AX850 Fully-Modular Power Supply
-PNY Geforce GTX470
-Samsung 500GB HD502HJ

Thanks a lot! after these questions i'll be more confident. =D need this machine in less than 3 weeks ;)

I would look at some other ram options since you are going AMD - the vengeance range have not filled me with joy to date. But many many people are happy with them.

Other than that it is looking good.

Hi, yes i was looking out for some other options, the thing is that, i only saw in the compatibility memory list, the board supports 16GB on Corsair; and i've been reading it's very picky on that side and need to buy no other than from that list.
And please, please.. read my questions above, those are my doubts about this rig.

so.. what do i do?

- The case i have already is an Sentey Arvina GS-6400, you think there would be a problem of size and such(a video here http://youtu.be/JvsL40VJ6T8) No problem your case can handle a E-ATX
- The motherboard itself support FX-8150 right out of the BOX? Or i need another processor, install it, update the bios, and then put the fx-8150 on it? All depends when the motherboard was boxed, but three months has passes so new BIOS should be standard. Maybe better to buy local? OR contact the retailer in USA you are buying from and ask them to make sure.
- Another thing i hear a lot and read(in amazon for example) is that, it has manufacturer issues and the board always are damaged ._. I would suggest buying from a local vendor even if you have to pay more - that way you can take away two of your four questions as possible problem areas.

I do not know much about ASUS in Ecuador so not rally able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks a lot for the info!.
It doesnt matter if i have to switch a little minutes the processor, right now i have a phenomII x3; so i could update the bios(if i needed) and then put the FX on it.
Asus Ecuador, does not exist, don't worry; and about a local vendor, that is kinda hard to find, in fact no one bothers to import this motherboard because of the bad feedback, but i wanna give it a try.., so wish me luck.
All the stuff i wanna buy i had to import it, people here is a... c*#&%! all the things they buy is old and people usually believes is the best in the market. =/

I recently read like 30 reviews on amazon, most of them are from 2011, and receive 4to5 stars, good recommendations, etc; few guys didn't have lucky, so.. is not a bad motherboard after all.

Thanks for the reply, i really really appreciate; i'm decided now =D at my own risk. And if i have troubles with the settings of the UEFI and such, i'll post those here.

So, i'm almost ready to install windows, but i have a few questions before i send the elf to destroy it.

-I read that, i need to deactivate some options in the bios that are a pain in the a... so i can continue installation or something like that.
-Another will be if i need to Update the bios. Somebody mention that depends on the version of the motherboard, can you explain me that part, please. What do i need to look in the motherboard before install it?

Hello Tenshi!

Good to see you also joined the Crosshair V Formula Club :D

If you really do a lot of designing and rendering on your system I think a key component is missing: An SSD
Using the SSD to install your OS and Video/photo Editing Software and other frequently used programs.
You will benefit from the SSD not just because it boots so fast (you dont even have time to get a cup of coffee), but when rendering your system wil be able to do that a lot faster than on a normal HDD.

I have 2 SSD's in RAID0 both 120 Gb, but even with OS and lot of Software its quite easy to keep it Arround 100 Gb. So a 120 Gb SSD would suffice. Choose one that support the 6 Gb Sata connection to get optimum speed. Which Brand?? So many people so many choices .. But look at Read/Write speeds compared to price range. Intel, OCZ, Adata are just a few possibilities.

Maybe you already know al this, but if not now you do!
Greetings

Henkenator68NL, thanks for the suggestion! I knew a lot about SSD. =D I will upgrade sometime in the future.

Hi again guys, i have some doubts. When i install win7 from the disk, its important i have a wire keyboard connected, i mean i have a cordless logitech mx5500, and i'm reading that formula has some troubles detecting the ports and stuff, Do i need one normal keyboard at least at the beginning of the installation?

Tenshi,

Check this site : http://www.wintobootic.com/

Read how to make usb stick bootable.

If USB is bootable, copy the bios ( = the .ROM file) to the USB device

Stick usb in you're new systeem

Boot Up, Hit Delete to get in BIOS setup screen
Go to Tool Tab
Select Asus Easy Flash 2 Utility
Press Tab to go to Drive Field
Use Up / Down keys to find you're usb (just created bootable usb device)
Press Tab to go to Folder Field
Select the BIOS file you copied onto it
Press Enter
Wait till its Finished
Reboot
Taddaaaaaaaa
you're done

What I would do is this.

Before I install my OS I only have the hard drive that the OS will be installed on connected. Just the OS drive.

Once I have done my install then I add the other hard drives. That what the BIOS does not get confused. :)

If it aint broke why fix it? What I mean by that is if the current BIOS works fine why upadte? If you have never used the BIOS and this is a first install then update before your install OS. Does not make much different anyhow.

Updating BIOS just for the sake of having the latest BIOS does not always make sense, at least to me.

this is why I ask to someone who just post a link to a new BIOS " What they have change" I run my Crosshair on the 1102, because that was the one available when I get it, I just place a 1090t in to update to the 1102 because I need support for the FX , it'S run fine on it since few months, why should I update ? 1. There's a way i could save all the info that the bios provide me, so i can upload here and you guys tell me what it's wrong and need to fix it, i think some numbers are wrong, as well some settings. Or there's a way to put them at default.

Yes please tell me where i can download Fan Expert, and i'll try now the bios option.

Update: where's the "Silent" option, or where i can set that, i was looking the Fan Control Options there and nothing..
I download the Asus Fan Expert, and it says that it doesn't support the board. ._. . So what i do?

Update2: Ok, i did it, i used the silent setting, everything is

Btw i update the Bios to the last one 1301.
(thanks for soon reply)

It depends on your CPU cooler, For your cooler those temps are okay. I normally use a more robust cooling solution

Yes i plan to use the best corsair i could find, it's a list of other stuff i need to buy in a few months(I'll post here so you can guide me too =D), i don't plan to stick with the stock coolers, neither for the gpu and the cpu, but for now i want everything almost stable, to work in some 3D stuff.

This are my new temps(can i make the images smaller? or put only the direct links, don't want to kill people eyes with so much red)

http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/7686/pic03yg.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/545/pic03yg.png/)

I really want to make some stressfull test, for the Ram, cpu and Gpu. Can you recommend me a good software for that? So after that i upload the data and you see if there's a problem. Maybe voltages with ram/cpu, or the gpu.
(hate to bother people, but i'm learning...thanks in adv)

I am not sure what you mean about things being wrong. Your CPU is at 3.9GHz so not sure what more you want from that setting.

HiVizMan!!! Thanks for the input; but i didn't know that. Have a few more questions:

-1)Ram are ok? I mean do i need to put those corsair at 1600 or 1333 as the QVL says?
-2)About Dram command rate. 1T or 2T?
-3)Heat is ok in general? There's a way to see the heat from the Ram?
-4) In my last computer, the lan cable on the back of the case always were "green", but now its "orange", that's ok? I was looking in the manual but i didn't find anything related.

Hi, Tenshi..
I have almost the same setup, if you are looking for good ram you can't go wrong with Corsair Dominator 1866 2X4 Gig Set, Also comes with the Cooling fans for on top.. Low voltage and great timing. If you need the 16 gig setup then buy 2 sets, I use photoshop, cad, and play several games Bf3, Dirt 3, Call of duty 4, and I only use 8gig of ram, never had a issue, I would try a bigger hard drive though, maybe a western digital 1 Tb black editon. solid drive.
Hope this helps. not sure if you have already baught all your parts yet.

Hello Guys again. I'm back with a few questions.

I cleaned my Cpu once again, applied thermal paste(artic mx-4) and i've been testing my pc, is doing good until i began to recieve some Warning messages that are freaking me out, i don't know why now it's putting those messages, the first time i installed the CPU doesnt give me those troubles. Like always i use the "drop" in center method to apply thermal paste, and the cooler do the rest. Then the UEFi gave me a message "New CPU installed,... " yes or no. And i applied all default settings, i just change the Fan Cooler from Disabled to Silent. Nothing more.

After that i began seeing videos on internet and saw a increment on temperature, which is weird, from 44 to 49. And then all those messages. Why is that? How can i fix it? And now i don't see the MemoryRam installed but in my "system" i see 16gb Installed. :S

Update: I turn off everything, and took away the Dimms, and put it on again. Now i don't get that problem, but my main problem now is the CPU.

Before this i could play BF3, without any trouble, but now i don't know what happen, but i get 60C dregrees when i open the game, in no more than 2 minutes of gaming and it tops the 60c, 61 is the max recommended for the Fx-8150, right? I re-applied new thermal paste, drop in the center the cooler do the rest, etc. =/ but i get almost the same temps.
Yes i know i need a better fan cooler for the CPU and the case(soon pictures), but as i said before i didn't have this troubles. Do i need to do anything more? Voltage? or something.. so many options and maybe some of them are wrong. Dont know, help me guys.

So i can't play anygame no more, i don't wanna know when i need to do 3d renders... )=

At the future i plan to buy a corsair h80. That would help a lot right?

I have few questions, but the FIRST one, is... CPU Cooler.

A few days ago i bought a Corsair A50, without investigating much(my bad -_-), i just read a few reviews and every one said it work good with amd motherboard. I didn't have a lot of money, so i though it was a well investment; but yesterday when i tried to put the cooler, oops, the 1st and 2nd Corsair Vengeance slot interfere with the fan and the cooler itself, so i was like  then  and then.. :( i was to disappointed that my money was.. well know..

So i think possible and crazy solutions...

a) change 2 memory sticks for low profile ram.
b) take away the 2 heatsinks of the 1st/2nd vengeance, order low profile heatsinks and paste again those on the vengeance, so the height don't bother me...
c) buy 4x4gb low profile corsair memories )= without those heatsinks
d) sell the corsair a50, look out for more money and buy a water cooler solution...(-_- i dont have money now!)
e) make a special metal bracket to change the "intel way" direction of the A50 on my formula v.

Yes, i know.. those are crazy and stupid ideas... but i just want to know, if someone else tried this setup before, i Need help, i'm desperate... my money is on that gigantic sh... i can't use )= or I can?

I contact Myk SilentShadow, who i saw had almost the same setup; he has G.Skill with heatsinks kinda equal to Vengeance... but i really don't know how to use the cooler. Amd has different design than Intel, so...
Horizontal or Vertical? )=

Hey mate, sorry for the huge delay in reply.

1st. I thought your RAM was the same height as mine - it's not unfortunately. Your best bet, would be to either remove the heatsinks from the first 2 modules(only if the circulation is good in your case and you're not overclocking) or you can see if you can return the RAM and get lower profile RAM. The heatsinks on my GSkill pretty much just wrap around the RAM so they don't stick up.

2nd. In the bottom picture of the post above mine, you have the cooler setup sitting correctly. Now all you need to do is use the big "D" looking piece of metal with the two bits hanging off either side. It needs to sit upside down, so the curve sits inside the groove between the fans and the pipes. When you fasten the latch in place...you must be very careful and gentle when you lock it down, otherwise you *could* potentially crack the CPU. I know, I did it years ago with one of my PC's...luckily the techs I took my rig to figure out why it wasn't working figured the motherboard killed the CPU...so I got a free replacement :p

Btw I hate with a complete disdain the "D" Latch method of clipping down the Cooler...AMD reaaaaaally needs to come up with a better mechanism. Every time I work on an AMD system and have to lock down the CPU Cooler I nearly $h1t my pants in fear that i'm gonna damage the CPU.

Don't worry for replying late. :D

[QUOTE]Your best bet, would be to either remove the heatsinks from the first 2 modules(only if the circulation is good in your case and you're not overclocking) or you can see if you can return the RAM and get lower profile RAM.

Returning is something i think i can't do, i'll try but i think the time from returning it's over; but if i could(miracle), would this low profile 4x4gb modules would work with the Crosshair Formula V? And btw i don't overclock anything so..
http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-Profile-1600mhz-PC3-12800/dp/B0058J1QII/ref=cm_cmu_pg__header

The second choice i think would be the only thing i can do now; but that gave me more questions, hope you or someone can help me here.

1) If i a remove gently the heatsinks from the modules nothing will happen right?
2) There is any brand in the market that sell Ram Heatsinks?
3) I was looking around ebay for heatsinks, i found many with brands unknown, in two materials: Aluminum and Copper. So what do you think would be the wise choice to buy? What material is better for my ram safety?

haha, thanks for the advice, but xD now i'm scared. Really i could damaged my cpu? O_O , i always try to do it gently but for example the default stock cooler well it's kinda hard to install at first; but this A50 seems a little more easy, it is?.. when you use the "D" bracket? (which i hate too! Why in the...h... corsair didn't come out with a better solution)

---
I have a few more questions, i plan to renew my default case fans and trying to maintain the aesthetics(blue leds) , because i think those aren't helping me with the airflow, maybe the ones that came has low RPM, because i don't feel to much aire at the back, front, etc. The ones that came are:
2 80mm
1 120mm (back)
2 120mm (top)
1 140mm (front)

Could someone recommend me the best brand out there for fans with good quality/low noise/airflow., and blue leds, too haha. 1200 rpm, 1600, 2000rpm?

Thanks!

Disclaimer: I have no experience in this field.
Removing heatsinks may be possible, if you are careful.
Copper is a better heat conductor, so that is likely the better choice.

Myk SilentShadow
10-06-2012, 01:50 PM
Yes mate, those modules will fit perfectly if you are unable to return the ones you currently have. And I would have to agree with Zygomorphic, Copper is a better conductor of heat. You can't blame Corsair for the D Latch locking mechanism, it's AMD entirely since they are the ones who create the sockets and the system used to lock the fans into place, P.I.T.A I know. And yeah, maybe I shouldn't have told you about the possibility of damaging the CPU, but since I learnt it the hard way first hand, I figured it would be only right to tell you one possibility. When you lock it down, just take your time and try not to get too carried away with it.

Tenshi
10-07-2012, 07:52 AM
Well, thanks to both of you!

I'll go with the Copper heatsinks then. Any brand? or it doesn't matter? I plan to buy those at ebay. I think i'm the only one who will do this "heatsinks change" in the world, right? xD

The other plan is to fix my airflow, the Fans. Any thoughts? Brands?

Myk SilentShadow, haha don't worry, i'll try to do it gently, even if i'm scared.

I'll post updates and pictures when the copper arrives, with luck at my country would be like 10-20 days xD

I wouldn't go with the corsair ax850, don't get me wrong it's a great psu but if you with a pc power and cooling 750W, 80+ silver, it's cheaper, enough wattage ( even for 2 cards in sli or crossfire ) and it's more efficient than the ax850. Pc power and cooling have me doing psu's for the last 30 years whilst corsair for the last 4-5 years.

It's worth a look :)

Hi guys!
Updated on my rig. But with more questions and i need help, because I'm starting to get crazy with this. Urgent! :(

So, i put the Corsair A50 to my Fx-8150, changing the heatsinks from 2 slots.

The first time i power on the computer temperature was 36C. Then after i reset, went to 40-42C. After looking around, resetting again was 40C-41, stable.

Ok, so i tried to test how much heat i can handle, because, before for games it went like 60Celcius in 1-2minutes. Now for 1-2 minutes, it stays between 48-52/53C.

But between playing Battlefield 3 (2-5minutes); i get several warnings, like the one in the image; i felt the top intake and was hot. Most of the warning were for "voltage", so that's something that's freak in me out and scared me, i don't know if my machine it's gonna explode; i Thought the Corsair A50 will be better than the default stock cooler; but.. i get high temperatures, too; and the same warnings.

I don't understand what the heck it's happening, i can't play any game just for this, because i'm worried. Neither 3d renders i think; so.. Tell me, somebody knows what is happening??? How can i fixed this? I don't have more money -_- .

Look at the image with the Fans/RPM. Is that a good set up?

Your temps are fine, so please calm yourself down lol. Oh and by the way..do not use both HWMonitor and AISuite at the same time...that is what causes the voltage warning errors in AISuite. Delete AISuite, it's not needed :)

Also note, the system looks good mate. The only way you could get cooler CPU temps, would be liquid cooling - say a closed loop system, but from what I remember you dont have the money for it...so rest easy and don't forget, the temps on the CPU are indicated by the ambient temps inside the case and wherever you have the case stored :)

Myk SIlentShadow; First, thank you for being around and the advices.

About the temps, ok. Look; this is what i don't understand. Before of this, i had a Phenom III, with the same case, stock fans(very low rpm and quiet,), same gpu, ddr2 and other mobo. When i played Battlefield 3 with those, i never, but i mean never have a overheat problem or warning. But now that i had the 8150, better cpu solution, better mobo, same gpu, same case, better case fans that took more hot airflow away from the inside. I Can't play it ! Because of those warnings for temperature and voltage. So what the Fu.. !! I don't understand that. It's supposed to be better in fact my cable management is better than before(or the best i could do), So why? Tell me why i had more overheat and warnings for the first time -_- , i have original BF3 and i can't played since April, =/ . I don't live in the Sahara, i had the same ambient temperatures, in fact i have more airflow/space in my room than before, so why in this planet everything is not going as it's supposed to go.

About the HwMonitor, and AI Suite, i start playing a few minutes and i have opened the AISuite only;, but when i began to see those warning i close the game and open the HwMonitor. So.. AiSuite and Hwmonitor had conflict even if its not open? Or the Aisuite is lying to me about those warnings? Why i have to delete it? Tell me..
Or maybe my PSU is not working correctly or had to much thing connected?(if you want a list of the things i have let me know)

About a better cooling solution, Yes. I plan to buy a better one, but now i don't have money; maybe in 6months.
This is what i plan to buy in the coming months:
- Corsair H100i,
- 2 more Rosewill 120mm/2200RPM for the Top,(the ones i have are better than stock but not excellent)
- 1 140mm with better RPM for the front,
- and maybe 2 80mm, to replace all the stock fans i have left in the case.

That's the only thing i could do, in the coming months, the H100i will be the last thing xD i don't have a job now.

chrsplmr Sweet .. No offense to Asus .. but I had to uninstall that long ago for the same reasons ..
Mostly on coming out of sleep mode .. but anytime really . As Myk said .. looks good ...

Thank you, yes i love my computer too, i just want not being worried about the heat/warnings any more )=

Sorry for my bad grammar, and i'm not whining or something, is just that i don't understand this change from Phenom III to Fx-8150. Any clue?

Guys besides my other questions, i have a few more.
I'm not a computer Guru, and i don't want to do Overclocking, just want to stay at default always, but.. I noticed something that intrigued me, look this captures(are in spanish), look the
http://imageshack.us/a/img826/8951/overdrive02.th.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/826/overdrive02.png/)
http://imageshack.us/a/img705/5470/overdrive01.th.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/705/overdrive01.png/)
Why the CPU Is running at: Frequency 3913, and not 3600?????
Does that mean that it's overclocked? If that it, that will explain why is so freaking hot, i don't want to overclock, just stay at default; i check AMD page for comparison, and 8150, runs at frequency 3.6/4.2 GHz, there's a way to put the default 3.6 and stay with that in windows?
Thanks,

Update: looking around in amd forums, i notice some guy mention how to solved overheat problems with the 8150, and well it's simple. TURBO CORE!!!! . Believe me i don't know how the heck the turbo core changed to auto!! I didn't do anything, damn! This is why i'm getting all this hot from the cpu! You see i wasn't lying, it was really odd all the heat.

So I fixed that in the uefi, and it seems better right now, not excellent but at least now i can try playing BF3 to test it. But now i have another question, i noticed a lot of values in the Uefi were in "Auto" , it would be wise to look at the mobo manual and changed all those values to standard green manually?
