How to use the ASUS Republic of Gamers USB BIOS flash back

The minimum hardware requirements for USB BIOS flash back is to have a Motherboard with ATX Power Supply on and plugged into the wall. You do not need to have a CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, or Hard Drive connected to the system.
The system does not need to be turned on or pass POST (Power On Self Test)

1. Acquire a USB Thumb Drive
2. Format the USB drive with a FAT32 file system
3. Download the latest BIOS (http://support.asus.com/download/options.aspx?SLanguage=en&type=1) for your motherboard and place the extracted ROM file on the USB drive
4. Be sure to rename your file according to the motherboard model. If you have an Rampage III extreme, rename the file to R3E. If you have a Maximus IV Extreme rename the file to M4E.
5. Place the USB drive into the ROG Connect USB Port
1860

5. Hold the Rog connect button down for 5 seconds and an amber light near the BIOS chips will flash for several seconds and when flashing has stopped the BIOS has been successfully updated..

Did you mean to say" If you have a Maximus IV Extreme rename the file to M4E" insted of R4E or dosent it matter?

Yeah,

Is It As Simple As.. Switching The MB ROG Switch To On With USB Flash Drive In The ROG Connect USB Port...??
There Is No ROG Button On The C5F MB...

Can You Still Flash The Crosshair V Formula BIOS For AMD FX-8150, With Power Off..??

I Can't Even Enter BIOS Page [No Vid Signal]... DIMM Q LED Flashing When Go Button Pressed...

Cheers Guys..

I am in the same situation with the C5F motherboard with the fx 8150. I have tried flashing this way but with holding in the other buttons on the MB to no avail.

Fishbeast it only flashes back or reverts to an older BIOS. Will not flash a new BIOS this way.

If I have misunderstood your post please correct me so I can try and help you. :)

So part of the problem with this information is what exaclty is the file name for each board? It seems like alot of 8150 buyers need to update the crosshair V to make the 8150 work. So I think we would need the file names that the bios flash utility is looking for before a flash would work.

I have already returned one crosshair V and getting another tuesday! I hope its flashed already as the one I bought from amazon must not have been so I ordered from Newegg.

Hi there, this is my first post, i have the same problem as some of you.

Looking arround everywhere this was the closest solution, but after trying several options, nothing...

Is there a way to update the bios like the Mobos that have the ROG Connect Button? but whit the Crosshair V Formula Switch?
And if that, what is the name of the ROM file, CH5, C5F, CHV, etc??

My system is:
Crisshair V Formula
AMD FX 8150
32 Gbs Corsair Dominator (4x8)
EVGA 560Ti SC

Hi there Splmann, I found that the correct filename is "C5F.ROM". But still nothing... I can't get to POST or enter BIOS, nothing...
tell me if you have any success.

Im thinking on buying another CPU, i found someother forum that with a supported CPU (someone on the supported list with BIOS 0506).

Good luck

Removed my post which was as I didnt realise how to update the BIOS. In case anyone else wanted to know, all I had to do was load the flash drive through the BIOS itself. I was trying to boot the P.C from the flash drive - thinking that it would update that way.

I've never had to update BIOS before. I'm now happily running with the 1102 :D

Hi ROG community,

What is the file name my Maximus IV Extreme-Z mobo will be looking for? Is it M4EZ.ROM or M4E.ROM?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Kittendoggie

Looks like the file you would need to change the BIOS update to is M4EZ.ROM.

Hahaha!!!

I learnt about this the other day after someone tripped over the powercord whilst the RIVE was flashing the BIOS in windows.... After a trying to repowerup I was greeted with this message:

http://img.skitch.com/20120229-t5p845au6t42seuh74pyhbik6y.jpg

Turns out, I managed to fruit off both BIOS chips in my shiny new mobo, though it didn't become a complete lemon!! Reviving the motherboard took less than five minutes!! Awesome! :)

Hello Kittendoggie

Thanks bro. Does the USB stick have to be only formatted to fat32? Or it has to be empy too and containing only the bios file? Will the mobo be able to find it if the USB stick has more stuff on it and the bios file is on the root directory?

MarshallR@ASUS

You should format it in FAT32 empty, but it should work if the file is just in the root directory.

How do I have to name the file for Maximus IV Gene-Z/Gen3??

Also curious about Adrian07ch's post.

What do you rename the file if you're using a Gene-Z/Gen3?

Also, does this utility work to downgrade to an earlier BIOS?

Ceadderman
03-26-2012, 05:51 PM
I'm assuming you cannot flash backward to a previous BIOS once you've installed the latest BIOS? Or am I not getting the full gist of the idea?

I do understand the operation, just the meat of the operation is what has me a little confused.

I've owned my Crosshair IV Formula pretty much since it launched and haven't had any issues regarding BIOS, but say I do. Can I revert or no?

HI, does this work to flashback Maximus Gene-Z (original NOT gen 3) and if so would I rename the file "M4GZ.rom" ?
I upgraded to the latest Bios version 3203 but due too issues I would like to go back to version 902.
If this is not possible can we have some info on when we can expect an updated version to fix the voltage, debug A0 issues from 3203. Thx!

Just to give the original poster a heads up... the instructions on renaming the ROM are wrong. If the board is a maximus IV Extreme then the file name is "M4E.ROM" and not what it is on the OP.

Thank you so much for this post though! I used a little common sense for the filename and it fixed my problem :D

Hi,

Board: Maximus IV Extreme-Z

Can anyone please confirm if this method with the ROG button and the fat32 USB stick is ONLY for a downgrade to an earlier version of the BIOS than that currently in the board (eg 1004 back to 0902)?

Or, can it be used to upgrade a BIOS to a more recent version than that currently in the board (eg 0902 up to 1002)?

There seems to be some confusion about this and it would be useful to have a definitive answer?

That guide in the link is specific for updating to 3xxx series BIOS. The BIOS versions before 3xxx are "non Ivy" and some of them are not a "two stage flash" and are only a "one stage flash".

Does anyone actually know for sure if ROG Connect with fat32 is ONLY for downgrade to earlier version or if it can be used to upgrade to newer versions.

Sure I know there are other methods to flash the BIOS but I would just like to know the scope of the ROG Connect option.

HiVizMan
05-19-2012, 04:58 PM
You can use the ROG connect to flash your bios no problems at all. Doing so is flashing your BIOS via DOS and that is the ideal way of doing a BIOS flash.

And yes I am aware the guide was written for 3 series BIOS the process is however the exact same for any bios flash. Save that there will not be a management engine update. But the things the user needs to do remain the same. :)

To flash in BIOS (Using the EZflash2 utility or via ROG connect) requires a FAT32 formatted USB stick drive.

Thx for the help, I actually updated the BIOS to 0902 using the EZ Flash 2 process and a fat32 formatted USB stick. It is in fact a two step process, the 1st step in the flash of the BIOS with the indicator bar, the 2nd step is after the PC restarts when it updates something known as iROG. I left the USB stick in until everything had totally finished.

Once again, thx for bearing with me and helping.

Okay this is the one way, but what about when I put it right and do not want to upgrade! I'm pressed the button for 10 seconds and it starts blinking and then stops. The version of bios has to be the original manufacture or the latest! you guys could explain in more detail! it did not work!

Thank you!

Can you USB Flash a Crosshair V formula without going into the E-flash option??? Reason I ask is that the Crosshair V doesn't have the button on the outside to hold down to load the new BIOS update..... As I am having the problem of the FX-8150 isn't working with my MOBO needs a update.

Hello I have just bought a Maximus IV Gene-Z second hand and AFAIK it has an older Bios version. I am going to be installing an Ivy Bridge i5 on the board so I need the latest bios version. Like others have mentioned can I UPGRADE the bios with ROG Connect without a CPU/GPU/Ram installed or do I need to install a Sandy bridge processor then do the update then install the Ivy Bridge? Thanks

Hi everyone!

I was recomended to pay a visit to this forum because the source said that people might have more knowledge about my problem.

My problem:

I have a Crosshair v formula-z motherboard and I was stupid enough to try and update the bios on it, i followed the previous mentioned guidehttp://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/. And installed the new bios. The led blinked as it should but when it was done
and I thought I was good to go the computer didnt boot.

So now when i press the start button on the computer it wont boot into bios or anything.

What Ive tried so far:

The bios update itself from usb with the latest drivers and older drivers.
Tried to start computer with usb in another usb port, not the designated white one.
Ive taken out all parts except the cpu and tried flashing new bios from usb.
Taking out the bios battery and putting in in again after a couple of minutes.
Pressed the cmos button.
Tried to update the bios by following the manual that came with the Mother board.
Cried.

And that's about it, if anyone could give me some word of advice I'd be grateful.

Thanks
