Its Saturday and I am bored at work. Hows the rest of my folders today? Anyone moving up, bring new hardware online, anything today? Anyone know if WU 6701 gives bonus points?

Also had a thought. I have a brand new GA-H55N MOBO that I won and have no use for. Anyone want to trade for a NVidia card?

I believe P6701 is A3 WU, with get bonus with a valid passkey.
Where did you win that from?

According to windwithme, a pretty well known reviewer this board OC like crazy. I think he took a I3 340 near the 5Ghz with it. Some new hardware OTW here to. 2 X 2tb samsung. at 79.99 at newegg that's a steal :) But only 1 is mine. I also have a Corsair 600T that is coming to replace my ATCS which will be used for my DATA server :) Lot of moving in the next week XD

I'm still shopping for 1366 board. I have a new i7 960 sitting on my shelf waiting to churn some bigadv.
I got some new fans in the mail Panaflow 120mm x 38mm NMB-MAT FB12G12U. Doing a little comparison with my Denki 1011's.

Some store here in canada are already selling the 1155 stuff. Some people do get them and showed impressive result on OC. with the stock cooler. I mean, 4.5 on stock cooler is prety impressive no XD Just waiting to see some more PPD result from other people to see what these chip can do. But I'm hopping a bit over 50K near 5Ghz which would be a 980X killer..you can build 2 system for the price of only 1 CPU and get more PPD XD

To consolidate some of my folding rigs, I was planning on building a SR-2 folder. However, two i7 2600k systems would be just as effective and cheaper.

A decent system with your 460 would run with a 500W no problem... You can have some 650W seasonic for like 120$ which are far the best PSU on market.
@ dvast8n, SR-2 for folding is not a good idea, many people report issue of the board dying under cnotinous full load. One of our staff at HWC bought one for folding and he is actually selling it after 3 RMA in less than 2 month. Very no reliable.

I bought i7 2600k and Asus P67 Pro tonight. Going to do Sandy Bridge bigadv folder. I may part out my other i7 bigadv folders to purchase a 2nd SB bigadv setup. SR-2 build (reliable or not) is just not economical at the moment for me.

Lucky you! I am gonna get the new P67 Sabertooth as soon as I can find one for sale. (Brian?) I relly like the cooling channels on that mobo. Yea that GA-H55N mobo I have they clocked some really high OC's with out power problems which is suprising on that small of a mobo. BTW I have always used Corsir for PSU. Hey guys, last night power all on my street went out, so yea Idk if im bugging out or what, I left comp on last night after I restarted it did some things then went to bed, I awake to find out I cant wake my monitor up everythigns on but my monitor isnt waking up and nothing is responsive on keyboard ect. like I cant hit capslock and the light go on for it so it was the comp as well. So I just restarted it waited a bit then booted it back up temps seemed fine ect. When I go to start up my F@H client, something in my comp I think related to my graphics card is making a high frequency noise. Such as it going eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Lol. Its loud enough for me to notice it, Idk if it was there before or not, because I get used to sounds, but since me bugging out im seeing if somethings wrong and just heard it so yea... Anyone know if something can be ****ed up on my card? :-\ I hope not. This is what I mean by I have the most crap luck... but yea, Is there any programs to let me know if my card somewhere somehow got ****ed up like a gpu tester to see if something went bad? Thankyou.
Just would like a program that will let me know if anything bad happened to my card :-\ Cant find anything on google that matches what I need...

It's honestly not worth it. I've seen numerous reviews of Gigabyte's previous P55 and X58 UD7 boards and the 939248985943890328459023845983247582345 phase power was good for like 10-20mhz more CPU speed under extreme cooling (in the 6ghz+ range), compared to the UD3 and UD4 offerings. It's more of a gimmick than anything else. More phases does not automatically mean better.
For me it'd come down to price. Gigabyte and ASUS make the best motherboads simply because they have the best BIOS's. You can't go wrong with either choice.

Just seems like everything GA does ASUS copys. Thats why I have always had GA motherboards got 6 of them actually. Have not a problem with a single one. However I know ASUS has been pushing to be at the top of the game and trying hard. Seems to be the choice of a lot of OC'ers also. The 2 video cards and monitor I have from ASUS are also excellent. Plus GA has the sniper series coming out. I just dont know what to do. I have a PSU, Case, Vid card, SSD, everything waiting for me to just get a mobo and i cant choose. ARGH!

I have used corsair and silverstone before and they did not reach enough back when I built. Maybe they have changed Im saying that back then they werent. Dont got to make me sound like I dont know exactly what im talking about... Im going from what I encountered in the past.

Corsair are using the same cable lenght on the TX series for like the past 4 years which is about the same time the 900 came out. If they can actually fit in larger case they were able to fit few years back. Same for silverstone since they use the same CWT design. Some silverstone use a flowerpower design that have cable that are about 1 CM longer and the high end corsair use the Seasonic M12 design which is the reference for a long time and that use some of the longest cable on the market. I don't know which PSU you did try but I was building computer when the case came out and seriously, every ATX standard PSU would fit since the case have ATX internal dimension.

Speaking of can't afford this and that. Shop around a bit on forums. The H50 I listed above is a prime example. You can pick lightly used items or outdated tech for less. This week you should be able to pick up i7 chips for a decent price. I know I'll be selling mine to offset the cost of going SB. Take advantage of sales. The Seasonic X750 is a prime example. Right now it's $130 shipped, I may pick 1 or 2 up just to have them on my shelf for future builds. Because they typically sell for this price used on forums.

Bigadv folders I typically install 8GB. There are not many 2133 choices at the moment. Newegg Choices (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007611%20600006142&IsNodeId=1&name=DDR3%202133%20(PC3%2017000))
Cases will be your own personal preferences. Almost any case can be modified to flow air with a few mods. It all depends on what features you want. Fan filters, removable mobo tray, wire management, GPU fitment etc. I have a couple of these...Lancool/Lian Li K62-R1 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112268)

bigadv no longer requires a large amount of memory like it used to. Basically just get the fastest speed in increments that will max your channels (dual or trip depending on CPU). More memory won't make a difference. I have a rig with 12GB of memory and less than 2GB is used for bigadv folding only.

Would u use triple channel or dual channel for the stuff he linked me if I want to OC with the asus pro mobo? On the mobo for supported mem it says only dual channel not triple so Idk, Ive never really worried bout ram.

For the case, just look at the black version:P

You best bet in term of quality case are these brand :
Lian-li
Lancool
Coolermaster
Corsair
Silverstone
Fractal design ( pretty rare in the US )
Those are far the best build quality you can find on market. And some of the high end one ( lian-li and corsair ) can be sometime found for cheap.

X58 is out for 2 years dude XD but the new P67 are faster since they use newer technology. So head for the P67 and don't look back ;)
For the side panel fan. BAD IDEA! The main idea of case cooling is the airflow. To be effective, air have to follow a turbulence free path. A side panel fan just push all the air on the back of the case, killing this airflow and reducing the cooling around the CPU. That's why most efficient case have 1 or 2 intake fan on front and 1 to 3 exhaust fan on top and rear. You will see what I mean by looking at most of the high end case, most of them have NO side fan. And cheap company does it most of the time because it's a good way to catch people thinking that the more fan there is, the better it is ;) Don't get caught by that my friend.

Ermm I think its misleading to people without front case fan flow the antec 900 side fan reduces my cpu temp to 32 celcius pretty much while gaming, without it its 37. On top of that air hitting ur mobo and gpu's constantly help as seeing bottom mounted psu's produce heat onto ur gpu's. And when I dont have my side fan on as well my mobo jumps up as well 2-6 degrees so I think sidefans are a person thought since it increases mine. and when u have intake from frontpanel fans in front of the case, ur reworking the airflow to be normal again agaisnt to make sidefan blowing west to east agaisnt a south to north reworking it to go out the back of ur case from it being sucked out since their clashing airflows. On top of that u also got the top fan as well wich most cases have now n days to help distribute the clash between the flows of air as well.
In general having a side fan works better for me then not having one Maybe not for others or maybe you still think that it doesnt help wont know till u try, and even if its small it still helps. Try turning on ferenhieght for ur degrees and see what a sidefan does for ur gpu and cpu and mobo, u may see it helps it a bit or may not.
Btw I did state I was seeing my changes in celcius. I use my sidefan on 1 wich is usually a 2-3c change max is about a max of 5c sometimes 6c but I dont need that much change as my system seems quite cool as it is.
Other topic, I didnt know if they were making a x58 1155 socket thats what I wanted to know. Not familliar much with new brand stuff. So all the new mobo's are only dual channel compat and not triple channel for the ram?
Btw no rudeness here just stating my opinion on what has happened for me what I have expirienced and found out myself, maybe im wrong or right who knows but if u can go on about how a side fan is not good or neccessary please do cause it does atleast help my gpu mobo and cpu a bit to notice it. thanks in advanced this is a good topic imo.

The important thing is that most cases are designed with a specific airflow in mind. It's best to test any changes to see if they make a real improvement. If they do then that's the only thing that matters.

i have still yet to see how its bs, I have currently my front case fans disabled when doing these tests, and I have seen the numbers. I have also used my front case fans and seen the numbers as well. I currently have disabled my front fans so I dont have to wipe dog hair off of it every day and only reason why or else I would continue using my front fans as well. As I said It may be different cause the case I use but the antec 900 i see all fans used and not used numbers and all fans enabled gives me great results for all types of cooling and the side fan does cool more then without it. and even more if I do use front fans for pushing 2 seperate air flows onto one spot and directed right out the back. so review sites are wrong as well as right. everyone has different results imo for people running on air and have a sidefan optional I recommend to use but if not dont worry about it cause it may not be big enough for u to care but sometimes its enough to help. Results are results and its different for everyone, mine happens to be very positive for my rig setup.

It's pretty simple Martin, if everything else is equal does turning the side fan on lower your temps in a specific scenario(NOT someone else's lab tests)? If not then don't bother but if it helps then screw the lab tests. I'm not sure why you keep pushing at him since what he's got is working for him. Might there be another way to achieve the same or better temps? Sure, but if it works well enough to keep your system stable and long lived why does it matter?

thankyou, I just dont see how I can magically have better temps but labtest say it doesnt do jacksquat. I have proof right here in front of me daily, Maybe ur right maybe wrong who knows but it works for me and thats all i know. Still just stating im not being rude, just putting a argument out for us to have seeing this is just for chatter. =)

Cody you know I got the 900 case same as yours. What I found to be the best was this.. trust me i did a lot of testing.. I put my HD & SSD in the lower cage with the fan on low setting. Left the upper cage empty and put the switch on high. Added a fan to the plexy side(has a nice holder!) that didnt have a switch so high I guess. the back fan on the med setting and the top on high. That was just my two cents. (Also I used a Zalman 9300 CPU cooler blowing to the back.)
BTW you really should look into grabbing some a/c filter materal or black breathable foam and put it in front of you front HD cages. Really cuts the dust down. I will get a pic if you need me to show you how. Just gotta get the Antec out of storage.

Yea I think I have mine free on bot and hd's on top and yeap the holder is absolutely amazing I have it on low with back on high as well as top, with front two disabled cause Been messing around. It does give results the side fan for u as well doesnt it? also i hate adding non comp parts to my cases its the fact the front of my case as well as side wich are my intakes the dog I have sheds all year long so her hair gets stuck to the case intakes its annoying so i just disabled the front for that reason as well XD but yea no need to grab the case out of storage unless it has parts in it going on ebay =P

you mean i7 2600k? =P I only got 500$ to my name for everthing I wish I can somehow earn 600$ more to get my rig build :( Also did u get the 8gb of gskillz or 4gb? If 4gb where did u get it from casue newegg is out also not really big on ram info especially for ocing but whats better 9-10-9-30 or 9-10-9-28 or 9-11-9-28 cause gskillz is 9-11-9-28 for 8gb 2x4gb has it or gskillz 2x 2gb is 9-10-9-28 or ocz reaper 9-10-9-30? Dont know crap about ram tbh. But yea My build setup I wanna get mainly these it seems.
Coolermaster HAF 932 Case
Intel 2600k
Asus Pro mobo
Corsair h70 (or is h50 better for the case fitting?)
CM 850Watt Single rail http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171048 (Unless you know a far better one I know now single rails are better for OC'ing and what better to use same brand as case to fit well regardless)
For my ram, you decide I have no clue anymore whats up with ram sept I know I need dual channel and cant use triple channel from explainations from you guys so thanks. I just dont know crap about OCing and when someone helps turn this badboy up when i get it eventually sometime hopefully :-\ ill have all the right stuff. I think your build looks good. I chose the G.Skill cause I have about 11 pairs of thier memory and they all still work. Plus lifetime warrantee. I would look into the HAF X case if I was you. It's just so much better IMO. For the ram I would get something that specifiys Sandy Bridge. Excelent choice on the H70 I have one. I would however recomend upgrading the fans on it.
I like the single rail powersupplies also. I always go with Corsair though. I went with 8GB by the way. Also only dual channel triple is not supported.

So i looked at the Haf X It looks neat, but... some major problems with what I got. First, I dont understand the PSU cable mount thing. It gives not enough room to even put the psu in unless it can move back n forth but still looks very weird and misleading. Second is can I put 140mm fans on the Corsair H70 since the back is a 140mm fan on the haf X and doesnt seem I can put 140mm fans on the H70 Also Yea Im not positive on PSU yet just went with a recommended one with the build.

Look at the pic I posted a while back. I have the HAF X . With a h70 mounted on the back with a kaze fan its 120. Cable managment is awesome. They give you a cover to hide where your wires come out of the PSU (it comes off and you can mount it in several positions front to back). Also the big plus if they have a fan and shroud that channels air directly to the vid cards. Trust me the case is a master piece!

I'm a little late into this.. (previously talking about cooling in here) but I have an Antec Three Hundred and have all the stock case fans (rear + top) set to Med and a stock cooler on my AMD 1055t(2.8GHz stock) OC to 3.2GHz (+400Mhz.. not alot but helps!) and I've never seen it go above 50c... I can SMP fold all 6 cores @ 100% and watch Netflix and stream my cameras to the desktop with absolutely no problems. Even if I'm running or installing programs its still LOADS faster any computer I have to do service on (mostly complete crap) and is comparable to a dual/triple core with good clock speeds... I fold on it 24/7 so to me it just automatically puts those resources to use and I can have the leftovers... But its not my main USE computer, I have a 1.46GHz Celeron M/2GB@333/Win XP Acer TravelMate laptop that honestly is the main internet/email/general crap computer I have ( My 4thGen iPod can do pretty much everything it can.. Its becoming a paper weight fast) And I have a Gateway FX series laptop C2D t5550@1.8Ghz (t9300@2.5GHz soon if I can find one around or under $75) / 4GB ram@667 / nVidia 8800m GTS (about 2500ppd @stock settings.. if you were gonna ask :p ) that generally satisfies my gaming needs if the 360/Kinect don't. I forgot exactly where I was going because I got sidetracked and came back to this page but I think basically what I'm saying is you don't need the newest and the best but just look at what you do and what you use it for and try to get something (realistically) that matches up with what your going to do.. If you can afford to go overboard on anything then go for it (contests help too!) but IMO if you start waiting for technology then that's all you end up doing.
...Slightly @Cody but for everyone to enjoy

Well I do video editing, as well as extreme gaming and other things. I need top end system lately cause its taking me days to do things that will take 4-8 hrs. On top of that, I am just not the type of person to go low end, I need it to last 3 years a rig wich sounds long but it really isnt for how long I am up and constantly having to keep the computer on 24/7 due to it. I wish I could go cheap but I just simply cant, When I built this rig it costed well around 1500$ compared to now 1200$ is cheaper and well more worth it. I just simply cant afford it what so ever yet due to my health insurance is also now trying to make me pay 1200$ alone for the ambulance ride to the hospital when I should only have to pay 50$ according to my health insurance. Just got the bill in yesterday so thats another set back as well.

Just have a general question if anyone can answer. I currently have a GTX570. Would it be better to get another GTX570 and SLI or Buy a GTX580 and use it for display and the gtx570 for phsyx only? Any help would be appreciated.
xeromist
01-28-2011, 11:35 PM
I think relegating a 570 to physx only at this point would be a real waste. Not to mention that in games where there is no physx support you will have one card doing entirely nothing. 2x 570 would give you a lot more flexibility. You could either run SLI or dedicated Physx now and when a substantially better card is available just sell one of the 570's and use the other for physx once it's no longer good enough for rendering.
But hey, if you want a physx only card I'll trade you a 470 for that 570 AND I'll even pay the shipping! How's THAT for a deal?! You won't even know the difference. ;)
martin_metal_88
01-29-2011, 04:42 AM
Even if I am not a big sli or CFX fan I agree with Xero. Also, note that the list of game that actually have real physx support is growing slow. most of the game only have a kind of a support but it's not up to what Nvidia want it to be. If you want physx just get a cheap 80$ GT240 or thnig like that. So, Sli is my vote.

havn't been folding for a little, but the new client is ok. What i do like is that it gives details for each WU about what is being researched.
When I get my CUII I will let you know what kind of points it gets.. Direct CU is nice for overclocking.... I have a direct CU ASUS 5770 and it runs 1000/1300 with no heat issues.

Well I just got my new 570 installed and I'm very impressed with the cooling of the Direct CU II. For now I'm running everything at stock until I can get some more power cause right now im pushing it on my AX750. I have a hx850 that I need to send back to corsair ( hopefully they replace it ) but if not I will be looking for a new psu so I can crank up my i7 and fold some bigadv.

Hope you guys get your new hardware soon!

Nice tempertures, and I recall you running SMP on your PhenomII?

Yeah I was running bigadv on it but its not folding currently because I just reformatted, and havn't set up the VMWare yet

Just for kicks guys just cause I'm not sure
can any one guess what the PPD would be on my on my
EVGA 4 way SLI with
980X at 4.5 Ghz and
4x GTX 570s at 825 Core 4000 memory ?
any one ?
any one ?

I woud guess:
CPU running Bigadv roughly >50,000ppd
GPU roughly >15,000ppd

Don't you have to run big adv on CPU?
can it be run on GPU?

bigadv is CPU only because GPU's can't do that kind of work.

how do the work loads vary then?

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean why some work units take longer than others on the same hardware? That is because they are different simulations. Each work unit with the same project number has a similar amount of work that is required so all units in that project have the same point value. Different projects are used for researching different things so the amount of work can vary quite a bit. Stanford tries to make the point value scale with the amount of work so our PPD is relatively stable compared to every unit having the same value. bigadv is another class of unit that is substantially larger than all others. It is designed for powerful multicore servers having at least 8 cores. High end desktop machines squeak by with virtual cores and high clocks.

by workload i mean GPU is done by parallel processing vs linear processing with a CPU.
so why does the CPU need to do the big adv? is the workload designed for on for CPU I'm just trying to figure out why big Adv could not done on GPU

Ah, I see. My understanding of this is not complete but I think the gist is that the programming interface for GPU's is an abstraction (ie CUDA) so they cannot do everything that an actual CPU can do. It's possible that I'm mistaken and that the limitation is actually a hardware shortcoming but the end result is the same either way. They do certain types of work extremely well though which is why GPU folding has historically had higher point values. It's only relatively recently that CPU has taken that crown back due to advances in CPU tech and the need for bigadv work.
