Hi, I'm Gorman, computer science student / .NET developer. I bought a G53JW last year because they looked pretty good after spending many sleepless nights researching and chatting on /g/, however I shook off /g/'s warnings about ASUS build quality and support...
Maybe I shouldn't have :P

Oh well, live and learn, once ASUS stop trying to weasel their way out of their warranty hopefully I can get something else, probably a Clevo.

EDIT: Err, I seemed a bit like a **** there, I do think the G53JW is a great machine when it works, but if you have to take 2 weeks out of every 3 months for repairs then it really adds up huh. I don''t really want another computer with such cheeky support staff.

hi, Reverb here!

New to the whole Asus thing, just got a G74sw-bbk7.
I've been looking around the forums so far and wondering about any guides on how I should set up my new laptop (covering stuff like not installing the live update thing and more). Let me know if such a forum/thread exists.

Anyway, game on!

Hello,

I'm Equinoux and I'm a new Republic of Gamers member. Allow me to introduce myself; I'm 30 years old and have been gaming nearly all of my life. I have been building my own computers since an early age and have never really owned a gaming laptop. Lugging around my tower to LANs was always a pain in the butt, especially the morning after when it was time to go home. So, I finally pulled the trigger after a month of research and after I spotted one hell of a deal on Amazon.

One thing that I noticed after I purchased my G53SW-XA1 from Amazon's Warehouse Deals earlier this month was that it refused to power on. After checking online, I found out about the magnet issue and managed to correct it (thank you Sedozai). Once it powered on, I realized that the laptop still had the previous owner's "very personal" information on it. However, I'm a nice guy and ended up formatting everything so I can start with a fresh install. After getting everything up and running and eventually upgrading to a dual SSD setup, I have to say that I'm loving every little bit of my Asus G53 and I'm looking forward to being a part of the RoG community.

I will be tweaking my new rig so I may ask some questions here and look forward to everyone's replies.

No worries about English @saimon, there are plenty of non-native English speakers on the forums, since we are global brotherhood of ROG. Keep in mind, though, that USB 3, is a problem on every manufacturer, unless you have one of the new Ivy Bridge systems, which have USB 3.0 built into the chipset. Older systems (ASUS, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) use a pci-e card (kinda) to obtain USB 3.0 functionality, which has caused no end of headaches. Chalk it up to a combination of drivers and hardware. You were right for buying the ASUS, an HP is a piece of junk. Hewlett and Packard would turn over in their graves if they knew that the engineering company for engineers was making the stuff that HP makes today . Back in their day, HP made quality hardware, and was known for its engineering equipment--and especially for its calculators.

I understand that feeling about not having the latest and greatest, our euphoria only lasts about 1-2 months, if that long. If USB 3.0 is a big priority for you, try to trade in on the new N-series/G-series, which, from what I understand of the hardware, have no problems with USB 3.0. Anyone with a G55 willing to chime in on this?

Hello overclockers, my name is Kyle. I'm a graphic designer and also an avid gamer. Though, my broken left hand has limited me to all work and no gaming lately. :p

You can find me on Overclock.net, my username is Arrant there. I love case modding and the overall process of rig building and customization. Overclocking is also a fun part of building for me, I'm a problem solver and overclocking gets my technical rocks off! I'm sure some of you know what I mean. ;)

I'm dialing in my Maximus V Gene and 3770K, so I need to start going through some threads. I look forward learning and perhaps helping as well on here, cheers!

The first step is to admit that you have a problem.
My name is Jonathan and I am an addict (pc's). Been doin pc's for about 10 years and still going strong. Just bought my first ROG motherboard last week and lovin it so far. Crosshair V Thunderbolt, Fx-8150, 16 gig g-skill ripjaws x, asus hd6950 dcII graphics running triple 26" asus monitors, 120 gig ssd drive (soon to be Ocz revodrive 240), Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse, Logitech g35 headset and logitech g27 racing wheel (for my iracing needs). I usually don't overclock but will tinker around with it sometimes and get nervous and revert back to original.
I also have an Alienware m17x R2 with dual graphics for when I'm out of town.

Very new to the ROG world.

I'm always on the go and an avid gamer which is why the G55VW was a suitable choice.

Hope to hear from you guys soon.

My only qualm is only the GTX 660m drivers :(
Any timeframe for release? 301.42 Verde has been officially released by nVidia but no sign of GTX 660m.

Anybody installed the modified INF version 301.40 with driver version 301.42?
A little confused here.

Does it support other Kepler cards, if so, then the 660M is supported. Just install it and find out, the worst that happens is the installer refuses to run. That's not such a bad proposition.

Hello. I'm a hardcore competitive gamer, that is addicted to researching the latest progress in gaming hardware (PCUs, GPUs, motherboards, etc.). My name is Vincent, computer handle Enthusiast. My areas of interest are various and diverse. I have been building my own computers for a few years and even dabbled in overclocking once or twice. I am hoping to rekindle that with my latest creation, based on the ASUS Rampage III Extreme. There are so many aspects of this build that I am unsure that I have gotten all the details correct, so I will be searching the forums and asking questions so that I may best set this system up. Being able to control overclocking with an attached laptop and/or iPhone is a feature I am looking forward to investigating.

I hope to learn much from you guys and maybe provide a bit of help myself from time to time.

Currently running an older Asus PT6 with I7 920 at 3.8G with a gtx570 in a Haf 22 case, it does the job
Built my son an I5 2500k on an Asus P8z68 mainboard a month ago, damn thing flys at 4.5gig (Runs too hot for me at 5G but stable).

Just bought my first laptop last week never thought I'd need to own one, an Asus G75vw (gt670m version), very impressed with it so far.

Hi all, Julian here. Started off with a G2S-A1 and later a 1000HE eeePC when I figured the the g2s was a tad too heavy to bring on vacation ;). Sadly the G2S has since suffered a (suspected) burnt out GPU after almost four years of service :(

I have yet to take the plunge to give the system a tear down and try to reflow the gpu. In the meantime I have now acquired the G74SX-XC1 while it was on clearance just before Christmas :)
After months of procastination, I am finally in the process of installing a SSD and doing a clean install of Win7...just a few more drivers I'm looking for :)

Whats up with this new laptop? My Asus G75VW running Win764 with AVG antivirus is spontaneous rebooting, lost its boot sector somehow and required restore. My name is DJ, and I am a anxious soon to be ROG'er. I was insanely impressed by a friend of mines G73 that by Saturday I purchased a refurbished G74SX-XC1 on Amazon. I have been reading up here for about a week and I must say that I am glad to be joining a group of such helpful individuals.

Welcome matey! Just start reading around in the Older ROG Notebooks Section, and jump in if you feel confidant! Sort of like bridge--help big when yer knowing big ;)

Hey everyone!

I'm Raziel, new around here! I love Asus products but I just got my first ROG product, an amazing G55VW-IX099V machine, a desktop replacement of sorts because I'm going to university abroad. I'm into gaming and overclocking, and I'm sure the G55VW won't disappoint - currently just using it from time to time to see how it runs before buying another HDD and replacing the optical drive for it.

Got the right attitude matey! ROG is a band of brothers...and sisters too! :) Mostly guys, yes, but there are few gals around here...be nice, some of them bite! :)

Do not underestimate yourself, you will help more people than you know. Sometimes the person who starts a thread or asks a question has more to do with its resolution than all the other guys who leap in to help. Been there, seen it happen. Its a give-and-take relationship. Sometimes you take advice, sometimes you give it. Welcome again!

Hi Im 41 and from Scarborough in the UK, I worked for a Govt. dept. but retired in 2003 (aged 33) due to bi-polar disorder.

I got my first console around 1976 when we were living in Hong Kong (Dad posted there for 3 yr tour) and my first PC in around 1984 - a Commodore Vic-20

Ive been mainly playing XBOX and 360 games over the past few years and I started to get frustrated because few titles appealed to me (I liked Mass Effect 1-3 and Red dead but most games were too linear).

I had a Dell netbook and have been playing an online game called Starport Galactic Empires, I started there in 2006 and won the championships in 2010. Ive gone as far as I can with that game and its very time consuming so I started looking at different strategy games on youtube. I stumbled accross Arma and thought "that looks like my sort of game", I liked the way gamemodding was embraced and it looked very immersive.

I checked the specs required and then bought a copy of pcgamer (cancelled my xbox mag subs - been getting since approx.2002) and a copy of custompc and started doing a lot of research.

Ive worked with computers and comms for many years, but have never built a system from scratch.

Anyway I started this process In May and now I have my new PC, I hope I have as much fun gaming as ive had
building etc.

I been looking at the vids of it and reading about it on bistdudio.com and other sites.

Hi guys,
I am a 47 year old electrician. Born and raised in the bay area but moved to an island in WA. state about 11 years ago.
Been into gaming since pong. I have never gotten into pc gaming but i just got a g73jw as a desktop replacement. I am into building choppers and CB and Ham radios. I definitely like to tinker. I really appreciate the art of customizing a pc into something special. From what i have seen on this forum so far there are some very talented people here.
I can remember a 8 bit tank game that at the time was amazing. Now after playing Crysis 2 i have seen the evolution to gaming. Then I read the article on the Maximus V Mod by Ban Nguyen an see that the level of not only the software but also the hardware is constantly evolving and i think its pretty bad ass....

It is possible that the battery charge-protector is running. The battery will not charge unless the charge falls below 95% to increase the lifespan of the battery. Try cycling the battery (at least partially <75%) and seeing if that helps! Welcome matey!

I love all things PC gaming, have been gaming since i was 5 back when Commodore 64 was the latest in computer tech, I had hundreds of games.
In fact i still have my original C64 machine and it still works if i have the right sort of TV to plug it in to, I also still have most of the original games from back then and still know all the dos commands(i think it ran on a modified version of dos) well at least every thing was done through the keyboard.
I do have a PS3 but only have 6 games, which consists of all the Assassins Creed games(bar AC3) Driver San Fransisco/infamous1&2/prototype1&2. and the Play TV program so I can record TV shows.

If you're going on your personal page (click on your name at the top of the page), on the left side you can find "find all posts" and "find all started threads". To follow threads in which you posted, go to the Settings on the top of the page... Also, you can find detailed infos about Forum Usage here: http://rog.asus.com/forum/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_faq#faq_vb3_board_usage

The ranking system is based upon post counts, meaning that those of us who wag their tongues are the "gurus"...the rep system is more valuable. The little green square under the title is important. However over it, and see what tooltip comes up.

I wouldn't worry much about post counts. You just need to show your head is screwed on straight through participation and people will respect you. I've bumped into people on the internet with thousands of posts who were giving bad advice or acting like jerks so I'd rather judge on quality over quantity. Conversely we have some people here with relatively few posts who are incredibly knowledgeable.

Zygomorphic

I found this forum because I am doing a build on Monday with the MVF z77 board, this will be my 5th build but 1st with this board. I figure if I own the board I may aswell join these forums too lol. Welcome mate pull up a easy chair and join the rest of us. Many of the blokes here will be from the same generation I am guessing based on your starting point.

If you have any questions or stuff you would like expanded on just start a thread mate and one of the good folk here will get back to you ASAP.

Enjoy being part of ROG.

Same era for me, though I had a Vic20.

I remember spending hours typing in games from CandVG magazine.....then went to run the prog....syntax error.

Hello everyone

My name is Jimmy but I got by Nimm or Nimroc when gaming. I just purchased a Asus G75VW from Best Buy after reading some pretty nice reviews on it. So far it runs BF3 really nice. I work in the Oilfield down here in Louisiana so I wanted a machine that would run my FPS Games when I am offshore working. So far looks like I got a nice machine.

Hi Guys
Just want to say hi to you all, this is from an old guy who should be in korduroys and a peek cap :) But I am saverely disabled and enjoying the freedom on my Asus gaming laptop. Still loads to learn but I am an old fan for Tomb Raider having plyes her games on the old win 95. Before that there was the nintendo etc. So i'm not realy new at this. It's just the complexity of these new computers, but with this forman I just know and hope I will be able to find all the answeres. Guyonet

Hi Nim, Guyonet - enjoy your BF3 Nim :D, and dont worry about the peak cap Guy, gamers are gamers whatever the age. Gaming goes back millennia so just enjoy it :D

One of my opponents in Starport was in his 70's and needed to have oxygen 24 * 7, I was always worried about him when we was invading!

@Guyonet, great to see some of the old guard around...a lot of this forum is young people like me. :) Still, some of those old games are unbeatable: Myst, King's Quest, Command Keen, etc. Great games, too bad they aren't being made anymore. :( Adventure games are my favorite. Hello everyone...

At the advice of a good friend of mine, I just purchased an ASUS G75VW.

My purpose is to have a portable Hyper-V environment to run several Windows Servers for testing purposes.
(sorry gamers :-) )

Retired from the U.S. Army and now working for Verizon in Virginia.

I do a lot of boating in my free time.

My experience with ASUS goes WAY BACK to 386/486 Desktop PCs.

My first computer was a TRS-80 and my first real desktop was a Tandy 1000.

Yes, I have saved and loaded my proggies from cassette tape :-)

Gotta love those old comps...so much character...not like today. Those things actually lasted. HPs used to be the gold standard when HP was Hewlett and Packard. Now it is Horrible Products. Those computers were built like tanks...maybe because the Cold War meant that you might have to duck behind the screen to avoid the bullets. :)

I loved my TRS-80 even did my thesis on one of those in 1978. Mine needed the floppy disc so must have been a later version. DOS and wordstar plus storage all on one spindle drive. Brings back memories big time.

When ever a hit the shut down button the laptop starts to shut down then a blue screen comes up and the laptop restarts by itself. This could happen 3 or 4 times and the when I hit the button to shut it down it works. Some days it just shuts down on the first try. Any one else ever have this problem. Thank you for all your help in advance and thank you for letting me join this board.

Hi Everyone,
My name is Tim and I live in Camarillo CA. I have been building computers as a hobbies for over 30 years.
so I finally decided to start my own company. Top-End Computers and Mods, also located in Camarillo CA.
I'm a new company and I am in the process of setting up my web and advertisements. I do PC repair. Howeveer my specialization is in building Mods. I have three units. My mod one is a Rampage Extreme iv M.B. Intel i7 3690x Three E.V.G.A. GTX690 w/4.2 Gb. 4 WD 1TB HDD running a RAID0 w/120GB SSD. Cooling is liquid Twin fan rad, 64Gb RAM Corsair Vengance at 1600 MHz with three surround asus 27" DMI. I have discovered that the tweak for OC is a tiring process to balance all the different settings to have the system perfoHrm with good stability. However, I need to push it to the Max to understand any potential failures or issues inherent with my set up. I am also needing better understanding of these settings. I am hoping that someone can direct me to get as musch info ont this board as possible. As well as my two other Mods as follows.
Crosshair with AMD 2180 CPU, 32 Gb Corsair Vengenance 1600 MHz Ram, Two EVGA 570 sli and 2 WD veloceraptor HDD at 1TB RAID0. MOD lll is a Sabertooth X79 with intel i7 3690k, 32 Gb Corsair Vengance at 1600Mhz. Single EVGA GTX 580.
TWO WD Black Cavair 1TB RAID0. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanx, TD
