View Full Version : Want To Test!

Hey ROG! I may not be anything but a normal guy in the fire alarm business, but I was watching one of your YouTube videos and the guy was answering questions. One of them really caught my attention and that was "Can I be a tester?" I don't know how many ROG workers will read this, but it would be the biggest honor to test your latest products.
Right now I am operating off of a Mac and I hate it. On August 6th I turn 18 and to celebrate I was going to pick up the ROG G74SX and do a video review on it. I had this crazy idea maybe I could get it as a gift from you guys but that would be a little insane right? Anyways, in all seriousness, I would LOVE to test for you guys. Build a tower with a new MB, operate and review a new notebook, anything. PLEASE give me a chance! I promise I wont disappoint!

I can't say. Maybe she's not get'n them panties either, are they real soft...and silky? What other kinda

you know what i will do? give me some time and i'll set something up. "in search of the ROG reviewer." Maybe i'll create a thread and you can tell me why you think you are qualified to test our products. Maybe i'll throw in a Maximus IV Gene-Z board for someone to convince me they have what it takes to review a board. And honestly... do you want to review a board because you want to review it? Or do you just want free hardware...?
Maybe if enough people are interested we can have a community board to go around for people to try out for fun. im not expecting something crazy or serious, but something fun and truthful. it'll be on the honor system. any suggestions?

Brian,
You throw in a cpu and I'll smoke that board from every angle I can think of.
With all the great examples of ROG level reviews right on this forum I can promise
you a worthy piece.
I'd be happier however to pass that to an intel master and wait for Ooooh. I don't
know, maybe a "Crosshair V GENE" and a nice assortment of Bulldozers...ok...one.
Or maybe there is an "Crosshair Dual Dozer V Ultra Extreme" in the future.
(Hey, I just felt all the intel guyz shiver a little.)
With all due respect though, Ive done quite a bit of reading on this forum and there
are an amazing amount of far more qualified members than I, but I'll put juice to
anything with that Silver and Red..and live to tell about it.c.
Brian@ASUS
07-27-2011, 06:21 AM
yea i don't know if i can support additional hardware. Part of being a reviewer is to use your own hardware. if people have different hardware in their review, the outcome should offer a variety of configurations and perspectives on the product.

Fair Enough. Like Dirty Harry once said, '..a man's got to know his limitations', better to
know the 'other guys'. (You didn't really think we wouldn't try to up, at least first offer..hahaa)
Brother, I'd even be thrilled to be offered testing those afore mentioned garments..Best to all.c.
With all do seriousness, I think the beauty of what we find here is all the little bits and pieces
that come from each member's conquered challenges posted, questioned and answered.
Like th W/U drawer of a filing cabinet (worthless and useless information) each single piece
put in has little meaning at the time, but once viewed in total we may still be confused, but
on a higher level, and about more important things. The teamwork of this membership is why
my V is running as sweet as it is today.
All new boards have walls, here is where I have been able to learn to climb over all of them.

Brian@ASUS
07-27-2011, 06:18 PM
I gave this some thought and i will continue to brainstorm, but for this to happen, i think we will need to have the following:
A public sign up sheet that everyone can see. This should show everyone the schedule of when people need to finish their review by.
Maybe a submission thread to introduce yourself, why you want to review the product, what makes you qualified, and what can you contribute to the community.
I think we need to have the reviewers have at least 100 posts minimum to even be considered. Part of it is a trust issue, if we don't know who you are, how will we know if you wont run off with the hardware. It would be great to have the guys that are dedicated to our community to have priority.
We need to set a time frame of how long you can hold onto the hardware before shipping it to the next guy. This is where the schedule comes in.
We cant modify or tweak the physical board. That means no chipset water cooling or LN2. You can still use water for the CPU, but we don't want users to disassemble the heatsinks and have it mess up for other users.
You need to list out what hardware you plan to use for the review. ASUS can not provide additional hardware, it must be your own.
any other ideas?
xeromist
07-27-2011, 07:37 PM
That sounds good so far. It's too bad that there can't be sub-ambient testing, but I agree that the board shouldn't be modified so that really puts that out.
Brian, may want to list any limitation of where a person resides if it is going to affect their eligibility to participate.
Raja@ASUS
07-27-2011, 07:41 PM
I would have a credit card deposit system to cover the cost of the hardware. In my experience working as an editor on one of the biggest sites, people WILL run off with hardware and will also spam with posts to build up a sense of credibility to do it. I know this sounds negative but that's just how things are.

I take peoples interested should make a test, make small review of a product they already own, so we can see if they are good writer, of course that will exclude me , lol anyway the only think I'm looking for, is a ROD t-shirt to wear in my shop .
xeromist
07-27-2011, 08:22 PM
It's just prudent, Raja. Having a CC on file is just a basic deterrent that's pretty standard when dealing with expensive hardware. ASUS already does this with expedited RMA so no harm doing it here as well.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. The main goals of a program like this would be to give people the opportunity to try new hardware and see what it is like to write a review. While being a good English writer is nice, I would take a thorough Quebenglish review over a grammatically perfect but ultimately pointless review. I think the bilingual people actually have an advantage because they can write their reviews in two languages and reach a larger audience.
I think the bigger issue mentioned previously is shipping things in and out of the country. As soon as a package has to go through customs it becomes a real headache.
Area 66
07-27-2011, 08:53 PM
I agree with the CC, I see to many reviewers receiving free stuff for a review, and just sell the stuff after on their forum ( it's a very good source of income for certain of them ) . If someone receives something to review from Asus, it should be return to Asus, in no way it should be something to make profit.
chrsplmr
07-27-2011, 09:55 PM
I haven't seen one thing that I would disagree with..this sounds great.
The passing it from one to the next especially, the cc (just smart today),
no customs, the hardware available for each, resourse available to member/participant,
perfect grammar not the point(a great review is.),,,,adding maybe 75% of the 100 post
requirement before sign up (to cut down on trollers), and the 100 before actual consideration..
peer review (discussion)(big time factor here) from "sign up" members...
and please..can someone get 'MarkedOne' a ROG t-shirt....
(Hey "Marketing"..he wants to wear it in his shop...subliminal marketing
of ROG to his walk ins..free. Well, $20 plus shipping..whatta deal.)
The 100 post thing leaves me out, first round, but maybe by the time Asus is ready to
release that "V Ultra Extreme" or "VI"...I will have gained the required
trust and respect..Resources? aah probably wont be an issue. The remarks from the
interested so far, are some of the best posters I've read...I believe Im seeing the birth
of a very good thing here. All started by a fire alarm salesmen and a guy that said he "just
wanted a T-Shirt"....awesome stuff.c.

For the T-Shirt just send one to the Asus rep who will come in Montreal this fall for the Intel ICC, as the Asus rep are quite small ( aside of JJ ) better not forget it. lol
on topic ( if I'm not ban for treating an Asus rep. lol) I will receive my Crosshair V, Friday or next Monday, I plan to test it with a 1090t ( folding and VM) and in September I will replace the CPU with a 8 cores dozer, so I will be please to give you my small review on the difference between 6 cores and 8 cores, in folding and VM usage, of course I will have a serious look at the cooling and power draw of that board. I’m sure you gone find plenty of reviews on the web about the gaming aspect, but non do VM reviews, and it’s sad because more and more people are using VM in their build, I still have to finish my VM benching technique. I will be using Hyper-V and ESXi* for have the maximum efficiency and also VM Workstation to have the aspect when running over Windows.
* if I can install ESXi on it of course, but I have not find an 890 board that I was not able to do so, I don't need USB, sound and onboard NIC.

So stay tune, as I do only business servicing now, I install more and more servers in VM, far more easy to back-up and to re deploy in case of hardware failure, for learn and practice the stuff I have now 7 Hyper-V hosts and 2 ESXi hosts in my lab all on 1090t six core servers, ( can’t afford Intel 6 cores CPU ) And on my PCs I’m using VMware Workstation. Wait in October when it gone be cold here, all those 6 cores will be add to my folding power when I don’t use them ( 98% of the time )

First off, the reason i want 100 posts to qualify is because i want people that are active within the community, but also know how to use the tools and functions of this site. I still see a lot of people posting links for photos and videos when they can easily embed them on the threads. (photo and film icon). even with 100 posts, i think someone with 700 posts may or may not get seniority.
I think what i am looking for is just honest thoughts of the product. I am not expecting something to be on the level of professional media, but anyone can do a simple unboxing, maybe a youtube unboxing, and their thoughts of the product. Im sure we all play different games here, and im sure we do different things on our systems like video editing, photoshop, web browsing, etc etc. I would like to see real world usages in the review. Maybe we shouldn't even call it a review, its more like a blog.
I also agree that we can reach an larger audience if we have different languages as well. Im sure we can be creative.
Additionally for everyone that reviews the product, I will include a t-shirt as a thank you. And possibly when we are at the end of the product's review cycle we can raffle it off within the pool of reviewers.
any other feedback?

Lot's of great suggestions. I heartily agree with the idea to have a credit card on file, it simply retains accountability for not only returning the product, but returning it in good condition. Being in Canada, I am particularly looking forward to hearing about any regional restrictions, I know shipping across the border can be a pain not only for cost, but time as well. The post limit really makes me wish I had joined the ROG forum earlier, but patience is a virtue! I will get there eventually I am sure. I was hoping to possibly get my hands on a Thunderbolt sometime to do a comparison between it, the CHIVE's onboard Realtek, the Xonar Xense, and the AMD pass-through (Where applicable). Alas, details on that matter would be best reserved for the thread Brian is musing about posting.

Definitely peer review is a great idea, real world application is what you really need to know! There are a lot of review sites that give you a lot of information with charts and numbers and such, but they often miss the most important points. Kind of like a cell phone review that covers every feature except the one where you can make phone calls with it (and if the quality of said call is any good). I usually find myself skipping to the conclusion of whatever tech review I read, then look back on any relevant data I am still curious about. What's more, I think this could even promote the value of this forum as a tool for ROG owners.
Something along the lines of: One of us receives product for review > runs into a problem > seeks support on the forum > fixes problem > states this in the review!
EX: "My first time firing up the new build with the Crosshair V GENE;), I ran into stability issues, so I logged onto the ASUS ROG forums, and posted the details of what was happening. Within minutes, Raja@ASUS was able to help me diagnose that the problem was with my RAM timings, and a few minutes later we set them straight, and I was good to go!"
I am sure there are a lot of people out there who don't realize the value this forum adds for the owner of any ROG product on the market. I mean, most (if not all) manufacturers have a support forum, but the ROG team definitely steps things up several notches with both a persistent presence, and a very knowledgeable down to earth crew. I tire of support forums where they fire off stock responses from a list (basically the internet's version of an ISP support line) once every other weekday.

chrsplmr

Exactly.
A few short months ago, I never had thought of forums. Wise-Crack'n little no-nothing punks. Not Here.
You nailed it with real-world, the people that are using these boards and making them scream..and
love it...who better to point you in the right direction.
Things that took me, sometimes a week to figure out (I only had myself, google and manuals) will not
only be answered..but maybe discussed with several angles to consider.
"The Industries Only Peer Reviewed Boards"--
The other thing I see, is the broad talents and interests of all involved...
With the blog, an open or closed until complete blog, during the testing..the writing and testing,
as it moved from member to member would be on the fly.
(I see an awesome writer among us, not to disrespect anyone, Cyrekk, sweet.)thnx.c.
EDIT::: Yes, I too, right to the Conclusion: and then move on....except game reviews, after
Nuke Dukem...there is a reviewed industry that needs to be reviewed. In fact, that is a perfect
example..all the "reviews" (marketing) before release, the release, then the real review from
the "real world"-(u know the ones that shelled out 60 bucks and have spent tons of time
and cash to "pown'..)
