Hi, I recently finished my build and went straight into OCing to 4.8 per a guide on this forum by you and after I follow the guide to the end, I reboot and went into windows itself. To confirm the OC, I used the ROG - CPUID and saw that the processor is still running at stock 3.4ghz. Another thing, hyper-threading is enabled but CPUID shows 4 instead of 8 threads. here's the link that I used and I followed the quick OC guide
http://www.asusrog.com/forums/showth...clocking-Guide
My setup as follows
i7 2600k
Maximus IV extreme B3 revision / Bios 1303
Matrix Platinum gtx 580 OC to 925ghz / 1.150v
Corsair XMS 3 4x4gb 1600C9
H70 cooler
Thanks, Max

Hi Max,
Clear CMOS, check CPUID at stock to see if HT is enabled. Also ensure you are using the latest version of CPU-Z.

I cleared CMOS, thread shows 4, core shows 2, and I'm using the regular CPU-Z 1.58 not the ASUS ROG version. Do I need to do something in the BIOS? Apologies in advance I'm new to ASUS mb, evga mb was what I had last.

Could it be that I'm using windows 7 home premium 64bit sp1. Also, my mb bios is ver.1303

Flash to the latest BIOS (1850 it is listed in this forum), let me know what that does. If that does not help, save a screenshot of the CPU configuration screen of EFI to a flash drive and upload it here please.
This is a retail CPU and not an ES right?

Also, on the mb I noticed that the power plug for the mb is a 4-pin instead of 8-pin. Any significant difference?

yes, retail I bought it through tigerdirect "Intel Core i7-2600K BX80623I72600K Unlocked Processor - Quad Core, 8MB L3 Cache, 3.40 GHz, Socket H2 (LGA1155), Retail" . what's ES? and do you have a guide on how to reflash the bios, I planned on reflashing the second bios

FYI, when I setup the new rig I took the ssd from my last rig and stuck it into the new rig. does it matter if a fresh OS install happen or not?

That's the problem I bet - reinstall the OS.

i would still flash to the newer bios. there is a bios utility that uploads the bios file or you can use USB Bios flashback which is quicker. tips here: http://www.asusrog.com/forums/showthread.php?1142-How-to-use-ASUS-ROG-USB-BIOS-Flashback&highlight=bios+flashback
for your power connector, the board support 8 pin power. there may be a cap covering the other 4 pins so be sure to take it off. and if your power supply supports 8pin which most these days should you should definitely use it.

So I did the following, connected the 8-pin power to the mb, reflash the BIOS to 1850, fresh reinstall of Windows 7 home premium 64bits, reinstall of all the softwares.

Never seen this before. What MEI drivers are you using?

MEI version 7.0.0.1144 straight from the software disc that came with the mb

This is strange, by default retail versions of Win 7 will enable all active cores.
Go to Device Manager and remove all of the CPU related drivers. Let the system reinstall them and then type MSCONFIG into the command line, go to BOOT and then click the Advanced tab. In the Advanced tab set the number of active cores.
If that does not work, check the CPU socket for bent pins.

if the pins are bent then RMA the mb or?.......
Raja@ASUS
07-20-2011, 08:37 AM
If the pins are bent then the RMA will be void as this is classified as user damage, so you will be charged for the repair. I know hindsight is wonderful, but you should have seen the bent pins before installing the CPU...

So I just removed the CPU and the contact points looks good nothing suggesting damage and no bent pins on the CPU sockets either. So what's next that i can check.

Have you checked what I said about Windows above? If that does not work its either the CPU or board. If you can try the CPU in a friend's board or whatever that will confirm. Failing that you can try an RMA.

Yeah I already did the msconfig thing in Windows but still nothing.

Hi Max,
Then the only thing left is to check the CPU. You can RMA the board (ROG boards have advanced RMA so you won't be without a system waiting for a board). If the RMA does not cure it, then you will have to RMA your CPU.
Lastly, the only other thing that would cause this is a hacked or modified OS, which should not apply in your case as you're on an unhacked/unmodified retail copy.

Firstly, I appreciate all your help. This is what customer service is all about. Now, I RMA the board through the company that I bought it from right and can you clarify what you mean that ROG boards get advanced RMA. Thx a lot raja

Advanced RMA basically means cross ship. You can have a replacement board before you send yours back. ASUS will put a hold on your credit card so you don't pull any funny business but otherwise it's a good thing because you can be up and running much much quicker.

Update, so I removed the cpu and check for any abnormal stuff and for the cpu socket no bent pins. Reinstalled and still the same problems. I called a cpu tech support today and she thinks its the mb too so hopefully it is. Next week I get the new mb from tigerdirect.com, hopefully. One question, will a cpu still work if a pin was bent just curious and for knowledge.

So today I manage to oc to my desired speed. Disabling C1E, EIST, and C3/C6 allowed the oc and disabling HT in bios changed the core from 2 to 4 but thread remain at 4 in ROG CPU-Z 1.57

got the problem fixed and now FULLY functional. I had the NUMBER OF PROCESSOR checked under msconfig so that I guess conflicted with the bios setting. I Learnt something new today. THX for your help anyways guys.

This should not happen by default on a Windows install - in fact, it never happens.

New Intel microcode is not for ES's. You should not be using an ES at this point anyway.

so there's nothing to do against that?
only a retail cpu will fix it?

Yes, you need a retail CPU.
