M4E USB problems

On Win7 64 bit, device manager is showing an unknown device and I have 4 USB ports that don't work. When I plug an optical mouse into any of these ports, Win7 doesn't detect that I've plugged anything in and the light on the mouse doesn't come on.
I have all the latest drivers from the Asus site and have updated to the 1409 bios. Everything else seems to be working just fine.
Does anyone know which USB controller controls these 4 USB ports?
Any suggestions as to how to proceed to find a fix?

Is this on the USB 3.0 ports? If so I think some people have had temporary luck by doing a cmos/bios reset. I'm not sure exactly what the cause or fix is though. I think the following thread might look familiar:

Thanks. I saw a post on this site that said to change from PCH to NEC in bios. I did that and all is well--at least for now. I'll be back if things change.
