Update: *2/15/11
I know this is long overdue, but here is the latest update i can give you guys on iphone support on ROG boards. First of all due to apple's bluetooth implementation, the functionality will be slightly limited when compared to an android based phone. Note that the way you enable RC connect and Idirect are different. Thus due to apple's bluetooth implementation, you can utilize idirect on any ROG board the offers ROG connect even if it doesn't have the RC bluetooth module. You can connect through USB, Wifi, and a bluetooth dongle/adapter.
First of all, the only boards i have personally tested our phones on so far are the Rampage III Extreme, Maximus IV Extreme, and Crosshair IV Extreme.
I will try and do a nicer guide in the coming days, but for the time being here are the few things you need to know.
You need idirect installed on your phone and you need mobilink installed on your computer.
Typically with RC Connect on android you press the RC connect button to activate the rog connect through your phone. if this is "on" then in windows this will disable your bluetooth functionality. NOW with Idirect, you HAVE to connect through the windows bluetooth, so you DONT want to press the RC connect button. you want to leave bluetooth within windows on. so do the opposite as you were to do for RC connect.
Lastly you WILL need tethering enabled and bluetooth enabled.
search and pair your bluetooth with your phone, make sure they are connected.
fire up your idirect app on your phone, go to settings and make sure your connection is set to bluetooth. it should make the detection.
Now here is whats tricky...
Rampage III Extreme with IOS3.x does not come with tethering.
Rampage III Extreme with IOS3.x jailbreak allows tethering but i have not had any success in getting it to connect.
Rampage III Extreme with IOS4.x allows tethering but you have to pay. I was able to successfully connect.
Rampage III Extreme with IOS4.x jailbreak allows free tethering. This successfully connected.
Maximus IV Extreme with IOS3.x jailbreak was able to connect.
Update: *2/17/11
below we have a chart that shows you which boards are supposed to be compatible under ios4 non jail broken. I have not tested it with a jail broken phone so if anyone has feedback please let me know from your tests. HELP THE COMMUNITY OUT, I CAN'T DO IT ALONE!
Features: are the ROG connect through a notebook or another computer, RC bluetooth for Android, windows mobile, and symbian support, and rog idirect for iOS support.
Host: has the compatible motherboards, compatible OS, the latest software updates needed to run properly
Remote: are the devices that you can use, compatible OS, and software needed to run properly.

ill do some more testing and try to do a nicer guide but for the time being, i hope this helps

Hi,
Is there any step-by-step manual what and how to make this connection happen?
I've tried and apparently I am missing some important step, as my iPhone - 3GS - is marked with the yellow triangle in the blotooth devices list in Win7 64bit.
Any hints? Drivers my system is missing?
Does connection require specific port to open in WiFi? (WiFi was my second try when blotooth did not worked.
What cable is used and how connection is made for USB type of connection?
Please advice,
BiPiotr

As for USB I imagine it is the plug that comes with iPhone
Brian@ASUS

rog connect via phone only works with rog boards that support the bluetooth module. for example, maximus iii extreme, rampage iii extreme. you have to plug in the provided bluetooth adapter to the rog connect socket and press the bluetooth button to activate it. your iphone should have bluetooth enabled.

What I've checked at first?
Exactly the options you are talking.
Problem is that Win7 wants to install some drivers which are not available nor locally nor on Win Update service.
As far as USB is concerned, same result ... Tried it and nothing happened.
And yes, I do have Asus R3E ...
Apprieciate your tries but guys believe me, I tried to do my best homework without bothering you men from the forum ....

Hi Brian,
I saw the demo movie when one of the Asus crew members is doing his magic with iPhone and maybe there is a way to get the tech tooltips from the developer of an app directly? Or could you get/borrow/steal from them engineers manual? You know it is really frustrating when new excellent toys Asus is providing are leaving poor users without any assistance when it is so awesome that they actually did this Apple thing;-)
Best regards,
Piotr

Victus,
We all can live with the other tools from great toolbox as delivered/downloaded but ....
The point is when some great feature is part of the advertisement and is supposed to provide "added value"which makes THIS product better and is making sort of "selling point", then WE, Community of The Users, have the right to have it working. There is even lack of proper support on the very own Asus support portal.
What it is telling us?
Answer yourself.

Hello...I was wondering if there has been any update on this issue? I just got my new computer with the R3E motherboard on 7 Oct. 2010 and have been having the same problem that others have mentioned above with pairing my iPhone to the computer. I have the most recent updates of the Toshiba bluetooth stack installed, along with running iOS 4.1 on the iphone. I also downloaded from iTunes the ROG iDirect, but still no luck with pairing my iPhone to the computer.
Thanks.

Having the same problem... R3E and iPhone 4/ios4.1. Installed mobilink 10016 and bluetooth driver package. Enabled bluetooth and added a new connection, and was able to connect to the iPhone, but the iPhone tells me it's not supported right after I complete the pairing. I did notice in the iDirect guide that Internet Tethering needs to be turned on, and my phone wants me to purchase something to do that. Please tell me that this app does not rely on tethering! I also tried creating a PAN on my system but the error message indicates that the iPhone's PAN is the issue.

Yes Brian...I did use the above drivers. I reinstalled them just now, but still could not connect my iPhone 3Gs. I get the message "Pairing unsuccessful...make sure "Computer" is turned on, in range, and is ready to pair." The computer is on, in range of the iPhone, and is ready to pair....the bluetooth stack from Toshiba has found my iPhone...but pairing has failed yet again.
I also get the message on the computer from the Bluetooth PAN Client stating that "Connection has been denied by PAN server [iPhone]."
Ideas?

I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, and had already installed MobilLink v10016. I have the exact same issue... Try to connect using the Bluetooth Manager, the PC successfully sends a PIN and pairing dialog to my iPhone 4 which I accept, but I can never actually start the connection. If I try to connect using the iPhone, I get the "device not supported" message, with my only option as "Forget this Device." If I try to start it from the Bluetooth Manager screen, I get a system tray alert telling me that authentication failed, and an alert dialog that indicates the "bluetooth connection has been denied by PAN server [iPhone]."
I have also tried connecting over WiFi using the ROG iDirect app with no success. This seems like such an awesome feature but I can't for the life of me get it to work!
I'm right with you all in regards to the Bluetooth connection. I also always get the PAN server connection denied problem, but had ignored it because I just thought it was my iPod being a pain in the rear. But I have been able to successfully use the WiFi connection to tweak my board on the iPod. I absolutely love it, but I would like to be able to use the Bluetooth connection.

I was able to run the app from my IPhone4 with wifi connection until yesterday...
On App Store I got the iDirect update to vers. 1.0.0.12 and installed. Well, can't connect no more or seems like this. I get "Warning, not support" trying to access one menu.
Enybody else have the same issue or knows something more???
P.S. re-installed version 1.0.0.11 and no problem with it and work fine!

hey guys, i did some testing, and first off you need to have i0s 4.0+ you need to have tethering enabled. bluetooth on your phone. where normally you press the rc bluetooth button for droid phones, for idirect, you do not press it. you will actually connect to your windows bluetooth devices. once you are connected, you should be able to use idirect.
let me know if this works for you guys.

Thanks for all the information on this and several other threads, Brian. It's seems very difficult to find any information on implementing these tools on iPhone.
Tethering is a paid add-on feature for AT&T - and at $25/month, I would prefer to use the Wi-Fi or USB option as implied by the app. That being said, both those options don't seem to work. Are there any special instructions I should follow? Or do iPhone users have to stick with using the Bluetooth solution (which I'm sure works if you are paying for tethering.) One of the primary reasons for me buying this board was to somehow utilize this feature - but, as with others, I am having a tough time getting any of it to work.
Any info is greatly appreciated!

too my knowledge, doesnt at&t only charger for the data sent and received? or do they charge you right away when you press ok to tethering? my phone is a jailbroken 3gs on 3.x os. so far i havent had any luck getting an r3e to work, but on a legit iphone 4 it worked, with the latest idirect update and mobilink. i havent tested the usb connect or wifi yet, for usb connect you will need to set tethering as well. for wifi there is no need for tethering.
you need to create an adhoc and input your IP address into the idirect OS. again i have not successfully done this on my 3.x os but will try it on the 4.x when i get a chance.

Brian,
Tethering is not a standard feature on the iPhone. AT&T charges and additional $20/month on top of their biggest data plan for tethering. And from what you are telling me, it sounds like the USB option also requires tethering.
I am using an iPhone 4 with iOS 4.2 which is not jailbroken, which only leaves me the WiFi option - and I can confirm that it does not work.
Let me know if you would like me to test out any specific methods or beta builds of the app to make any of these options work without Jailbreaking or without Tethering. I'd be happy to help in this endeavor.

yea ill let you guys know when it starts to work. Our taiwan team designed it to based on their knowledge of iphone over there. and in taiwan and the rest of the world, tethering is free and comes standard. its only USA that has this crap locked. and honestly its Apple's bad on their limited functionality on bluetooth. hope you guys understand the struggle with this compared to droid or other apps. ill let you know when we get some newer updates.

I get the sense that it won't ever happen. I, too, opted for this motherboard for the same reason. (Not my primary reason, but it was one of the reasons why I opted for this board vs. the competition.)
With the focus currently on newer Sandy Bridge products, and the fact that this board is close to a year old already...I just don't see any developments happening.

Okay I checked both Verizon amd AT&T iPhone plans. You need to be subscribed to both a Data Plan and the tethering option.
Verizon
Unlimited data for $30/month (temporary offer).
2 GB of data for tethering or hot-spotting for $20/month
AT&T
200 MB for $15/month.
2 GB for $25/month.
Tethering for $20/month; no additional data included. (No hot-spotting available.)

...which is why I refuse to pay AT&T for a feature that should be included in their 2GB monthly plan....they make no sense charging an additional fee for tethering. If you use 2GB, you use 2GB...it shouldn't matter if it's tethered or directly used on the phone.
I may jailbreak using greenpoison...seems easy enough to do.

I have the Data plan which allows access to the internet the Tethering is another charge on top of the Data plan. Both Verizon and AT&T want to make some extra money allowing you to use your phone as a modem to connect your laptop to the internet. Best option i guess would be to be able to use WiFi to connext to the R3E. But for some reason that doesn't work either. I'm not sure if it's the phone or if I am just doing something wrong connecting. I know that when my phone connects to my home network that I don't get charged for any Data usage on my plan.
I understand that tethering is the issue for bluetooth connections on the iPhone, but why does it fail to connect to the iPod? Obviously tethering isn't an issue with it. I still cannot get these two to pair, much less use iDirect. Not to mention the latest update to the iDirect app killed all my connections. I was able to at least use USB or wi-fi with the previous version.

I just noticed this feature was released for iphone and ipad. I've read all i can to get this feature going, but still epic fail for me. I didnt install the bluetooth connector to motherboard when i built this rig. I just want to use the WIFI to connect. It just wont work. Still all i get is "unable to connect to the computer. Please check the connection type in connection," I have selected WIFI in connection and typed in IP Address. Nothing. Am i missing a step here? Any suggestions? Cheers

The current version of the application is broken and they have yet to release a fix.
It would be nice if they made the IPA for the earlier version of the app available so we could at least roll it back. The board may not be bleeding edge flagship it once was, but it's most certainly not a bargain bin special either. I was hoping it would be afforded a bit more post release attention. Rather irritating to have an advertised, not to mention useful function, be broken in the course of an update go seemingly unacknowledged. I've always liked the build quality of ASUS boards, but the post release support has sometimes left a bad taste in my mouth, and was a consideration for me during the final decision that lead to me buying this board. No one is asking for daily progress reports and monthly BIOS revisions, but an update that renders a function unusable should warrant some level of acknowledgement.

Unfortunately I dont think it will ever get fixed because its my understanding that they dont think there is anything wrong with it since it works just fine if you use bluetooth with tethering.
I've been waiting for almost 8 months for a solution since I bought this mobo. Id say its pretty hopeless at this point.
