*shrug* I had some ebay gift cards that were burning a hole in my pocket so after rebates I'm paying about $450 out of pocket for a Xeon x5650. Depending on overclock I could hit 50KPPD as well and I have the option of doubling that when I find another good CPU deal. I think it will be a while before we see dual SB folding so I'm not so sure I agree with your assessment.

To further put this into perspective let's just talk raw numbers. I know that architecture improvements may help folding but until we see that play out we can really only compare raw cycles: Stock 2600K is 4core * 3.4GHz. Assuming you get it to 5GHz (a nearly 50% OC) you will have 20GHz of processing power. A 6 core chip only needs to hit 3.33GHz to have the same number of raw cycles (a mere 25% OC for the x5650 which is stock 2.66).

But I hope that everyone thinks like you that SB is the best thing since sliced bread because I'd love to pick up a mate for my CPU on the cheap

Yep, it will work fine until I get another CPU. It even has jumpers to completely disable either one of the sockets if you like. And it doesn't have to be the same CPU either. If I get a good deal on an x5670 or something it will drop right in as long as it's the same family. It's flexible enough that you could even run a hex and quad together.

didn't know that. So 3 memory channels per cpu... Not that youd want to, but can you load one cpu up with 48 gigs? That board is huge

might as well just get a server because thats basically what it is.
    ASUS is pronounced "Ay-SOOS"
    ROG should be pronounced "R - O - G"

I'm not sure what limits the memory on this board. There are 12 memory slots total so you could physically populate it with 192GB of memory but supposedly the limit is 48. As to whether it can all be used by one CPU? Maybe I'll try putting some memory in the second bank to see if it shows up just for kicks but I suspect not since a memory controller would be missing.

Yeah I know the board is huge :-/ I actually wish they hadn't included all of the PCI-E and memory slots because I won't use them and they make the board too big. There's no other board like it in the world so I don't have a choice. It's just naked and mounted on a single sheet of plexi since I don't have a case to fit it. There are a few cases that can be shoehorned to work or are way over-sized but I think eventually I'm going to build a case from scratch.

Yeah, I tried a regular server but I'm an overclocker at heart. Even if the system would have become unstable 1MHz above stock it was driving me nuts not being able to try.

Don't worry Brian, I still <3 ASUS. I've got three rigs built on ASUS motherboards right now.

Each CPU have his own memory channel. So it wouldn't work to put mem in the second lane with CPU in the first. Also, under good OC and 100% load the board seems really unreliable. With 2 CPU loaded in for sure. Just to much power for what the board can handle. Don't get it to far if you don't want to pay for the most expensive RMA of your life ( not cheap to ship ahah XD ) But running the thing on mid OC with 2 CPU will be able to crush some heavy number
