Hello and welcome to the forum.
Please provide a full list of your hardware.
But no that should not be happening.

I think I got it worked out. It looked to be caused by bad ram. I had some mushkin dual channel in before and I just replaced it with some quad and it fired right up. It still wont run at the right speed but im sure that will come when I get around to flashing to the newest bios.
When you say the right speed, I think the board is running at the right speed. To get your ram working at the rated specification, the speed on the sticker, if that speed is not the default spec of the chip-set you have to set it manually or use the XMP.

now for a stupid question. where do i find where to put it into xmp? I have always put in the speed and timings manualy but id rather use XMP. I skimmed through the bios but I didint see anything for XMP.
mrblond - I really would like to tell you. But since you have not been so kind as to share what your hardware is I can not do so with certaintly but normally it is found AI Overclock Tuner. There are a couple of options. AUTO, Manul, XMP Profile

OH, sorry. My mobo is a RIVE. ram are Mushkin Redlines pc 17000, the cpu is a i7 3960x and have 2 580 ultras powered by an ax 1200.
Setting your ram primary settings and voltages manually is the better of the two options.
The XMP profile can be found in the AI Overclock Tuners for the RIVE
Now as to why the quad kit worked, simple really it is designed for your board. The dual kit was not.
This is a recurring theme actually, as most folks expect DDR3 to be well DDR3, in other words ram is ran and should just work across all platforms simply because it looks the same and says that it is DD3 on the label. But that is not he case. Some of the time you might get lucky and your ram will work, however if at all possible it is better to select the ram to match your motherboard. As each chipset has its own unique specification. Just think back to the LGA 775 boards that had DDR3. I needed to put 1.85volts into my sticks as stock. Still DDR3 and still look the same.
