Just wondering when will G75 become available in North America (based on how long it took G74 to become available)? Also does that mean G74 prices will drop to clearance level in the next couple of months? Given that G75 is rumoured to include 670M, what level of general gaming performance bump should we be expecting?

I am thinking of the following NH71 @ Newegg for $1329

    Thanks

Based on the experience of the G73, the G74 isn't likely to be discontinued or placed on clearance anywhere. Asus always seems to have literally dozens of models/configurations available at any given time, so they could all "co-exist," .....but I would suspect the G73 to be retired before the G74.

In any event, they aren't going to tell us any of this ahead of time.

As for the cpu, yeah, its an involved process requiring disassembly of your G74...not for the faint of heart (I haven't even attempted it yet...still under warranty). I plan to keep my G74 for a few years (bought in october 2011), and maybe next year grab a 2960XM (the current fastest mobile processor) when they're alot cheaper and install it, just to stave off the inevitable climb towards obsolescence.

Well, you'll come close to the 570m. But you seem to forget that you can overclock the 570m as well ;-)

Anyways, for the G75 i'm hoping they'll for starters switch out the horrible wifi card (that most people seem to change themselves anyway), and also ofc, fix the damn Throttling bug -_-

Other than that i'm just as eager as anyone. I still haven't lost hope since sending my G53SX back (love the design and feel of the G-series, and the cooling ofc!). So i'm gonna hold on to my money and wait and see :-)

there is only 1 reason why I would upgrade from my current g74, and its as simple as 2 little words. "Num Lock". Sure the rest of the specs look fabulous, but just because the g75 comes out does not mean that a finely tuned g74 can no longer compete in todays market. I'm too am with the idea of letting this new model pass by.

I would wait Until the new processors have been out for at least a couple months. Just like with the first sandy bridge processors for mobile I'm sure the next step up will have its problems. I am in love with this laptop and i just have a minor step down from yours. I may get a new laptop next year. But this year I'm going to get myself parts for a big rig gaming rig I done codenamed this laptop Kraytos What are you looking to get out of it. It really depends on the games you play or what you do with your laptop.

Maybe Asus placed the Calculator instead of Num Lock on G74 so that people like you would buy the next model?
In all seriousness it seems that they listened to it's customers, seems like Num Lock will be returning on G75, rejoice^^

I gotta say that one thing I *do* like about the G75 is the ability to get at the fans for the necessary occasional cleaning and WD40 in the bearings (I swear by this!). That and the numlock key would make me take a second look later this year, maybe. But for now me and my G74 are getting along just fine.

Is there a master list of Asus G74 models? just trying to find good price is near impossible as every retailer seems to have different model (NH71, XC1 etc) and all retailers list specs in different way so its headache inducing to find the differences in the model. So the differences i have tried to line up.

    bluray vs simple DL DVD/RW
HDD/SSD flavours (one or two and different sized)
screen (900p, 1080p, 1080p LED, 1080p LED 3D) (this is espcially troublesome as i dont know if can believe reviews as they usually tend to be of the high end displays and i might end up with something else entirely)
    RAM (6 - 16GB)
Vid card (apparently bestbuy ones are nerfed. not sure if its a specific model or just best buy)
CPU (so far two flavours of i7. 2Ghz and 2.2GHz)

    Anything else?

No, there's no master list. Welcome to the joys of Asus. I think the easiest approach is to decide which options you want, within the parameters that difer. And as you noted, there aren't that many of those.
    • 3D or 2D
    • ODD
    • HDD config
    • RAM
    • Processor speed
    • Full HD or HD+
    • Video bus width & VRAM

Once you have decided which options you'd prefer, then look for a configuration to match.

    Just picked up the following:
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...ku=A50-1733001

Could any here confirm that this is not the crippled 560M?
