XMP problems

Hello there i am currently working on the a build with the follow specs:
i7 950 stock settings
R3E
2000mhz corsair dominator GT also tried 2000mhz XMS 3 cas 9

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145320
corsair h70 cpu cooler
AX1200 corsair PSU
3x corsair f60 ssd raid 0
470gtx
cooler master HAF X
sony blue ray odd

BIOS 1 : 1102
BIOS 2: 0402

I am going to list the events in a chronological order:

1: Installed XMS3 2000mhz RAM 3x2gb. Tried to use XMP profile. (bios is 1102). It wouldnt turn on, i have a laptop ROG connected and the POST msg was Detect memory and it froze at that. I was able to overclock the XMS3 to 2000mghz 9 9 9 24 1.65v Manually and it works fine. XPM still does not work.

2: decided to upgrade memory thinkin its the RAM. I got Dominator 2000mhz 9 10 9 27 and it also does not work in XMP. By now i am what the hell! during a boot while trying XMP, it said bad BIOS check sum, so it looked through USB and my ODD and it found my ASUS rampage driver disc and it did an auto bios flash back to 0402 ( that why one of my bios is down graded)

the computer restarted and XMP works with bios 0402. ( on my 2nd bios chip) and no XMP works with bios 1 (1202)

Now i want to say i was able to manually set my memory to 2000mhz with the same specs that xmp has. My problem is if im paying 400$ (incl. tax) why isnt XMP working with the latest bios.

p.s. is runing a very old bios 0402 a bad thing , i read alot of reviews saying early R3E bioses were unstable during OC and other times.

p.s.s. just got done talking to an ASUS rep, who told me to contact corsair or intel o.O .

dont use xmp mode, those preset bios templates are strenuous, set to manual, inter settings urself

Agreed, manual settings are a must, you can choose the template for the DRAM setting, but set timings and voltage manualy. I would also suggest using 1.66v most recommend this setting for ram and it should be safe. I would also recommend setting voltage for the QPI and VCORE manually as well.

i usually leave qpi on auto havent seen a diff either way

QPI/DRAM Voltage will help with OCing especially when it comes to memory speeds and timings.

What settings would you recommend for the my ram
So far i got
btw i am keeping the dominator gt 2000mhz 3x4gb
9-10-9-27 1.66 (instead of 1.65)
xmp usualy sets the cpu to 1.25 (1.2 is default right?)
blck 143
22 mult

what about the voltages to qpi and vcore? the processor goes from 3.06 to 3.1+

so i understand the consensus is no xmp, but im still curious why xmp works with my old bios but not new?

If your OC is stable at default VCORE then don't touch it. You will only need to adjust VCORE if you are pushing an OC and you start to get BSOD's. If your system is stable at where you want it don't touch it. I myself to get 4GHz with my memory running at 1600MHz I need a 1.4v core to hit it. It al depends on your chip and mine is pretty poor.

http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/22106-core-i7-overclocking-guide-beginners.html

Take a look at this guide for pointers on OCing a Core i7.

yea every chip needs diff volts, also keep in mind or with mine anyways if i want a 4.6 it takes 1.45 but after a day or so run in i can lower it to 1.4 so i dunno if all chips are that way but seems mine is at any setting, like a learning curve, run a day or so then i can lower t a lil

I read the guide to overclocking the cpu. Even though the article was godly and very informative im not interested in bringing the i7 950 above 3.5ghz im looking for a VERY stable build. I program some odd jobs here and then i run them for hours scanning for data. Some of my scripts ran for 6 days non stop. Though they only need less then 5% of the cpu, I cannot afford a BSOD.

What i am interested in is getting my memory to 2000mhz at the correct voltages and settings. Thats why i was stressing about XMP because i care for more stability then speed. Though i do love speed and thats why i bought 2ghz ram.
How do i find out what my memmory settings required them to run at 2000mhz.
so far what i had was
9-10-9-27 1.66 (instead of 1.65)
cpu to 1.20

2006mhz
What should i set qpi/dram voltage? auto?
if im missing any settings let me know

Intel recommends a QPI/DRAM voltage of 1.375v, although leaving it on auto sets it to something like 1.1v. This is the Memory Controller voltage on the chip and should always be lower then the CPU VCORE.

You should not need to adjust the BCLK at all when using XMP, thats what XMP was designed to do is run at the rated speed with default clocks. It is however recommended to run your memory manually. You can set the DRAM speed through the bios the option is called DRAM Frequency. I'd then suggest setting the timings manualy to 9,10,9,27 at 2T or 2N at 1.66v and give it a shot. Just so you know, 2000MHz memory is sketchy and most never run it at the rated speed of 2000MHz. You may try to loosen timings aswell 11,11,11,30 2T or 2N. To set 2T or 2N the option is called Timing Mode under DRAM Timing Control and I would suggest no less then 2N.
