crosshair V formula starts then stops

I am building a new system and received the last of my parts today. I put everything together, and my crosshair v formula started blinking DRAM LEDs and had a constant red CPU led. I followed the instructions on the forums, reseating the cpu, one stick of memory to the slot furthest from the cpu, unplugging all non-vital parts, and got the bios to post once. I shut down plugged in the hard drive and now it appears to start up for about a second then stops. the start & reset button are glowing. i unplugged the hard drive and get the same problem. any thoughts?

    my specs:
Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s
EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti
    ASUS Crosshair V Formula
    AMD FX-8120
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro Gold Series RS800-80GAD3-US 800W ATX 12V v2.3
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

    Thanks!
    kt

I will say you have to upgrade the BIOS to a version that support the FX-820, but what I found strange is the fact you go once in the BIOS,,, do you have the BIOS version ?

That date should make the EFI version 1003 which should definitely support the 8120, I ran my 8150 on that version for a while.

    What I'd recommend:

    1. Power off completely remove 120V cable to PSU
    2. Check a few things:
Video Card: Seated properly, PCI-E power connecters connected to video card
Power supply: CPU4+4 connected to only the EATX12V located to the upper left of the MB
Thermal: Proper contact with CPU cooler, Thermal compound properly applied, fan plugged into CPU_FAN.
    3. Install only 1 memory module into DIMM A1 (left most closest to CPU)
    4. Clear RTC RAM (see 2-18 in manual)
    5. Try and boot to EFI

I know I had one hell of a hard time booting the first time and all these things above helped me out.

If you look at the sticker that is near the SATA ports - it has a long number the last four digits are your BIOS version.

The fact you got to BIOS once is significant.

Check your CPU pins are not missing or bent flat.

Do you have an older Phenom II CPU that you can install, then try posting with it?

Thanks all! I tried all of your suggestions with no success. In the end I borrowed a power supply tester and voila! It crapped out, must have been after I got the MB to post. So off to the store..

Ah the dreaded PSU fail. Seems to be the flavour of the week right now. Amazing how that happens, one themed problem just seems to keep on giving for a week or so and then a new trend rears its ugly head.

Let us know how it goes please.

This is why I got a UPS.

I used to blow though power supplies in 1 to 2 years but my current PSU has lasted 3.5 years and it is still running strong.

Glad to hear you've at least isolated the issue.

As HiVizMan said, please let us know how that works.
