New Build Initial Post problems

bradrcfii1
Level 7
During the post process, my screen stays dark, does not seem to get a signal. Additionally, the Post stops with Code A2 displayed. I have an SSD attached to the sata 3 port and an optical drive attached the to black sata posts. I have tried them all. Additionally, I noticed an Led light on next to the PCIe lane 1 switch.

Any ideas what all this means?

PS: Not sure if it matters but I have an analog monitor cable using a dvi adaptor.

Thanks,
Brad

make sure you have you power connectors connected to the GPU. Also, are you using both the 8-pin and 4-pin 12v connectors on the board?

-ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
-Intel i7-3930k @4.42GHz
-16GB CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 2133MHz
-Corsair Force Series GT SSD 240GB
- 2x 3TB WD Caviar Black (RAID 1)
- XFX ProSeries 1250W PSU
-3x ASUS VE248Q 24" Monitor
- 2x XFX 7970R
- Xigmatek Elysium Black Case
- CORSAIR H100 CPU Cooler
- Logitech G500 Mouse

Thanks you for your prompt reply.

There are two four pin connectors at the top of the board and yes, the are connected.

I am not aware of any other power connectors other than the 24 pin and the six pin by the PCIe lanes.

Did I miss something?.

edit: I just looked at the manual. The manual shows a four and an 8 pin power connector at the top of the board. My board does not look like this. It has two four pin connectors?

there is a plastic cap on the 4-pin 12v connector closest to the reat I/O panel that comes off. i almost missed it myself, but it is indeed a 8-pin connector. Also make sure the PCIe x16 lane is enabled/on. There is 4 switches near the far right of the motherboard labled 1-4. these are for your PCIe x16 lanes. It allows you to turn them on and off.

I can't wait to get home and look at the power connector you described. I do not see how a cap can hide two more connectors. I currently have it attached to a four pin power cable from the PSU.

I have checked the pcie lane switches, they are all on assuming the switch position for on is to the left.

Edit: just looked at the manual. The picture sows the 8 pin away from the I/O panel.

it actually says on/off on the switches. You also migh want to try another PCIe x16 lane. Lane 3 to be exact. Try another cable as well. a HDMI or DVI. The adapter may be the problem but it is rare.

One more thing you can try. Remove all memory but one DIMM, and make sure you populate the DIMM Slot closest to the 24-PIN power connector. See if the problem still occurs then.

Note: I stand corrected the 8-Pin 12v connector on the back of the board is the one farthest from the rear I/O Panel. You can see in the Pic below.

If there is an 8 pin connector, then I am sure that is the problem. I thought it was strange to see what I think are two four pin power connectors. I will look for the cap when I get home.

Thanks again for your help as this has frustrated me. I have never had a problem with a build.

no problem, let us know how it turns out for you.

I ordered a native DVI cable.

I noticed you achieved 4.2Ghz. Did you stop at 4.2Ghz due to temps? I was hoping to get to 4.8 or even 4.8Ghz. I think I have more cooling capacity than a H100 can provide.

nope stopped because i am still learning how to OC, and 4.42 from 3.5 is good enough for my needs 🙂 My temps are 31c/46c
