Rampage IV Extreme - Intermittent Shutdown Problems

Hi all, I was wondering if you could offer me any insight. I just recently obtained a R4E board. I'm running a 3960X @ 4.7 on it, with some slight adjustments to VCore, VCCSA, clockgen filter, etc. All the standard tweaks that most people seem to be making on this board.

The system is rock solid stable with one exception. Intermittently, it fails to shudown gracefully (it effectively hangs at a black screen without actually powering down). After this occurs, when it comes back up it gives the "overclocking failed" message. Note that this does not always happen, as it frequently shuts down properly. It seems to happen more frequently when I bring the system up from sleep mode and then power it down quickly thereafter. Also note that the system always goes to sleep and wakes up properly - the intermittent shutdown hang is the only problem I am currently experiencing.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any suggested tweaks that I can make?

I should note that I do have all the CPU power saving options on (speedstep, C1E) and would prefer to leave them on if I can find a solution that enables me to.

    Thanks for your assistance.

i would check 2 things, double check your memory configuration. I had the overclocking message happening when i set my memory mode to 2, but for my memory that was an incorrect setting.

Also what is the system plugged into and what PSU do you have? I was having a very similar problem with my ax1200 and i think my UPS was actually starving it for power. Since i replaced the UPS i have not had a shutdown.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had memory mode set to 2, I will change it to 1 and see what happens. I am using a Corsair HX1000 PSU plugged right into a surge protector to the wall (no UPS).

This issue also just happened coming back from sleep. So it now doesn't appear to be happening on shutdowns only.

Tried mode 1 for the memory. System still seemed stable (ran Prime95 for a while), but did not fix the intermittent issues hanging on shutdown and not resuming from sleep.

Is the system just hanging on shutdown or is it also failing to wake from sleep properly?

Your full system specs would be helpful.

    Hello

It sounds like your memory needs to be the focus of our attempts to find a solution. If you could download memtest86 and run the application with each stick of ram at the settings you are aiming for. If your ram passes two cycles of memtest then that stick and that slot is fine.

I tend to then move a 100% confirmed working stick of ram to the next slot and test them all.
Once all have passed I would then start to test dual channel and then finally quad channel.

If your ram has passed all these tests then that is one very critical variable which we can then tick a box as done. Ram is in my view the most common reason for problems with the X79 platform.

mdzcpa: It is hanging on shutdown and also waking up from sleep. The hang on shutdown seems 100% reproducable if I put the computer to sleep, wake it up successfully, and then immediately attempt a shutdown.

I will try and do some memtesting this weekend. I'm going to try another kit of RAM. I'm currently using some Dominator GT 2000s. I bought two 8 gig kits (2x4) instead of a 16 gig kit and it's also 1.65V rated instead of 1.5V. Could this be related to the issue?

BTW, I also tried running everything at stock (CPU and memory) and the problem still persists.

Anyone have any experience with the Dominator GT 2000 2x4 kits and this board?

What are you seeing in your Windows Event Log? Anything to indicate a hanging application?

You should have no issue with 1.65v memory on the RIVE.

If your using two 8gb kits then its almost certainly memory is the root of the problem as Hiviz and mdzcpa have suggested. That memory is tuned for dual channel use and not the Quad channel X79 format. With tuning it can probably be made to work very well but this will take time and testing. Have you adjusted any timings for the RAM or adjusted any other voltages as VCCSA, PLL and VTT are also very impotant when getting RAM stable on this format.

Took a look at the Windows Event Log, nothing of real interest there. I've got a quad kit (4x4) coming in tomorrow. It's the Corsair Dominator GT 2133 1.5v kit. I'll install it sometime late tomorrow and will report back.
