Rampage IV: Want to upgrade RAM

    Hi Folks,

Currently running a Rampage IV with 16GB G.Skill 2133 RipJaws Z kit (It's 4x4GB modules). I want to upgrade to 32GB, would there be any problem with just adding another 16GB kit, or would I be better off buying a 4x8GB kit? I see a lot of people claiming that 8 different modules that haven't been tested together are unlikely to be stable and I want this system to be as stable as possible.

    Thanks in advance.

If you buy the same exact memory kit and install it, you shouldn't have problems except with XMP detection, as XMP is when you only have one kit installed. And even in some case, XMP is not the most reliable thing... My Kit is a 8x4gb kit from G.Skill also, 1866-DDR3, and when i use XMP my RIVE fails with an "Overclock failed" message and i get stuck with a 12x multiplier... i got around this with help from here and from G.Skill as to input all information manually, and it works like a charm...

In fact, i prefer to enter manually... you have more control... dunno why using XMP on one kit of 8x4gb failed me but when i enter the information manually it works... who knows...

As long as you buy the same exact kit and enter information manually, i don''t think you will encounter problems. Problems arise most of the time when people are using 2 kits and are trying to get it configured using XMP.

If stability is your concern then most certainly go with a single kit of ram. I can not stress enough two kits even of the same brand and model are not guaranteed to work well together at all.

A single kit that has been tested and binned to work together it best. That said, I was able to a second gskill 16gb z kit to my existing one (exact part number) and have had no trouble running the 32gb (8 x4). They run solid under XMP or manual timings.

The safe route, though, is to get the 32 binned kit.

Well... even with a tested single kit, problem can arise... i got a kit of g.skill 8x4gb 1866 and under XMP i get a 12x multiplier... so mixed result... not because it's a single kit, that it will work flawlessly. Believe me

Quite right Rassal there are just to many variable to guarantee anything when it comes to PC and especially the X79 and DDR3 ram. Your CPU plays such a big part - I have a real dog of a CPU will not post any ram clocks worth noting yet clocks the core frequency like a dream, another that will clock ram but not clock the frequency on the core. What I needed was one that did both aspects well on the same CPU. That being said you have a much greater likelihood of success with a picked kit than not.

I just did this the other day,not the gskill brand but I bought 32GB 8 x 4GB sticks of this Mushkin 993997 http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Quad-Kits/993997.aspx ram and installed it to my Rampage 4 Extreme motherboard,I was a bit worried myself that I might run into problems but in the end I didn't have a single problem,I started the pc up went into the bios set the ram to the xmp setting which set all 8 sticks of ram to their default 2133mhz 9-11-10-28 1.65v,I then overclocked the 3930K to 4.6ghz,46 multi and 1.32v vcore and everything is working perfectly stable,I can run the AIDA64 stability test for hours on end no worries at all.

Anyway that's my experience with upgrading to 32GB with this board.

Awesome guys! I'm just going to get a second 16GB kit for now, if I have problems I'll return it and sell the old kit and grab a 32GB kit. Those 32GB kits are pricey!

Just an update to this, I installed the second 16GB kit today, system posted no problems, picked up the XMP profile for both kits at 2133mhz no problem. I ran one iteration of IntelBurnTest on 'maximum' which I believe stresses RAM too and had no problems. I didn't have to bump up voltage to the IMC either. I'll keep an eye out for BSODs but for now it seems like I got lucky.
