    HELP! Memory Leak?

how do you know that your having a memory leak in you ram?in a notebook.

same way youd check if you had a memory leak with a desktop pc, the easiest way is to use event viewer

find the process\exe which you suspect has a problem and check its memory size
use the app\program for a few minutes and re-check its size, rechecking every few minutes
note: if your playing games running arround large areas its normal for the memory usage to increase a lot but it will usualy reduce if you stand stationary for a few minutes.

if you have the app\progam minimised and you watch task manger you will usualy see the memory size will usualy fluctuate up and down over a few minutes, after several minutes you may notice the memory usage drops a lot as more is sent to the page file.

if the memory usage only increases and never decreases then chances are you have a memory leak

there are built in monitoring tools that will show memory usage but these can be tricky to use and will require more than a few lines here, you may also find third party tools which will do the same thing

does this cause random crashes while playin games?or like the screen just go black then sometimes it will disappear then it will come back again and you need to force restart?

no at least not im my experience, a memory leak is more likely to cause your whole pc to crash, usualy you will experience things slowing down which will get worse over time eventualy the whole pc will crash or completly lockup.

if the screen is going black while playing games then returning this sounds more like your graphics drivers have crashed and recovered. you will usualy see this recorded in windows event viewer saying the drivers have crashed and another saying the drivers have recovered. if the drivers fail to recover correctly then this will usualy require a restart of the pc

if this problem only occurs with a particular game you should check your games website for updates\patches. you may also want to check for any known or reported issues on their forums or support knowledge base etc

if this problem occurs in multiple games you should check event viewer (in start start >search\run type eventvwr.msc) to see if you can identify where the problem is occuring

if your laptop uses nvidia graphics chip you may find you need to use an older version of the graphics drivers before you will find a stable version. remember you should uninstall your current drivers before reinstalling newer or older drivers

    Hi

    Which notebook do you have?
and are you on beta driver 301.24?

If yes to the last one, try to downgrade your GPU driver to 285.62 WHQL.
(if you choose to install that driver, be sure to do a clean install, easy way is to click on custom and check for "clean install", then install)
There is people in this forum and over to nVidia forum talking about issues on the latest beta release 301.24.

EDIT: How old is your notebook?

You can try to download CCleaner and run the register check to clean your notebook from old registerfiles that have been left behind from uninstalling/updating programs.

Also be sure to update the atheros wifi card if you got that in your notebook, since it cause a lot of instability if you haven't updated it.
