    Question 7870+CHV=PCI-e@x8

    Hello all,

I just happened to load up GPU-z last night and notice that my single ASUS AMD 7870 is only operating at x8. I know that it'll change version due to power saving however x8 stays the same while it'll go up to 2.0 under load. I have the card in the 1st PCI-e slot with nothing in any of the other slots. I have tried moving the card down to the 3rd slot with the same results. Any ideas? Also will it running at x8 instead of x16 cause a bottleneck? If not I don't really care if it runs at x8 lol. I've not experienced any issues out of the card but I've not really done anything too intensive with it at this point.

Not sure if needed but my CPU is a 955be@3.9Ghz with 16GB of Corsair Vengance CMZ16GX3M4A1600C9 a Corsair CMPSU-800G 800Watt PS and a Corsair Force GT 120GB SSD. I'm also on BIOS 1301.

    Thanks for any help.

This maybe an issue with the card. Have you tried a Different card? If it does the same thing then it's your Motherboard that's at fault and no the CPU nor the BIOS has anything to do with that. At 8x you shouldn't have a problem what so ever but it could mean that your 7870 is failing. I had a simular problem that was one of the reasons I had to do my last RMA on my CHIVF. The difference was that my EVGA 9800GTX+'s were running at 8x on the MB but when I switched them to another they went to the 16x that they were supposed to be at plus I tried 2 other cards with the same result 8x. When my 9800's failed finally the GPU had cracked from heat I guess or maybe age and they did drop to 8x and then a couple weeks later I was hunting for a new card and forced to run a 9600gt till I got a new card.

Thanks for the quick reply. Well crap, I hope its not failing its only about 2 weeks old. Guess I'm going to dust off my old 5770 and see if it runs at x16.

    Thanks again.
