    Frightening sound

    Hello out there. It's been quite a while since I've done a custom build- last time was a P4 machine back in the early 2000's. Then bought an extreme gaming laptop a few years back and been using that until now. I like going extreme, costs more up front but end up getting some pretty good milage out of it. When I have to put the settings on medium and still get lousy performance I know it's time for something new. Been using ASUS mobos since the slot 1 days. That P2B-F board with the 16 megs of EDO and 8x cdrom??? Man that was stylin'!!!

    Anyway to the point- this LGA2011 socket with all these crazy pins is pretty alien to me. I know what the bent pins looks like, I was in there with a magnifying glass and good bright light. Fresh out of the box the pins looked beautiful, non seemed out of whack or longer than the others. The processor sat in the socket perfect- but when I pushed the lock bar back down the crunching sound was kind of horrifying. I remember just dropping the processor into a ZIF socket and the lockbar closing pretty peacefully, or better yet SECC2 was a breeze. Jeez, that sound scarred me for life. $400+ for the mobo and $1000+ for the i7 extreme, I'm almost afraid to power the damn thing on and have something short out. I'm afraid to tempt fate and lift the processor back out to check the pins. I know I set it in there perfectly, lined up pin1 markers, locked down the #1 bar first.. Like I said not my first build, just my first experience with all those pins on the board instead of the processor.

    Somebody out there reassure me and tell me these things make a bit of a racket when you lock 'em down before I power this monster up?

    Pick out the cpu again, and have a closer look, with a magnifier

    Dont understand fully..

    did u install the cpu, with the knowledge that the pin's was messed up?

    Hey Grotts- absolutely not... Sorry if that wasn't too clear. Don't post on forums often.

    The pins were all perfect, everything was going flawlessly. Processor sat in there nice and even. Maybe "crunching" was a little too powerful a word.. Maybe more like a squeaky door that needs to be oiled, or a scraping sound? I'm hoping I'm just not used to the sound of the lock bar twisting on the metal plate that covers the processor when you lock it in?

    I'd hate to lift that processor and risk it again, if I'm only being paranoid. Don't want to go picking a scab on a little cut and have it turn into a big infection, you know?

    You are lining up the little gold arrow on the CPU to the correct corner of the socket? The CPU should just drop in. No pressure at all.

    Sorry. Reread your post and you did it right. I'm new too the forum too and can't figure out how to cancel this reply.

    The hold down for the current generation of CPUs is rather firm IMO. As long as the CPU drops in and aligns easily then I wouldn't worry about having to apply more pressure than you're used to in order to bring the bar down.

    I distinctly recall mine making a similar 'squishing' noise when I engaged the clips. No issues 4+mo later.

    Well uhh.... did you install a thermal paste for your CPU? lol That does rather make a squishy sound... >,>; Yeah I'm a first time builder myself and I just simply dropped it down and closed the lever and lock and load and pops out the black plastic...

    The plastic confirms that you did it correctly.. Yeah I installed it a month ago and I installed the OS then when I installed the GPU drivers it went black screen.... Sorry I didn't mean to scare yeah if this happens... >,<;
