    New monitor help

Hey guys, so im moving on Sunday and will be getting a new desk, figured i might as well get a couple new monitors while im at it, just cant settle on which one i want. Ive always had Samsung, love them, so thats who im mainly looking at. Aiming for 27", however there are many variations on them.....

Currently im debating between these models:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001431 Model# P2770FH
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001553 Model# S27B550V

The first one is listed on their site as a "business" monitor, will that be bad then for gaming? i do a ton of BF3/CoD/SC2/tv/movies/etc.....

the 550 series sounds nicer to me, but would really appreciate some input Thanks!

The main difference for the price is the LED backlight. LED tends to be better because it is lower in power and they can selectively turn off parts of the backlight to get deeper blacks. Otherwise they seem very similar. GTG ratings are not 100% reliable as they can be measured slightly differently but both seem to be pretty fast which would mean good for gaming.

Another thing to consider is whether you want 120Hz and/or 3D.

Looking at one of those, $900 for a 27" or 1300 for a 30, whats so good about a IPS? Is it better then LED? its 6ms too, which is lower then the samsungs, wouldnt that be bad for gaming?

IPS is a type of LCD. The most common type is TN. TN are known for being cheap & fast but the color representation is not as good. IPS have a better picture than TN but they are a bit slower and more expensive. 6ms really isn't bad but I'm sure self proclaimed pro gamers would sacrifice quality for speed.

A high quality TN panel is good enough for most people. You probably wouldn't notice unless you are doing a calibration or sitting next to an IPS panel. The human brain is pretty good at translating the limited color gamut of TN. But as with many other things, if you can afford IPS they are nice to have.

60Hz monitors are essentially capped at 60FPS. They don't refresh any faster so even if you have a higher FPS being rendered, it's only displayed at 60FPS. A 120Hz monitor can display up to 120FPS. Some people claim it makes a difference in their gaming. Note for comparison that movies are 24FPS so this would only [increase frames] with gaming.

I agree with everything you said, up to the last sentence.

120 Hz (or a multiple, like 240 Hz) can be a win for movies, precisely because (most) movies are shot at 24 FPS. The reason is because 120 can be evenly divided by 24, whereas 60 cannot. This leads to a redraw phenomenon when displayed at 60 Hz called "pulldown judder". The Frame Rate portion of the Wikipedia article talks about various framerate issues when converting 24 frames into signals that refresh at other rates.

Note that 120 Hz is no panacea; there are other types of judder that actually may become even more visible when the original frame rate is a perfect divisor of the display refresh, but most videophiles want their displays to be some even multiple of 24 fps. That's why 120 Hz (and now 240 Hz) TVs are so popular. Note that 120 Hz is also an perfect multiple of the US television broadcast frequency (30 Hz).

At the sizes the OP is talking about, judder shouldn't be a big deal, but there is actually a real reason why 120 Hz and multiples of that are popular for displays.

I'll second that. A few revisions of a few of the sizes (like the U2410) have had some issues, but generally the Dell Ultrasharp monitors are very good for gaming and other stuff. I have the older U2408WFP and it's fantastic, though mine has developed the dreaded magenta line issue. I got quite a few years out of it and when the line isn't there, it's still the nicest display I've used.

My next monitor will almost certainly be the U2711, but I need to finish my new comp build first!

One other thing for the OP to consider: 16:10 or 16:9.

Ah, good point. I was focused on framerate so I hadn't thought of that.
