G73SW w/2960xm turbo not working

Hello guys i have a G73SW-A1 with 2960xm and turbo doesnt seem to be working. It would be nice if i could get it to work. Do any of you guys got any ideas on how i can get it working? any help would be greatly appreciated

Intel's Turbo relies on the OS being able to communicate hardware temperatures to the cpu, which it does with the thermal management component (subsystem) of ACPI (acpi_thermal driver).

However, its likely that ACPI is working fine and that the addition of the high-end XM chip to your system has probably increased the temperatures of various sensors in and around the CPU, since its a 55W TDP chip (not the usual 45W of the mainstream QM series chips). It won't turbo likely because ACPI reports that the hardware is already at the high end of its thermal envelope (turbo only overclocks the chip when there is "thermal headroom" to spare). Try running your G73 in a cold room (open the window in winter) or even a walk-in refridgerator and see if it turboes then: if it does then 55W TDP is simply too much for the G73's cooling system to expect it to overclock routinely at room temperature.

oh ok so if i downgrade to a 2860qm turbo should work then right? since its 45W chip

I would suspect so, but before you do you should check out your version of ACPI Thermal management in Windows and see if an update solves your troubles. I experienced the same problem when I got my G74 and put Linux on it (core i7 2630QM stuck at 2 GHz); switched to a newer kernel with a more up to date version of ACPI and it turboes properly up to 2.9GHz, in fact beating Windows (which for some reason only allows the CPU up to 2.7-2.8GHz).

Are you sure its not turboing? I.e. have you run a single core stress test like Prime95 and checked your frequency with cpu-z or something?
