    Talking Help OC New Build RIVE + i7 3820 + CMZ16GX3M4X1866C9R

Hi, as the title states, I would like to see if someone can help me OC my CPU and RAM.

With XMP profile I get 3,8GHZ processor and DDR3@1866MHZ and when I check voltage it's 1.21v in CPUz
I have now OCed my CPU till 4092MGHz and everything seems running fine after an hour of Prime95.
CPU Stress Temps go up to 67ēC with a Corsair H100 for CPU.
I would like to get around 4,2GHz and OC my ram IF possible to over 2100MHz.
Last time I tried my system wouldn't boot with those settings.
I tried little by little with no success yet!

Does anybody hava a similar setup that can give me some good advice or show me how your settings look like?

    Intel CPU i7 3820
Asus Rampage IV Extreme Bios v.1305
    Gigabyte Nvidia GTX680
    Ram Corsair CMZ16GX3M4X1866C9R
    CPU Cooler Corsair H100
    OCZ Vertex 4 SATA3 Firmware 1.4
    Power supply Club 3D 850W

    Any help would be apreciated!

I have never tried overclocking my RAM....I suppose I should have a go one day. I dont know how far you can push that kit. Maybe someone will reply who is knowledgeable on that score. The CPU should be an easy overclock though. The 3820 can be multiplier overclocked up to 43x and 4.2 GHz should be as easy as setting by all core multiplier to 42...on auto everything else it should boot fine and the volts wont be too high.

RAM will be more complicated with timings and voltages...

    Welcome to the ROG forum!

With CPU at 3.8GHz your temps are getting close to the upper limit... I wouldn't run that CPU any higher than 70-75C for long period of times...

That said, if you want to go higher with your memory frequency, perhaps, you will need to raise the voltage. If I would be you, I would try to go up to 1.6-1.65V. Just don't forget to keep one eye on the temps!

Unfortunately, Corsair's Vengeance family of RAM is not as good overclocker as the Dominator family is...

You could try memory stability with Memtest too, even before you would go into OS - just mentioning because it could make the process faster if you don't have to wait for the OS to load...

Ok, sorry for my mistake, I meant to say 2000MHZ for the RAM and sure my temps were high because an hour after posting I had a look at my H100 since I started to get conscious about those high temps too after checking other peoples temps in this forum with that CPU and made sure my heatsink was seated properly and as stupid it might sound, it wasn't sitting well on the cpu since the bracket they sent me (stock with the H100) was actually not for socket 2011 but now with some pressure (force) it is totally fixed and seems to be well mounted. At least I think so since playing Batman Arkham City all on ultra settings, temps don't go above 46ēC after 4 hours of gaming. Haven't tried Prime yet but before in Batman it would go around 59ēC.
I have gotten my CPU at 4,4GHz for 2 days but my temps would rise too much and actually didn't find any benefit playing games. But I'll try 4,2GHz and everything else on AUTO as "Arne Saknussemm" said and see if it's stable and not too hot.

It seems that every time I try to OC the RAM even with a tiny bit of more MHz to a bit higher frequency without touching timings (set to auto) it won't post or tell me OC FAILED.
My Ram I think it's v1.5 so you mean increase steps in v0.05 or increase in v0.10?

Thank you both for your replies! Awsome!

Did you tried to OC the graphic card? As I recall, today's games are using mostly CPU and GPU. Maybe, if you find the upper limit for the CPU, you could try tweaking the GPU to... I believe that actually you could get more feeling of improvement during the games if the GPU is set high, even if the CPU is not at it's max limits - but this is just an idea...

Yeah I OC'ed my RAM a bit but just around 60MHz and not in timings, and voltages are set to auto but I will try and oc this ram better later on. Need time!! I downloaded EVGA precision X for OC'ing my GPU and managed to overclock it a bit too since I don't have time to test it with prime or other stressing software yet..the only time I have left during the day and week (an hour or so) I spare it for gaming thats my only proof now If the OC went OK or not but it is not testing so that's why I'm not pushing it more right now. Maybe in the weekend I'll do some more OC with Prime95 and other software as testing tools but it takes so long to get it perfect!

    Thanks for your interest!
