Push Pull Rad For Water Cooling?

I am setting up my first water cooling system this weekend (excited) and have a quick question.

I plan to install the Rad on the outside of the case using a Koolance extend bracket: koolance.jpg

The rad will then be able to accommodate 5 fans. Should I use a push/pull configuration? Obviously I will be unable to cool the VRM as the bracket is attached to the exhaust fan grill. I do however have three 120mm fans on the top of the case to do just that.

I am thinking that without the room to place the rad inside the case I will actually be able to make up a degree or two in overall cooling. I have 5 Cougar vortex fans to attach to to the rad. Ultimately what I am getting at is should I have the air blowing away from my PC or towards it? Sounds stupid I guess, but I will now be without an exhaust fan...

    TIA

I guess away from the case will pull some air out of the case, even if it's a small amount. Cant you get a 140 mm fan on the inside as exhaust? I see empty screw holes there.....

However air blowing at the case might cool the metal of the case and suck heat out of the interior that way.

Are you mounting a 360 with 3 fans on the outside and 2 on the inside...is that the idea.....does the bracket not allow a third fan on the inside?

I would probably put the top and bottom fans push pull blowing at the case....put a fan on the inside of the case exhausting at the radiator and a fan on the middle of the radiator blowing away from the case....

I am not sure I will be able to replace my exhaust fan (I am unsure if the mount will allow room for the other scres holes). I do Have fans blowing towards the exhaust which do, of course, blow hot air outside of the case. This is what concerns me the most. Obviously not having that exhaust fan.

It is a 360. I was going going to put three fans in front and two in back (the bracket uses the middle fan mount), so, yes this is the idea. This I figured would provide a decent push/pull. German engineered fans are the key!

Okay, from your educated opinion the inside fans so be pushing towards the case. Interesting, I did not think of that at all. So I will give that a try. Not using the push/pull with the radiator. I am hoping to lose a couple of degrees using the radiator outside of the case. That seems to be many people's experience. Or so they say. My Cosmos II is all steel and gets so hot. Great case but I would not buy one again for overclocking.

Thanks a lot for the input!

If you look half way down this page there's a pic of one mounted outside a case with push pull on a 480.

I see what you mean...where you attach the rad you miss a fan but as you can see if your case has holes at the exhaust for 120 and 140 mm fans you can attach the bracket on the 120mm holes and have a 140mm fan on the inside exhausting. You could then put a fan on the opposite side of the Rad pulling air through it out into the room. Then on the top and bottom you could do the reverse....push pull from the room blowing on the case! This if you don't extend the bracket. If you extend the bracket I would blow everything out to the room.

The Koolance extension bracket allows to put a fan there too. Just check the last picture in my post #18 (http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread...ginnings/page2).

There you go! Don't even have to miss that middle fan!

Holy cow. I Can't believe it. I can also put an exhaust fan in as well. Nice bracket. Glad I bought it. Will be here this afternoon.

How were your temps with the rad outside of the case Zka?

    Thanks guys!

Well, Gnarly, if you read carefully that thread, you will realize that there were 3 GTX 480s built in... Those are one of the most power hungry graphic cards, with the consequent high temps. That was the reason to have a triple radiator setup - and those big rads would definitely not fit into the Corsair 800d.

Practically, only the graphic cards were attempted to be OC'd since a full (CPU+RAM+GPUs) OC would overwhelmed the PSU... LOL...

At stock settings (don't forget, the GTX 480s are factory OC'd already) the delta T (difference between the system temps and room temp) was 3-4C at idle, maximums went up to seventies with max OC the PSU could handle.

I have to tell you though, the noise was infernal near that built! Like an helicopter in your room... That's the main reason I took it apart and changing the fans into Cougars.

Yes. I am using Cougars as well. I have four 7970's they are not quite that hot until you add them up. I used to have Geforce 590's which were much more hot but no matter what VGA cards are going to heat up my steel case regardless of what I have going on in there.

Well, that depends on how you're cooling them... With a full waterblock on them, you should be able to get most of the heat away... and with an external radiator, it won't heat up the "steel"

BTW, how many radiators are in your system?
