    Exclamation Holy MotherBoards Batman!!!

OK so I am attempting to complete a wishlist that will be my next PC. I only play 2-3 games max and BF3 will be the primary game I play. I am looking for a system board and its been a while since I bought one. To say I am confused is a bit of an understatement.

    X58, X79? AHHHH!!!

I will be definitely choosing the i7 as the CPU and will have 16 gb ram etc etc etc but the choice of system board is not so simple.

    Do I really need x79?

Any suggestions on a board are appreciated as I cant make heads or tales so far

I’ve never built a system before and some would say that my build (see signature) is over kill.

However, I figure I work hard for my money, don’t really know how to OC or tweak things yet and so I want to minimize tweaking to start out, and I will need help wiring and setting Bios this Sat.

So after spending many hours researching the newest stuff out there, I came up with my system…don’t need to carry a wallet anymore…LOL, but that’s ok cause I’ll be setting on my rear where it used to be anyway, playing BF3 and other favorite games.

I didn’t really start out with a “budget” I just saved my pennies for a very long time and decided it was time to “DO IT”. I bought a couple of thing here, then a couple of things there…after I tallied it all up I had a cardiac arrest, but I’m fine now…LOL

I like the Rampage IV Extreme for a lot of reasons, the reviews show it to be very easy to OC than other MOBO’s and it’s big enough to put big things on it, the CPU Cooler fits in the case and is water cooled for the unlocked 3930K, the large fans in the case and the one 200mm I added to the top will blow the doors off the case hinges…LOL, the AX1200 will power a second card later down the road, and the memory is made for OCing too.

I do not see having to upgrade any parts for a very long time. That’s a good thing since I’ll be paying for my ambulance ride to the hospital for a while…LOL.

As stated before: you do need to set up a budget for us to help you! It would be silly to suggest the Rampage IV Extreme if you can not afford it...

    NEED an i7?

OK so try this on for size:

    i7 3770K
8GB memory (4GBx2) this gives 2x slots for upgrading later. Most people survive on 8 unless you're doing serious heavy lifting.
Maximus V GENE (affordable, good OC headroom)
ASUS GTX 670 DirectCU II (more affordable than 680 but still tons of power)
650W PSU (personally I prefer Seasonic or Corsair, but there are many good 80Plus Gold's out there)

What is your situation for CPU cooler, case, proper monitor, sound card, mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse?

Needs and wants are two diiferent things. Do you need X79 and i7 and 16gb of ram? probly not. Do you want them? that is a different story. Sure you do. So go ahead and get them. If you have the bucks and that is what you "want" why not. You ony live once my friend might as well have fun while you can.

    Z77

If you want to get an i7, get the 3770k and the ASUS Maximus V Gene. It has the Z77 chipset. You can throw the best graphics card on it that you want. It already has superior sound processing on it so that shouldnt be an issue. It has 4 RAM slots so if you REALLY need 16GB of ram, get 4x4...8GB is suffice for almost anyone. grab a 650W+ PSU so that you have plenty of juice for all devices. The case is up to you, just make sure you'll have appropriate cooling IE Hydro cooling if you really are going to vamp up your CPU VIA OverClocking. The board provides for you preset safe OC's. And they made it incredibly easy by just having you click to your desire. If you dont OC Air cooling will be more than enough. Also, if you do get a SSD. Dont waste your money by getting a huge one. Get one that you can put your games and OS on. Get a 1TB 32/64 Cache 6GB/sec hard drive and youll be in great shape to do with whatever you want and save yourself money in the process.
