Memory help

Hi yall and thanks for taking the time to read my post. im new to the RoG forum but not new to computer builds. I recently just built another rig, specs are listed below, and i cant seem to get my mem up to speed. when i try to go for default speeds, 1866, i get bsod's after windows login screen. 1600 works just fine but whats the use of using 1866 when all you can get is 1600 right? anywho, anyhelp would be greatly appreciated. and thanks again for taking the time to read this. eagerly await your replys.


CPU: Amd FX-8150
MoBo: Asus Crosshair Formula V
GPU: gigabyte Radeon HD 7950
RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR3 1866 (4 x 4gb)
SSD: Corsair Force GT 120GB
PSU: Corsair HX850

You have to do the RAM settings manually, I havent found anything that works with the XMP settings.
I'm using G-Skill but I should imagine that its basically the same for the Corsair.

From memory, the first thing you have to do is up the voltage (take it off auto and if the corsair is the same as G-Skill, you need to set the voltage at 1.650 (check the specs on the RAM before doing this, the Corsair may not need as much?))
Then choose the speed in the drop down menu. Next you change the timings to what they are intended to be manually.

Have you OC'ed the CPU? are you intending to?

Because that is another thing to think about first, If you intend an OC on the CPU, do that before playing with the RAM, get the OC stable, then you can tweak the RAM.

For info, my system can be run stable @ 4.2ghz CPU and 1930mhz RAM with a 1100T on a CHV (the RAM is PC-17000, 2133mhz, but the Phenom doesn't seem to like those speeds lol)

Just mentioning that the FX8150 may not handle such high memory frequency... It was built for 1333MHz...

The Memory speed is 9-9-9-24 with 1.65v. in my bios it has it at 1.5 so i "should" just be able to bumb the volts and it be fine? And i wasnt aware that the 8150 was built for 1333. Would there be any point in oc'ing? i was planning on doing a custom water cooling loop: ram, cpu, motherboard and 2 cards. ive read that these things can go as high as 5ghz on water stable. My question is would there be a noticeable speed difference going from 1866 to 1333?

Sorry, mate, "it was built for 1333MHz" - I did messed up there... my bad...

As you can see on the manufacturer's site (http://www.amd.com/us/products/deskt...omparison.aspx), the FX series CPUs should support "up to DDR3 1866" - with the note: "1866 supported with 1 DPC (DIMM per Channel) in single memory slot motherboard designs"

Sincerely, I don't think if you would notice the difference between 1333MHZ and 1866MHZ in every day use... What you could observe, are the timings of the memory... But even that would be more observable at benchmarks...

Quite the bummer i did not know this beforehand. guess i didnt do enough research. Thanks for the info on oc'ing, i will be water cooling and ultimately oc as soon as i can afford the rest of the loop. hopefully within the next week or so.
