    USB Transfer Speed

    Hi,
    I don't know if i Posted this in the right forum, but...
    For some reason my computer's USB transfer speeds are ABSURDLY slow. Like, 60 -120 KB/second slow... It took my PC 15 minutes to transfer 121 MB!

    My system specs are in my signature.
    Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    4Strings

    What was connected to the USB port? If it was a proprietary device (such as a phone/pda rather than a thumb drive) it might be in serial mode which is limited to emulating the speed of old serial ports.

    Have you tried different ports such as front & rear header ports as well as trying different USB devices?

    @xeromist

    I was trying to transfer 2 videos (totaling 121MB) on to a thumb drive (a Kingston 8GB DataTraveler 2.0). I tried to connect it to a different port and there was no difference. I also tried reformatting the 8GB Kingston, and to use a generic 1GB thumb drive without any improvements.

    You could check the USB settings in BIOS... chapter 4.4.7 "USB configuration", page 4-27 in the manual... specially the USB 2.0 Controller Mode (HiSpeed: 480MBPS vs FullSpeed: 12 MBPS)...

    Additionally, it worth to check if your antivirus software is scanning the USB device in the same time as you try to copy from/on it... I use to forget this one... (first scan it/disable scanning, then copy)

    @Zka17
    Thanks for the info!
    Firstly, I'm pretty sure that my anti-virus isn't scanning the drive. I'm using the Symantec Endpoint Protection (Version 11) that I got from my Dad's job, and I don't think it scans connected devices. If you know a way to check if it does scan, please let me know how to adjust that setting.
    Secondly, I don't have a manual for my motherboard... :P I never received one from alienware when I bought this computer... :P Would I be able to find the manual on the Asus website???

    Thanks again,

    I'm not familiar with this software... sorry, have no idea about it's settings... In those I used in my life (Norton and McAfee) was able to set up if I want to have the external drives scanned automatically - hence my idea for you.

    Regarding the mobo's manual, you can download it here: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD...luxe/#overview
    Go to the "Download" section and follow the instructions!

    UPDATE:
    I checked the BIOS. and the USB setting was on "Hi Speed" as opposed to "Full Speed". And yet I still get ~70 KB/second...
