ive downloaded throttle stop 4.10 and it says up the top

intel core i7-2920XM Extreme
25.00 x 99.78 mhz = 2494 mhz

2.5 GHz is the default core speed for the 2920XM. The key to remember is that the 2920XM (all XM for that matter) are extreme mobile chips, and so have a higher thermal design power (TDP) of 55 Watts, as opposed to the standard 45 quad-core processors. This extra 10 Watts may not sound like much, but it is ~20% increase in heat that the system has to dissipate. TurobBoost only kicks in when there is both power and heat headroom to spare. Likely, your CPU has used up all that headroom just running at stock speeds--which is still fast--and so cannot Turbo. Try running in the quiet office profile to minimize the heat and see if the TurboBoost monitor gadget ever reports a CPU frequency increase.

Have you tried running a single threaded application?

Good question, I was assuming that he knew that 5+ thread applications lock the CPU to the lower turbo, though with temperature headroom, it will still turbo. The pattern is 1/2/4/8 cores (including HT'ing ones) active.

Run in office mode running BF3 and diablo 3 at once never budged off 2.5

---------

how do i get my cpu to run in ssingle threaded application?

hrmm i thort this would turbo even if it was minor...
is there a way to manualy override and overclock CPU to what it should be running?

also i thort this was comon upgrade for this lappy is there anyone else running a G74sx with 2920xm???

Running two games at once will force it to run without Turbo. Try running the Windows Experience Index, that has some single-threaded components. If that doesn't budge, then the 55 Watt CPU has no thermal headroom, and you are stuck without Turbo. Still, 2.5 GHz CPU is very fast, especially considering the number of cores. Why are you worried, the system is still faster than most desktops...a 2630QM (2.0 GHz) is nominally equivalent to an i7-920, so a 2920XM should best at least the i7-960.

Hello guys,

I'm replying to this thread because I have the same problem: an ASUS G74SX with a 2920XM.
PANNNIC, do you have resolved the problem? For me it's impossible to go higher than 2.5GHz even when I tried what was previously said (single threaded application, quiet office mode...)

Is the solution will be buying a new AC power supply? Like a 180W one used for G75 laptops? (connector is the same as used for G74SX: 2,5mm x 5,0mm)

It might, the other issue at stake is cooling. Try to determine your CPU core temps. If they are high, the system will never turbo boost...period. It is a physical limitation that Intel put in to prevent damage to the chip. Hope this helps! Remember, the 2920XM is a 55 Watt CPU, as opposed to a 45 Watt like the 2720QM

So, what would be the best Cpu for the g74sx in your opinion at 45 watts? Is it the 2720qm? Thanks

Sounds about right! 🙂 ark.intel.com is a good resource to look through.
