    Crosshair Help Needed

HiVizMan - perhaps your magic PC charms will coax my CHV out of sleep as well?

I have had the same issue for as long as I have had my CHV - my pc will go to sleep (front led light blinks) but the water pump / lights / power supply remain on. I can't wake the unit with mouse or keyboard. There are actually two states I think. The first which allows the monitor to sleep, and wakes with mouse or keyboard if activated within a certain amount of time (no blinking led), and the longer period sleep which will not wake (blinking led).

I think the real issue is the power state not shutting down. I have actually experienced some random times when it did fully shut down, and woke, but I can't replicate it. Any advice for testing?

    Thanks,
    Ranger

Hey Ranger not seen you on the forum for a while mate, hope things are good for you.

Sleep states are so interlinked with memory you would just not believe. The slightest instability will cause havoc I have noticed.

Not sure your set of behaviours are exactly the same. But that is a good first step in sorting the wake problem I think.

Could you just refresh my memory as to how you have clocked your ram, and what the other settings in BIOS are that you have changed. Don't bother with the ones that are still on auto just those you altered. And of course your C states too.

If you have modified your power plan in OS I will need to know that too.

Also .. are you using a ps2 keyboard ? If not. Try it. (the usb is also asleep)

    Power Options:
I have sleep and hibernation disabled (Never)
Assign a sleep button on the (ps2) keyboard.
    Any key to wake.
    Best of Luck.c.

Ranger you are correct but it's not just two states it's actually 4 states,
    1) Monitor Power Down
    2) Add HD to Power Down
    3) Hibernation or low power state
    4) Power Off or as Asus calls it Soft Off.

State 3 Hibernation is what gives every one that's not on a laptop a Nightmare! it's not only linked to the RAM States like HiVizMan said but also to certain switches that are not present on a Desktop like the Switch that tells when the Lid is opened or closed or the sensor in the Synaptics Trackpad that tell if it's been touched.

I personally don't let my machine do anything other than state 4 Off and state 1) Monitor Sleep.

Thanks Team - I am going to work the logic side of the issue before I start reworking my ram profiles. Perhaps I can replicate what DeamonCantor noted and try to mitigate the faulting power states by omitting #2,3. I will post back soon.. thanks everyone!

This is what I now have configured: modified Balanced power plan

The first shows the system cooling policy - As I have a water block I presume I need to keep this active.. could that be requiring the power to stay on.. because I want it off when state 4 power down goes active.

    Power Options 1.jpg

The Sleep states have only sleep enabled - doesn't this prevent hibernation (state 4) or am I missing how the power off state vs hibernate functions?

    Power Options 3.jpg

USB and Power lid options now set to disabled and power down. I have a USB keyboard with sleep buttons I could use, but it also has a USB hub built in. I have modified the power settings in DevMan to allow the computer to shut down the device to save power

    Power Options 4.jpg

BTW - last BIOS change I made enabled EnP/S3 video resume. Should I revert to disabled?

Actually you want the USB to stay active because if you allow it to shut down any of the ports it will shut all down and your USB keyboard and Mouse might not reinitialize till you unplug them and replug them in which will cause a Driver Reset.

So just for clarrification here - the device that I marked in DevMan to allow to turn off are the USB hubs (there are 10 listed) that mirror the onboard USBs (Rog-Connect and front case USB ports). The fronts are where I have my Keyboard / mouse connected (mouse plugged into keyboard).

There is a generic USB Hub (below) for the keyboard's usb ports.. and the option to allow to wake is not available. None of the USB Root Hubs have that option available.. but again it is specified on the Mouse and Keyboard directly.

    keyboard_usb.jpg

I just don't know if I should uncheck all the other USB devices.. the rog-connect for instance could keep it active right?

I have seen a lot of problems with plugging Keyboards an Mice to external Hubs over my time so the best solution is directly in the machines Back Ports and do not set the Switches to allow them to power down... I've heard of people using External Hubs with Keyboards and Mice but they are rare and not many. The problem stems from the External Hub Draws it's power from the Onboard USB Port and in reality it lessens the amount of power left available to the Devices plugging in to that port. The few that I spoke about have Self Powered USB Hubs which are getting very hard to find anymore. They don't pull power from the system but instead use an Power Brick also these devices aren't affected by the Onboard Ports Powering Down since they are always powered and can Automatically Reinitialize when the Port is awakened.

I know a lot of info sorry about that it's just most people are not aware anymore of how USB's work due to the changes in Manufacturing. They are basically getting Cheaper with the Parts and not putting out the products the did a couple years ago.
