Are you sure the installer or iso the installer uses isn't corrupt? It looks like there's a folder designated for the iso itself. Is all that cool?

Beyond that, I have no idea what could be going wrong. Could you post the errors or problems you're getting?

Don't use wubi, use a USB key installer...follow the instructions on the website about how to create the USB boot image. It works better and it is safer. Anyway, why use Ubuntu, it is buggy and unreliable...Fedora is good, as is LINUX Mint (I've heard).

i never tried wubi. i use this to create usb boot disk http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/

normally i will create the boot disk with a Live CD from Ubuntu. i then create a persistence file (max. 4GB) to store additional drivers (e.g. nvidia), too (afaik this persistence feature is available for Debian and Ubuntu). the good thing of using persistence is that i can test run the OS first and pre-configure it, before i deploy.

for me most of the features works in Ubuntu, except for some that i can live with (e.g. keyboard back lid).

you might need to repartition your HDD/SSD to remove GPT and replace it with MBR first.

pendrivelinux is what I use when building the install image from Windows - great program!
Try this for backlight:
[user]$ su
Password:
[root]# cd /sys/class/leds/asus\:\:kbd_backlight
[root]# echo 3 > brightness

0,1,2,3 are the valid levels in increasing brightness on my machine.
Someone on the internet posted this, and I use it - thanks!

LINUX is a great OS - fast, reliable, moderately easy to use (depending on your distro). I like it.

I found the only way I could get backtrack or kubuntu to load is with nomodeset in the boot options.

Once you get in and install the nvidia restricted drivers you can boot normally figure that we all need to get used to Linux with Windows 8 on the way.

@Zygomorphic ok will try that 😄

Thx for all for replies.

I tried that USB install, but i had only a 16G SD card, so i installed it on that. But after reboot a can't see the SD card as a boot option (it's not showing up when i press the ESC during boot, also it's not listed in the BIOS). What to do now?

Go to the store and buy a cheap 2 GB flash drive...it's all you need to install. Once Ubuntu is installed, you can download everything else from the net. You can even store files on the jump drive after creating the installer.
