    Water cooling Maximus V Gene

    Hello all,

I want to build a mini version of the famous L3P D3SK. I want to separate the power-supply, ssd, pump, radiator and reservoir from the main case and put it into a hidden case just like the L3P one.

However I also would like to get rid of fans in the main case; but I assume if I do I also need waterblocks for the MOSFETs, memory and Chipset? or do the passive cooling do its job? even when overclocked?

If I do need memory, MOSFET and Chipset cooling, are there any MOSFETs waterblocks around which are compatible with the V Gene? (like the IV gene?)

Thanks in advance for anwsering this nooby question!

Ok I found out on another forum that the MOSFET waterblocks for the Z68 works great on the Z77 version and (duh) when overclocking your voltage get higher, so yeah I can't passive cool them without fans. Noobish question googled beter. I also plan to buy a memory waterblock.

However the question remains with southbridge. It seems overkill to me since non of the devices connected to the southbridge is going to be overclocked. But it seems logical to me that it does need a small fan directed on it to cool it?

Modern SB do not do much work as compared to a few years ago. This is simply because the CPU does all those tasks now.

Most of the time you do not need any active cooling at all.

i have found that, with my pair of 7870's, gets very hot, sadly i see no place to run any tubes with both my cards installed, so a maximus IV southbridge block wont fit, EK and MIPS have mosfet blocks for the gene V tho.

sensor says 95c at times, like when gaming with vsync off or running occt-gpu.

Are your 7870s coolers blowing down onto the southbridge? Or are they watercooled/exhaust style coolers?
