DisplayPort to HDMI passive adapter on Maximus V Gene

I know there is a thread discussing a similar issue but it "degenerated" into discussing the issue of DP to DVI, rather than DP to HDMI on the MVG.

According to someone from ASUS, the HD4000 on the P8Z77-V PREMIUM works when using a passive DP to HDMI adapter:

Has anyone tried a passive DP to HDMI (not DVI) adapter this on the MVG?

    Cheers

I did. Didn't work for me. Picked up an active adapter, which is working.

However, even that didn't work 'till I cycled in and out of sleep mode (by accident). Was I surprised when my second monitor suddenly started working after a couple days staring at a black screen...

I saw your replies in the other thread and you appear to be stating that you bought a DP to DVI active adapter. I'm talking about DP to HDMI.

(I tried a passive DP to DVI adapter and it didn't work)

I wonder why in the world has ASUS put DP and HDMI on the V GENE instead of DVI + HDMI ... there are so few DP devices out there. It forces you to waste money on unnecessary adapters which don't bring them any income or benefits. Sounds like Apple but at least Apple forces you to buy more of *their* stuff.

It's a great board otherwise but I may just have to ditch it if I can't run a dual monitor setup off the board. I'm not wiling to pay so much extra for an active adapter. The V GENE is already an expensive board for a mATX.

I have both DP to DVI and DP to HDMI passive adapters (I have one monitor with HDMI inputs and another with DVI). Neither worked. I finally got an active adapter - DP to DVI - and that's working. It wasn't terribly expensive, although I was a bit disappointed as I have a Dell work laptop and its Display Port works fine with my passive adapters on either monitor. If a laptop can do it...

I agree, I wish they'd have included a DVI port instead. Display Port never really seemed to catch on with the PC. Maybe Thunderbolt will eventually become popular, once Intel begins including it as standard equipment. OTOH, DVI takes up a lot more physical space, which is at a premium on a mATX backplane, especially one festooned with USB ports.

Oh, and since it's a gaming board, I'm guessing Asus assumed most of us would be running with one or two dedicated graphics cards. Which I'll probably do at some point - just not in a hurry to shop for "the right" card right now.

There is plenty of space in the backplate of the MVG for a dvi, vga or a 2nd hdmi port. If you are to include two video ports then why make one such a hassle to become actually useful? There really is no excuse. ASUS should have either made the DP port DP++ compatible so passive adapters can work or use a vga or dvi port or a 2nd hdmi port instead.

Also, check out this thread: http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...MUS%20V%20GENE

Asus themselves are confusing users and giving out awkward and unhelpful answers. ASUS support needs to get their act together (I've heard quite a few horror stories about it). Planning features on a motherboard should really include more common sense ...

Not 100% on topic but related nonetheless: I bought a DisplayPort to VGA adapter for 3 GBP (probably $4 in the US) and it works fine. It can't be passive since VGA is analog so some DAC must be used inside, but the adapter is dirt cheap ...

I risked and also bought a passive DP to HDMI adapter and it didn't work.
