Which SSD choice should I go with?

Hi fellow ROGers,

I am contemplating upgrading the stock 750GB hard drive of my G46VW unit to a SSD. The minimum size I'm willing to install is 500 - 512 GB (256GB is a fair trade off for the increase in speed) and I've read that the Samsung SSD drives work pretty well (particularly the 840 series). Currently I am considering one out of the two following options (note that the prices displayed reflect those at the time of posting):

1. Samsung 840 Pro Series 2.5" 512GB SSD MZ-7PD512BW US$542.95 http://goo.gl/tKlJY

2. Samsung 840 Series 2.5" 500GB SSD MZ-7TD500BW US$369.99 http://goo.gl/gCC5n

Aside from the differences in price, size, read/write speeds, accompanying software and hardware (as outlined on Amazon), I'm really considering the second choice. Is this a worthy upgrade going with the second choice or should I shell out a bit more for the first choice? Or, is there a better option out there? In case anyone is wondering my budget for this upgrade is around US $400. Thanks for the input 🙂

The 830 series is quicker than the 840, but the 840 pro should be right up there, but at a higher cost.

The 830 series is quicker on write speed than the 840, and only a tiny bit slower on read, but the 840 pro should be right up there, but at a higher cost.

Thank you for the link TenBlade! The review is pretty good but the price of the Samsung 830 512GB SSD is a bit high at US$480 http://goo.gl/6RhxJ. I understand it performs a bit better than the 840 but price wise it's still a bit steep so I'm still keeping an eye on the 840.

Looks like you got lucky! 😄 But I need to ask, even though it is much faster than conventional hard drives, is the ssd size (256GB) enough for you? The reason I ask is because if I am going to replace the stock 750GB, I may as well get something large enough (256GB less isn't that much of a loss but 500GB+....I'd rather have that internally and still use my 1TB external) 🙂

Well I use the SSD for OS and Programs C: 130 GB 😧 80 GB I have 25 GB formatted. MY C: has 85 GB free space, My 😧 drive has 47 GB Free space currently. I guess if I could afford a 500 GB SSD I might have or will install one. I don't feel that I am missing out on anything the way I'm set. My 750 GB is less than 20% filled I have some of my programs installed on one of the partition on it, programs that I don't use often or don't require fast load up times. This is just me you'll set yours as it will work best for you.
