ASUS G74SX, windows explorer has stopped working

Retired
Not applicable
I literally got the notebook 2 hours ago, suddenly i get the error message mentioned in the title, and I have the option to restard it, or look for solutions on the internet. It is quite redicilous that I should have a problem like this when the computer is brand new. whenever i open ANYTHING that has to do with windows exporer, i get the error message and everything just shuts down and i am back at my desktop...

My OS is on the 160gb ssd. omfg this makes me really pissed-.-

Have you restarted the machine? Installed anything since you got it? Also, just to clarify this is Windows Explorer and not Internet Explorer that is having the problem, right?

Omg, yes. it's windows explorer. I've restarted it a couple of times now tbh. To install new updates. I installed steam and cod4. I uninstalled windows live essentials and those free games that came preinstalled with it. Details of the error:

it's in norwegian but in same order as it would say it in english. I'm a complete noob when it comes to computers but i think it has something to do with the ASUSWSSHellExt64.dll file or something. the problem is if i even try to open any files, it gets the "windows explorer has stopped working" error instantly.

Also, I went into cmd and did the Sfx /scannow (i think that was what it was called, or maybe it was Sfc /scannow) and it said that there was something wrong, but that the system couldnt fix it..

I waited 3 weeks for it to come in the mail, and when i finally get it, its completely #$%&'ed up. how do you do it asus?

1) Take a look at this Microsoft KB article (http://blogs.technet.com/b/yongrhee/archive/2011/12/17/list-of-explorer-shell-related-hotfixes-post-...) and see if you've installed these post-SP1 updates related to Explorer.exe.

2) ASUS WebStorage has been implicated in Explorer.exe crashes. If you wish to try and keep it rather than uninstall it, launch MSCONFIG.EXE, go to the "Startup" tab, and UNCHECK the ASUS WebStorage checkbox to prevent it from running at startup. If this fails, then Uninstall it.

I have my G74sx for about 3 months during this time I have restored the system on at least 5 or 6 occasions on the advice of the vendor I purchased it from. I finally isolated the problem to Microsoft Automatic Updates and the Asus Live Update Bios Upgrade for Versions V1.0.21 and V2.31.1. By not performing these updates the system appeared stable, at least until a week ago when the above Internet Explorer error appeared. However the error is not confined to IE it also happens when I open Skype, Acrobat Reader and Microstation (a CAD program).

The following errors are in the Event Log:

Does anyone please have a suggestion or solution to this issue. I feel this should not be happening to such a new computer.

ASUS WebStorage allows you to store files remotely on their servers via the internet (i.e. "the Cloud"). See https://www.asuswebstorage.com/navigate/features/ for details. Check the "ASUS" or "ASUS Utility"folder in the Start Menu to locate it on your system.

ASUS WebStorage has been implicated in EXPLORER.EXE crashes. I recommend launching MSCONFIG.EXE and unchecking its checkbox in the "Startup" tab - if it is listed there.

There are also a couple of Microsoft Updates that address EXPLORER.EXE crashing. I just installed one of them this morning - KB2640148. Google for the other one and check Windows Update to confirm they are installed on your system.

If you still have a problem with this issue, consider uninstalling ASUS WebStorage as recommended by @xeromist.
