Frequently hanging G550JK

Hi guys,

I have G550JK-CN156H and it frequently crashes.
For example if i try to play dota 2 on battery it might hang.
OR it could just hang while im using firefox.
The screen jus freezes and there is no response ie the cursor just disappears.
The only method of remedy is to press the power button and reboot the laptop.
I only saw the BSOD once which says some WATCHDOG VIOLATION error of some sort.
I wonder if anyone faces the same problem?
Could it be due to the fact i did an upgrade on the intel graphics driver that is not indicated on the manufacturer's side?
I know the current intel graphics driver is V10.18.10.3355.02 which is not the latest based on intels site.
i have a newer version downloaded from intels site, is this the reason for the BSOD?
No issues occur when i'm playing watch dogs which is really odd.
Anyone else facing the same issue?

not sure, but I would first start out by downgrading or reinstalling the intel graphics that is offered by asus. Maybe there is some kind of compatability? Not entirely sure, but that's where I would start

Like dblkk suggested, I'd probably revert to the original Intel graphics driver via Device Manager, then update it via the Asus support site corresponding to your particular laptop model.
Laptop: Asus G750JZ
OS: Win10

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the prompt replies 🙂
I will try it out as suggested

UPDATE: i realised on a few times the screen freezes with artefacts. I now suspect its a GPU failure/fault. Gonna use my warranty, kinda wierd for a new model but since its a display model i should have expected this. Thanks for all the reply folks!

I suggest you request for RMA as soon as possible.

Hi dgnbach1,

What is RMA?
I realised there was a conflict between firefox and windows 8 as well. Soo now im using google chrome instead, soo far soo good.

@Sil3nc328 Hi, RMA is basically Return Merchandise Authorization, A Return Merchandise Authorization or Return Material Authorization (RMA) is a transaction whereby the recipient of a product arranges to return defective goods to the supplier to have the product repaired or replaced or in order to receive a refund or credit for another product from the same retailer or corporation. In practice, an RMA is only issued after a series of tests.

The specifics vary between different retailers and industries, but in general the steps taken are similar. For this example we will use a hardware product:

Should the customer encounter a problem, they generally call a customer service phone number and get an "RMA number" or designation which is written on the bill of lading or other packaging. This is so that the supplier's own shipping and receiving department knows how to route the returned goods and is assured that the customer has talked to someone in customer service.
If there exists a defect in the product, the engineer on call will have to ascertain as to whether or not the hardware had suffered a CID (Customer Induced Damage). This is done to prevent the company from accepting losses on behalf of the supplier due to negligence from the retailer. The product then goes to the scanning vendor, who will try to repair the defect if it's a minor defect, and send it out again in another order that he gets. If both these tests fail, then the item is sent to the principal vendor for replacement, and the principal vendor will once again check whether there were any defects in the product or whether the product has been tampered with.
Finally, if all these tests fail and there is a confirmed production defect, the supplier replaces the material with another of the same (which is not defective), or he issues a credit note to the customer or retailer which may be exchanged for cash or another product, depending on individual store policy.
Generally, this is done with new goods that have been received DOA ("dead on arrival") or when they have become defective while still under warranty.

In some cases the retailer sends RMA forms and packing labels, sometimes even prearranged packaging for the return shipment. The labels may provide for the retailer to pay the shipping charges, e.g., by freepost.

Often, the term RMA is used by customers (usually as a verb) to refer to the physical act of shipping a defective product back to the vendor, ie. "I'll have to RMA that new system ASAP because it was DOA."

Theres a very good thread here which can help you more on support,
http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?34832-ASUS-Worldwide-RMA-Guide&country=&status=

Normally the above process takes place, however you should have a clear idea what an RMA is by now :), let us know how it works out for you.
Where to find latest Asus Rog G750/751 drivers?

Please use search in the forums, there might be alot of threads which have similar answers to what you are looking for!

Hi Kelusion,

Thanks for the detailed explaination
I wont be able to send it for warranty any time soon as my semester has already started and i need the laptop for using my design softwares.
I will try to run a memory diagnostic just to check if its a RAM failure or a VRAM failure, just to narrow down the cause.
Furthermore, it seems DOTA2 and Hearthstone hangs rather frequently, and i am unable to end the background processes of these programs from the task manager ie i get an 'access denied'. Restarting via the power options takes really long as well, hence the only solution is to manually press the power button to shut the computer down and then power it back on again.
I hope to keep this thread alive for other g550jks users who might be facing the same problem as me.
the WIFI has some issues as well, although i would leave it out until i narrow down that the cause is not the modem but the network card itself.

Sorry for reviving the post but ı have the same problem is there anyway to fix this or i should call customer service?
