general overclocking questions

1) Will overclocking, even when running at safe temperatures, shorten the life of that part (processor, motherboard, memory, and video card)

2) what will be the best way to overclock my fx-8150 to get the most out of it (I have a hydro h100 in a push-pull configuration)

3) I have 2x4 gb Mushkin Ridgeback 1600 memory, should I mess with lower timings, or higher clock speed?

Hi,

1) Lifetime expectations of processors are based upon current draw. It is possible to shorten the lifetime of a processor even if it is sitting on an ice-cold heatsink. Provided one does not go insane with voltages, overclocked CPUs generally last a sufficient time period for the end-user.

2) Not sure what you are asking about "best way". Easiest way is to increase the CPU multiplier ratio as far as possible and then increase the processor bus reference clock to obtain the desired frequency.

3) A combination of both is required for Bulldozer - tight and high if possible.

What I mean by best way is multiplier, bus speed, or combo of both?

For the ram, would I be better pushing 1600 or a little higher at cas7 or going to cas 9 and getting closer to 1950-2000.
