You need to start the windows 8/8.1 advanced start up options.

1. Hit power button
2. Very quickly spam the f9 key (as soon as you hit power)
(you should enter advanced start up options, if all is well)
3. Click "trouble Shooting"
4. Click "Advanced Options"
5. Click "System Restore" (note most times the "start up repair" option will not fix a bad update process)
6. Click on the first restore point before the resent update.
7. Click next, then restart pc.

Hopefully that will get you up, and running again.
PS: Note if the "System Restore" option doesn't work, run this procedure again, but run "Start Up Repair" at step 5.

bernardosg, I have been seeing a number of reports of this happening recently, and this is Microsoft's fix for their recent bad Windows Updates:

MS14-045: Description of the security update for kernel-mode drivers: August 12, 2014
https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2982791/en-us

Mitigation

...process for how to get into safe mode to uninstall updates/ repair...

Please come back and let us know how it goes, and how you eventually fixed it.
