First time build, advice wanted.

Hi, as the title states I'd like some advice for my first build. I'll be buying the parts slowly over the next few months. Starting with those least likely to change/improve like the case/monitor. So if I should for things to be released/updated please say

I know a fair bit but, for all intents and purposes, assume that I don't know anythin 😉

Budget: £2k max. preferably <£1500
Main uses of intended build: Gaming!....and more gaming!!
Parts required: Everything!
Previous build information: nothing 😞
Monitor resolution: 1920x1080 is fine, higher would be nice
Storage requirements: SSD >=250 HDD I'm thinking 2TB
Overclocking?: No, tho having the potential would be nice

Extra info:

Spent some time searching and come up with this:

Case: NZXT Phantom 820
Motherboard: Asus MAXIMUS VII Ranger
CPU: i7-4790/4790k
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12S
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x8GB (DDR3 1600)
Storage: Samsung 840 Evo 250GB SSD && 2x WD Caviar Blue 1TB HDD
GPU: ASUS GTX 980
PSU: Seasonic 660W 80+ Platinum
Monitor: ASUS VG248QE (24" 1920 x 1080 1ms)

Any problems with this so far?

is there much benefit to the xxxxK versions of intel processors or is it literally only for overclocking? If so is it much of an improvement?

Last few notes:

980 much better than 780 or barely noticeable.

I'd like a bit of a bigger monitor like a 27/29" but I notice the response times a tad slower for most(like 5ms vs 1/2ms)
Will that actually cause any noticeable issues?

Cooling will be via fans, tho I don't know how many I actually need
The case can be fit out as such:

Top: 2x 200mm (One included) or 2x 140mm or 3x 120mm
Front: 1x 200mm (Included)
Bottom: 2x 140mm or 2x 120mm
Rear: 1x 140mm (included) or 1x 120mm height adjustable
Side: 1x 200mm (included)
Pivot: 1x 140mm or 1x 120mm internal pivot fan

I was just going to use the biggest for each. Is that an unecessary amount?

Lastly I need a decent keyboard and headset.
No idea about keyboards, havent researched yet 😮

Used to have a Razer Chimaera
Nice headset (after I broke it in, hurt like a bitch for a while :p) worked perfectly for 2yrs getting knocked about the table. It finally dropped the 2.5 feet to the ground and broke :l.
So I'd like a good wireless headset, that can take a little tumble without dieing on me! I hear good things about Astros, any recommendations?

Any advice you can give is much appreciated!

well my five pence;

your build plan looks good to me, apart from too many fans..... (sorry I am firm believer in getting the right fans and making the airflow move efficiently and often I have seen adding more fans is counter productive. A good intake, and exhaust plus the CPU should suffice.

I have one intake, one exhaust and the two stock fans on the cooler (as intakes) all 140mm - idle temps about 10 above ambient and gaming at full load I can hover around 60 without increasing the fans from minimal or go a little lower but upping them and having a bit of noise.

The 980 is a bit better than the 78-; the big deal is that it uses a lot less power (and thus should use a bit less cooling and therefore noise).

monitor wise there a few 27" <3ms screens out there. cant comment on models as mine is a bit outdated now, have a read on several reviews is my only suggestion there.

Keyboard is tricky - its a personal thing - if you can; get to a good PC Store in person and try some 🙂

If you plan to do some serious overclocking, you should opt for closed loop WC.
The Corsair H100, 105, or 110 are popular choices.
And if you're into gaming, I would suggest a mechanical keyboard, like the Corsair K95.

I looked over your list, why not Windows 8.1?

I figured 8 was too a few too many heh, wanted to make sure thanks!
980 it is then!

Don't have any definite plans to overclock, maybe in the future when I'm more confident in what I'm doing.

Also I haven't thought much about OS, is there much of a performance boost for 8.1?
I have a spare copy of 7 lying around, but if it's worth it I may as well buy 8.1 lol

8.1 will run multi-threaded apps & games better than 7.

Will 8.1 handle 500/1000/2000 poll rates w/o problems? To the OP stick with win 7 pro/ultimate

Gonna stick with the U12S, its comes with spare parts if I ever decide to stick another fan on the heatsink, and performs pretty similar to the dh15. Not gonna try liquid coolers for this build.

The ROG SWIFT is a little pricey for a monitor atm, but I'll be keeping an eye on that thanks!:D

eloops seem pretty decent will compare with others 🙂

there isn't really much of a benefit beyond 1/2 frames. Tho i'll check prices, might aswell if there isnt much in it;)

veering towards 8.1, just because alot say its better, need to find some stats tho 😮

Other components look good, don't buy to many fans. 😉 Better to buy a few with low noise levels and good performance, such as Noiseblocker NB-eloops 😉

Look for a mechanical keyboard, I own a Logitech G710+ and I really like it and haven't had any problems so far. 🙂
