    Ramdisk time again ?

Anyone with a 60GB or larger SSD shouldn't worry about this, install Windows 7 to a SSD to take advantage of the SSD read/write speeds there.

Regardless of what i imagine SuperCache does, profiles, registry, temp files, etc. will touch the system volume at some point regardless of what you try and do.

Ramdisks, as this is really under the cover, were popular many years ago before SSD's, because of the speed you could get. Ramdisks are simply dangerous to most users who don't have a UPS because of the data loss which can happen on a power cut/loss.

The answer, Get an SSD larger than 60GB and don't worry about it, Look at the last board the Z68 and a feature called SRT that Intel plugged to business' hoping they would buy into multiple drives for boot times and putting temp files somewhere basically, really just buy a good quality SSD over 60GB and use it.

Thats my 2 pence, hope it helps.

Still tho for slower disks, and some types of data depending on software ramcache would still be beneficial. For ssds a chance of perhaps less writes, and for slower disks better overall performance in apps and games. But yeah ssd does kind of solve this already, nonetheless if ur sitting on a ton of unused ram, why not take the small performace boost?. But i may be wrong.

For slower mechanical disks, sure, if you have oddly loads of ram, go for it.

NO one should ever put the page file back into ram if this thing does, if it's not in use, you just loaded a however many GB file BACK into the MEMORY ? best let the OS choose.

The best use when i used then years ago was for SQL temps, sometimes i would show off rendering something in 3Dmax at uni over everyone else’s mechanical hdds etc.

Really i found them to be such a pain, you can back them up using rsync every few min, but if you have a crash before the backup you always lost something, be it a link from firefox or IE or something you might of wanted to go back too later.

Hey illuminati, great guide! I actually bought 32GB of RAM for my P9X79 Deluxe and a battery backup to do exactly what dlee asked. I plan on dedicating about 24GB solely for my OS and boot off of it. That's something you didn't talk about and I've only just begun my research. Do you have any info on how I can accomplish this? Obviously, I know I'd have to boot into another OS to form the bootable RAM drive, then switch over, and I have no issue with that.

    Thanks!

    Planned new rig (in progress):
    Xeon E5-2650
    P9X79 Deluxe
    8x4GB DDR3-1600
    ≈24GB RAM Drive (OS)
160GB Intel 320 (Applications & daily backup of RAM Drive)
    1.5kVA APC J35B UPS

    overclocking system

ive used RAMDisks for ages since DOS 5.0. but now with the advent of super-clocking CPU/MEM/GPU what kind of effects with some of these tipping hot over-clocks can effectively skew performance? like cranking XX voltage to memory to achive mem speeds and clocks. so we would want this to be priority to make the system super stable, then create the ramdisk?

SSD with RAM Cache on a P9X79 WS

    I am setting up a X79 Workstation

    P9X79 WS Motherboard
    XEON E5-2620 CPU
    32GB G.Skill ARES 1866 DDR3 RAM
    120GB Mushkin Enhanced Chronos SSD

Two (2) 3TB Seagate Barracudda 7200rpm Drives set up with RAID 1

I want to RAM Cache the 120GB SSD and boot off of it with Windows 7 64bit.

Which SATA6.0Gb ports should I install the SSD with the RAM Cache on? The X79 ports (White) SATA G1&G2 or the Marvell ports (Blue) SATA E1&2?

    Thanks

The Benchmarks on the left are without SuperCache 5 and the ones on the right are with it enabled.

You do want to turn off your Paging File or your Read Access time will suffer slightly.

I think it's also important to note that the Benchmarks I've posted are not representative of real world use. There is a very real performance boost but, it's certainly nothing earth-shattering like the benchmarks seem to suggest. When it comes to the speed/response of your OS the most important benchmark (Read/Acc. time) is the only one that doesn't change at all. That said, It still does make a difference and I think it's worth it. Of course that's me. If you want to see if you think it's worth it or not try the 10 day free trial.

If I understand you correctly you want to make the SSD your C drive for your OS and assign a RamCache to it.

If that's the case use the white (actually light gray) Intel X79 ports SATA G1&G2
