How many GPU's for 7680x1600 Resolution? Which Cards?

Hi,

I recently went a little crazy and bought three Dell U3011 monitors. I plan on an Eyefinity setup with a resolution of 7680x1600. I know it's crazy, but it must be attainable.

My system currently is:

SilverStone SST-ST1500 (1500W PSU)
ASUS Rampage III Formula
Intel Extreme i7 i975 Processor
RAM -> Looking for new Ram
Intel 510 series 250GB SSD
XFX HD6970

Does anyone have any input as to what I'll need to run that resolution for games? Two more 6970's, One 6990's, Two 6990's, Three 6990's? Any ideas?

I just ordered Water Cooling parts to Over Clock the CPU. I also have it in mind to Water block the GPU's but naturally I'd like to start scaling back on expenses.

Thanks for any input.

You want cards with lots of memory and then beyond that you should probably get as much oomph as you can reasonably afford. I don't know anyone gaming at that resolution but I'll guess 3x6970 or 2x6990 would be able to play most current games with acceptable settings.

Unfortunately, you cannot do three 6990's since they're already dual GPU cards. As said above lots of memory is key for a resolution that high, so 2 6990's would pretty much be the best bet, though if you can hold off for some time there have been quite a few rumors of the 7k series coming early this month.

Add one more 6970 2GB version. Would be enough for you.

Lots of VRAM required. I game at 5760x1200 across 3 24" screens. My 5870's struggled to keep up, especially in games like Metro and Stalker. Upgrading to dual 2GB 6970's helped, however another card would really help. I would suggest you would need at least 3 x 2GB cards, especially if you like cranking up the eye candy! (and who doesn't, especially when you run a higher end system!)

This! High VRAM is needed at that native res.

Does this help? http://rog.asus.com/48282011/guides/3-way-crossfirex-compared-on-rog-x79-z68-990fx-platforms/

I'd start off by trying to find reviews of eyefinity or large screen resolutions and see what cards they use. That'll give you an idea of where the ballpark is. Either that or just buy one 6970/50 2GB now, then drop in another if it feels slow. Remember when you CF (or SLI) though that the total VRAM is limited to the size of ONE card, not all added together.

Thanks for the tips. I have all three monitors now, but I have now decided to renovate my computer area. The house is torn apart, hopefully by the time I have the house back together the 7000 series cards will be out. If not, I am just going to use my existing 6970 until then.

Renovating is a pain, I haven't opened my monitors yet and don't plan to until I am finished. It might be awhile, I'll post back here when I do.
