Brand new G74 with new SSD/OS install?

Retired

Hello all,

I have been trying to search for a nice step by step procedure to install my OS onto the new SSD I bought.

The SSD is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227550

and the laptop is http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230100

I have not turned anything on yet and I have not installed the SSD quite yet. What I would like to accomplish is to have my whole OS installed onto the new SSD. I am not sure which programs come installed on the laptop and if they also should be moved to the new SSD or if they should be kept on the original HD. I would want to leave enough room on the SSD for WoW...

In addition I 'would like' (don't know if it's best or not) to perhaps, after getting the OS installed on the SSD, can I completely re-format the original HD or should I just leave it. Obviously I would leave it if there are programs that come pre-installed on the laptop that should not be moved to the SSD.

Basically I want a clean install of my OS onto the SSD and gain some information of what I should leave on the original HD if anything at all.

Please help and thanks for any advice or links to good instruction you could provide.

I recently did the same thing, it was relatively easy. I hit a few snags along the way, mainly with Windows 7, just make sure you download and burn the service pack 1 version ISO onto a CD. After you install your SSD (search for an online video and watch it first), make sure the BIOS sees and then you can just plop in the Windows 7 ISO CD boot to the CD and then go through the setup process to install it to your new drive, pretty easy.

It is also highly recommended that you get the important drivers (Chipset, Wireless Lan, Lan, Graphics, touchpad etc... and put them on a USB Flash drive for immediate install. I was also having some issues with the bluetooth and USB drives which was solved by inserting the CD that comes with the laptop and picking only the ones you want.

Here is my thread from last month:

Oh and after you install Windows on the SSD it will ask you which version you want to run (since you have two drives with windows installed) Select the one on the SSD. Once you get it all set up feel free to format your other drive, you won't need it.

ricksaint also told me about Activation Backup Restore, I used it and it really, really helped. I highly recommend using it, buy you need to read through the instructions and make sure you understand what you are doing before you do it.

Thanks MUCH! This will give me a bit more research to go on.

What exactly IS this Activation Backup Restore? Just a rough idea of what it does?

EDIT: Nevermind, the link from your other thread is working.

ABR makes a backup of your Activation code as it is seen by the system. It can also restore your activation without the possible phone call to MS that is sometimes required. I believe there's plenty of info on the ABR page.
Read the User's Manual for more info. 😄

I would recommend stepping up to a series 3 SSD and 120GB if you can swing it. My first SSD in my desktop was that exact SSD you selected and after installing a few maint programs, Win 7 Ultimate and Office 10 I had about 20 GB free....

I upgraded to the OCZ Solid 3 120GB for the G74sx boot drive, then I placed a 500GB Momentus Hybrid for my Data drive. Works awesome. Hoping to upgrade to the new seagate Sata3 6GBs 750GB Hybrid drive that just came out. Good Luck!

I wouldn't recommend a hybrid drive. Had one on my G73SW, and sure, the computer started almost as quickly as on a SSD, but everything else is just as slow as on a regular old HDD. Plus, with some firmware your computer will suffer hiccups. A hybrid drive only has about 4GB SSD memory. Not really worth it.

And if you're just using it as a data drive that SSD memory is pretty much pointless.
