[Solved] Can I use 1.35V ram for the Maximus IV Extreme P67 rev B3 board? (Yes)

I had a look in the manual, but I couldn't find any information that say, if I am required to use 1.5V ram or not.

Presumably, I could use 1.35V ram, but I would like to be sure, if anyone happen to know of any limitations.

I read a claim that some boards require 1.5V ram, but I have no idea if the Maximus IV Extreme P67 boards do.

Update: The bios I have seem to allow ram voltage values from 1.2-2.2V. It is also mentioned that 1.5V is "standard".
Looks like I can use 1.35V ram, but I would like to be sure.

Hello Decoman

Sure you can use ddr3 ram that's 1.35v but ram with that voltage is usually 1600MHz or lower, 1600MHz is fine but you might want something a little faster than that.

I'm not sure of your cpu and what speed it can comfortably handle.

I was thinking of getting 32GB of:
DDR3 12800 Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8-8-8-24 1.35v (for 1600MHz, was thinking of oc'ing to the max 2200GHz)
My cpu is an oc'ed i7 2700k @ 4.6GHz

My ram is currently running at 1600MHz only, so I thought it would be suitable to overclock the ram sticks in the future, now that my cpu has already been running at 4.6GHz for a few years.

From reading the forums elsewhere, I sort of got the impression that the cpu would run better if I could overclock the ram from the default values.

Btw, I am reading this, is the following statement from some webstie true?
"If you've already overclocked your CPU within an inch of its life, including the base clock, obviously there's no further boost you can give to memory frequency here."

Does that sort of mean that I have to consider clocking down my overclocked cpu, for startin gto overclock my ram sticks?

You don't need to lower your cpu overclock to overclock your ram but overclocking 1600MHz to 2200MHz might be asking a bit much. You could probably get it to 1800MHz+ but this will require raising the Dram voltage.

If you want faster ram just go with a 2133MHz kit, 16GB is plenty and will be for a good while yet.

I guess I should say something now that I have the new ram sticks installed.

It works with the 1.35V sticks and I have also been able to overclock the ram. With the ram set to 1.5V, I can at least get to 2133Mhz with relaxed timings. Currently trying out 10-10-10-27. Apparently, with too low timing values, the machine won't post.

Testing with SuperPi, I get something like a 2.5% increase in performance lol.

That's a very good overclock, nice job !

You can take it safely up to 1.65v which should get you to 2200MHz and maybe beyond.

On this particular motherboard, I believe the maximum setting is 2200MHz.

I'll try 2200MHz one of these days, once I get settled with my Win 7 that I reinstalled. 🙂

EDIT: OOps, apparently the next step beyond 2133MHz in the bios, is 2400MHz. Sry, my bad.

Hmm, it actually says "2200MHz" as maximum in my manual, but I swear it said 2400MHz in the bios. 😄

If the memory controller on your cpu can handle it you can go past 2200MHz, a bump in the vccsa voltage can help achieve this. The maximum speed my board supports is 2800MHz but I can get 8GB to 2900MHz.

the max speed is determined by the cpu-type, sandy goes to 2133, ivy up to 2800, his 2700K is a sandy, so the only way he will get 2200 is by a slight fsb overclock

fsb of 103.1 mhz will get 103.1 * (32/3) = 1099.73~ mhz dram = ddr2200
