Maximus Hero VIII PCIE slot stuck in x8

Any ideas what can be causing this my gfx card was running as x16 previously no idea why its stuck at x8 now. Also not using anything else in the long PCI slots.

i7 6700K
ASUS Maximus Hero VIII Bios 1302
EVGA GTX 970 FTW+
Samsung 950 Pro M.2 256Gb
ASUS XONAR D2X - PCIEX1_3

SATA_1&2 are empty SATA_3/4/5/6 are in use.

Any ideas?

It is installed in the top PCIe x16 slot, correct? If it is in the 2nd it will drop to x8 automatically.

It is in the top slot, also tested with the m.2 drive taken out and sound card same problem also reseated the cpu.

How are you verifying that it is operating in x8 only? in the bios or in Windows?

If you're using GPU-Z, make sure you click the render button. GPU sometimes downclock to save energy when not in use.

Try also verifying with GPU-z or AIDA64. If reseating doesn't help, try clearing cmos. Aside from that, there isn't much involvement from the motherboard. The PCIe controller is on the CPU. You would need to figure out if the problem is the CPU or GFX card. I would pull the card and test it in another system. If it works, replace the CPU next.

We are several on this forum reporting an incompatibility issue with some graphic cards but ASUS don't care...

Pity to face basic speed problems with premium hardwares...

Have You tried update bios or graphics card vbios ? Does it worK for Full speed running
