DVD RW drive does not see disks?

i JUST PURCHACED A g73H and the dvd drive acts as if there is nothing in it even when we put in dvds, cds, etc. The device manager says the HL-DT-T-ST DVDRAM GT32N drive is working and drivers are up to date. We have spent hours wih ASUS and we are just about to send it back. I get the feeling its a Windows 7 64bit issue. The dvd drive never worked. Any fixes befor we head of to FedEx? Thanks

Does that drive really need a special driver instead of the one that comes with Windows?

I've never heard of any Windows issues with generic drives like that, but I've seen many generic optical drives not work when new or fail shortly after - sometimes they stop reading DVDs but can read CDs, sometimes total fail.

They're a <$20 part so I never expect much 🙂

It's too bad Asus gives you the run-around and won't just cross-ship a new drive and be done with it. Dell would.

Go to the dDevice manager and try uninstalling the Optical drive and reinstalling it.
