Rampage IV Extreme - 8pin EPS12V ATX Connector Problem (Burn smell)

Hello guys, I already RMA'd the Mainboard I only want to share my experience while waiting for a replacement. I installed a 3930k on the RIVE cooled by a Noctua NH-D14, 3 DIMMs of DDR3-2000Mhz Corsair RAM (set to 1866Mhz by me), a Vertex 3 120GB with 2 HDD and one 6970 and a Corsair HX850W PSU. Everything was working fine and I installed WIN7 with no problem. Then I started Battlefield 3 and after a while I got a BSOD. Started the system again and got another BSOD, Then I smelled a burning smell from inside the case (a CM Storm Trooper) ! So I shut down everything and removed every component to check it out. Everything was fine and the smell came from the 8pin ATX Connector on the board with no sign of burning though. Then I checked the PSU Cable but there was no sign of burning, everything was normal. So I re-installed every component but the system did not boot. The mainboard was correctly powered (The Green led of the RAM was on) but the CPU LED was red. I tried to switch the 8pin ATX to the 4 pin but this changed nothing. Any ideas?

EDIT: I found a guy with the same problem http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...41&postcount=2

ive heard about this happening on this Mobo before seen some crossfire extreme IV boards go pop on that 8 pin aswell. if i was you i would be checking a 2nd psu if possible as some cant handle the R4E.

cant remember where i saw the picture its might even have been a ROG famula mobo but i 100% remember that the 8pin got hot which gaming and fused to the mobo and i was thinking holy **** hope i dont get that.

when i find the link i will post it.

also whats your hardware set up insode the PC ? psu gpu the full works

Thx for the reply spoony. I exclude a PSU problem, I have a Corsair HX850W Modular which is great, and was connected to a Rampage II Extreme before with an i7 920 @ 3.7Ghz and 1.376 Vcore stable and I had no issuea at all with the previous build.

    Anyway the hardware was this

    Rampage IV Extreme
    Core i7-3930K
    Noctua NH-D14
3x Corsair DIMMs in Triple channel set @ 1866Mhz (they are rated up to 2000Mhz @ 1.65V http://www.corsair.com/memory/intel-...m3a2000c9.html)
    1x OCZ Vertex 3 120
2x Western Digital Caviar Blue 320GB in RAID0
2x HD 6970 (but I installed only one card)
1x Asus Xonar DX Audio Card

Oh and I rebuilt my previous system using the same PSU and guess what? Everything is working fine and there are no issue at all on the 8pin ATX connector of the Rampage II Extreme.

Hey Riri - unfortunately it looks like you've got a bad MOSFET or it's been shorted. Please RMA the board.

Out of interest so I can feedback here, what PC spec do you have? Was it overclocked + what settings? What BIOS?

    Thanks!
