ASUS Radeon HD 7970 28nm Graphics Card Officially Launched

It may not be an ROG offering, but it's a monster. This is the new generation of graphics for PC, and likely the most significant boost to PC graphics in a few generations. The 28nm fabrication process of the "Tahiti" GPU with its Graphics Core Next architecture begins the parade of innovations here, bolstered by the might of 2048 stream processors and 4.3 billion transistors. That's a lot of numbers, and the processing power matches the fanfare, so expect DX11 to finally come of age (actually it's DX11.1 now). Of course, it comes as no surprise this is the world's first PCI Expres 3.0 card!

This card has 4K resolution written all over it, although I'm not sure the drivers are in full support of that - something for those of you with 4K panels to test out! The 3GB of GDDR5 (384-bit) should be able to handle resolutions much bigger than 1080p easily, though. For sure you can do six-screen Eyefinity now without any adapters, using triple DVI, dual DisplayPort, and one HDMI (1.4a).

ASUS is bundling the revamped GPU Tweak with this card, so check the video we had for the utility just a couple days ago. It will certainly prove very useful in harnessing the power of this giant!

And keep watching this space for news of possible ROG-flavored versions of the new generation. While for now we get the reference card from ASUS, we can tell you more are on the way as the AMD 7000 series is set to expand towards the spring.

Are you going to get one of these? Let us know in the forums!
