LCD vs. OLED: How do these panel types compare for esports? 

For years, esports monitors almost exclusively wielded TN panels. Built for pure speed, these monitors made stratospheric refresh rates possible, but they struggled to shake off the limitations of the tech: washed-out colors, shallow contrast, and poor viewing angles, to name a few.

OLED panels offer head-turning visual quality, so they appeal to gamers of all kinds. There’s some discussion online about the value of things like inky blacks, vibrant colors, and professional-grade color accuracy from the perspective of esports gaming. Will they make your games more fun to play? Almost certainly. Will they bump up your K/D ratio? Maybe not. But here’s a quality of OLED panels that offers an inarguable competitive edge for esports gaming: incredible motion clarity.  

We dive deep into this topic in another article if you’d like to know more, but here’s the short version. All modern monitors have to battle motion blur to a certain extent, thanks to two engineering challenges. The first is pixel transition speed. Pixels can’t instantly switch between two colors. During transition from one color to another, you see a temporary blended state that can appear blurry. Second is what we call “sample-and-hold,” or the way that modern monitors display each frame statically until the next one arrives, with no “break” between frames. This causes your eyes to track a series of static images that instantly shift from one point to the next. As a result, you’ll always perceive a certain amount of blur in this scenario, even if there’s nothing blurry in the images themselves. 

OLED gaming monitors tackle these concerns in two ways. First is a generational leap forward in pixel transition speeds. Compare the response times of an OLED gaming monitor with an LCD, and the OLED’s response time will be an order of magnitude faster, if not two. All by itself, this upgrade means minimized blur in fast-paced action.  

As for sample-and-hold, there are a variety of strategies out there for countering this concern, like backlight strobing. OLED gaming monitors, however, can address this source of motion blur through sheer overwhelming speed. Grab a top-of-the-line OLED monitor with a 720Hz refresh rate, play a game that your system can run fast enough to take advantage of that 720Hz refresh rate, and you’ll be hard-pressed to spot motion blur of any kind. 

All told, the motion clarity on offer with OLED panels is off the charts, and that’s what’s so exciting about them for esports. When the margin for victory depends on spotting, tracking, and responding to fast-moving opponents in impossibly small windows of time, you need every available weapon in your arsenal.

Series-wide upgrades for competitors

Professionals rely on carefully arranged setups, but don’t always have a lot of time to line everything up exactly in tournament conditions. Every ROG Ace OLED monitor includes integrated measurement scales on the tilt (-5°–+33°) and height (0–155mm) adjustments to help players consistently reproduce their preferred setup. The Quick OSD menu lets players easily tweak core settings before every game. Different games can call for different display settings, so we’re making it easy for pros to quickly dial things in. Three Esports Color modes provide tailored presets optimized for three different FPS gaming scenarios.  

There’s a key upgrade under the hood, too. Every ROG Ace OLED monitor incorporates Gallium Nitride Field-Effect Transistor (GaNFET) technology in its power-supply design. The elevated efficiency of GaNFET tech helps to optimize heat dissipation, delivering up to 35% less waste heat and a 10% lower vent temperature. That increased efficiency allowed us to optimize the displays for excellent brightness as well as a long-running product lifespan.
