FPS Caster Lauren Scott: The Top Five Teams Don’t Have an Order
Lauren ‘Pansy’ Scott is one of ESL TV’s main casters and an expert when it comes to CS:GO. We asked her about the current standings of the teams in the scene, as the ESL ESEA Pro League just concluded and the next major is nearing quickly. She gave us an insight into her top-rated teams and the players who managed to impress her recently. She also gave some advice on what players should look at when figuring out their perfect rig.
Which storylines are currently standing out for you in the CS:GO scene?
It’s hard to deny the current dominance of Fnatic. However, the best part of the CS:GO scene currently is that it’s anyone’s game within the top five. The next major will once again test if Fnatic can be challenged on the big stage. EnVyUs is never far behind, and TSM is also closing in on what Fnatic is achieving.
When looking at the current standings of the ESL ESEA Pro League, are you observing any trends you wouldn’t have expected beforehand?
For me it's still fairly early in the ESL ESEA Pro League, so I can't say whether there are too many trends in place as of yet. However, there have been some really promising performances from certain teams. Team Dignitas is definitely one of them, putting them among the top five. Outside of this, the one thing I love most about the Pro League is the fact you get to see head-to-heads with the best teams in the scene on a weekly basis.
If you had to rank the top five teams according to their current shape, how would this ranking look like?
This is the big question, isn't it? Who is currently in the top five... if you look at recent events, Fnatic, TSM and EnVyUs are definitely leading the way, but if you want to open it up to a top five you have to take into account the likes of Virtus Pro and Na’Vi. Currently, the top five in my eyes, there simply isn't an order as everyone is so close to each other - and that's the real beauty in CS:GO.
Which player was able to impress you the most in recent times?
It has to be Device. His play has not only been consistent, but consistent at the highest level. Throughout the majors he has consistently delivered for his teams. The only slight underperformance was a LONG time ago with the Copenhagen Wolves back in 2013. However, since joining up with his fellow Danes he has truly become a vital player.
Are there also any up-and-coming talents you would like to highlight?
It’s hard to deny some of the upcoming Danish talent, but by now most of the players within the scene are pretty established. I think there are always chances for players to break into the CS:GO scene - there is such a healthy level of competition. I hope to see some new faces soon.
What do you think are the biggest obstacles when trying to achieve greatness as a CS:GO player?
Honestly, the biggest issue right now in my eyes is the fact that there is so much going on - so many leagues, so many events. It’s hard to compete while also looking after your own life. Players are transitioning into full-time eSports positions with support from their organizations, which is making it far better for players.
When looking at the hardware aspects, which things should a CS:GO player focus on for his or her setup?
Personally I think the best way forward for anyone who is wanting to transition into being more of a competitive player would be to look towards a 120hz/144hz monitor - I find it makes a huge difference in a game like CS:GO.
Next to CS:GO, you have been casting numerous eSports titles. What important piece of advice would you give to aspiring pro gamers of any genre?
Be dedicated to your craft. It’s something that you see separates players who want to become professional from the rest. Work to the best of your ability to become the best at what you do, and never stop wanting to learn more.
