Chas -- regarding the Windows 7 rar linked at the beginning of this thread:

If reconstructed, is this a Windows 7 ISO to make up for the windows CD that was not included with the system?

Also; you said use the CD key on the bottom of the laptop. I ran a quick look with Magic Jellybean Finder -- and got a different Registration Key. I wanted to know if that if that is to be expected.

Yes, it's a Win7 ISO that can be used for a fresh install and system repairs.

If the key on the laptop doesn't match what is installed, well, shame on the refurber.

I'm not Chastity, but which webcam is installed?

Go to device manager, double click the camera device to see its properties, go to the "Details" tab, and use the "Property" combobox to choose the "Device instance path" item. What is the text in the "Value" box?

I believe the BB model has the Chicony 1.3M model (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/CMOS_Camera_Chicony/Camera_Chicony_7129_Vista64_Win7_64_615200270.zip) .

Let me know if this works, I'll add it to my driver page.

The key on the bottom of the laptop isn't always the key that Windows is actually installed with. In OEM machines usually they keys on the computer will be generic OEM keys that depend on the SLIC on the motherboard being ASUS OEM. The sticker on the bottom of any OEM computer is usually gibberish.

Very useful thread! I find after I installed using the windows disc provided and installing all of the drivers of the asus driver disc, then updating them here, the computer works a lot better. Thanks a ton!

Hmm. Very oddly, I can't seem to install the Atheros 1.0.0.29 LAN driver on my clean install of the JW. The Atheros drivers from the CD and Asus site are rejected with an error window which says nothing but "Atheros LAN Driver", 1.0.0.27 does the same, and trying to update the Network Controller via device manager says no matching drivers found. Since I did just get a replacement mobo in mine, I downloaded the Intel, Realtek, and JMicron drivers as well in the unlikely event they switched chips in my mobo revision. No dice. Now I might have to restore the system to factory default just to confirm what driver is on there. If it is indeed the Atheros, I'll be damned if I can figure out why it's not installing...

UPDATE:
Update: ARGH!!!!! Just completed the restore and now, for some odd reason, the Network Controller (which worked just fine before the original wipe) is still coming up in device manager as uninstalled!! So now I have neither LAN nor wireless until I can figure out why. "General" tab claims drivers aren't installed with the old "Code 28".

UPDATE 2: No internet via Knoppix either. Terrific... Installing the wifi driver in Win7 cleared all the anomalies out of device manager, meaning the LAN port's not being seen by the system at all. Asus support agrees with me that it appears to be my second bad mobo in a row.

Chastity,

I am not sure if its because maybe the unit you used is different (mine is a RBBX05), but I have a different wireless adapter than the one you list. My adapter is an Atheros AR9285, as opposed to the AR5895 you posted drivers for.

In reference to "Intel TurboBoost Technology Monitor (2.0) & Driver :"

Am I understanding correctly that the driver cannot be installed? If I misunderstood please let me know how to install it. Thanks :)

It can, but it needs to be installed from the Driver CD's Installer application. Apparently there are some parameters passed to the Intel installer that allows it to work properly.

Load up the Driver Disc, and run it's AutoLoader (InstAll.exe) You'll get a listing of what's available, and you want the Intel TurboBoost Driver

It's for all. I'm running .42 on my JH without any issues. Maybe you should uninstall the old one, reboot, and then install the updated version. You can also CCleaner the Registry after you uninstall and Reboot.

Hi, I have a few issues with my JH but I can't lay them all out here since this isn't the right thread.
I'll only talk about my driver issues.
1) I upgraded my Realtek drivers with one I downloaded from [filehippo.com] and right after, my Creative Volume Control stopped working. It keeps giving me the error that "No{something} Found."

I then downloaded all th Creative Drivers for the Asus Support Site and eventually One that Chastity posted somewhere, which led me here.

Anytime I try to install any of the drivers, Nothing happens, Windows just brings up the "Did this program install correctly".

I uninstalled the old one and still nothing seems to happen.

I cleared the registry of all creative keys and still... Nothing.

Any help?

Thanx in advance.

Knowing one's source for driver updates, or really anything for that matter, is really important. I get my links and packages from the manufacturer or Asus directly. Getting them from 3rd party sources like filehippo.com isn't the best idea, since the uploads could be corrupted, infected, and/or modified in undesirable ways.

In your case, I would reboot, and uninstall the drivers first. Then install with the new ones you got from here.

If you uninstalled the drivers, did a driver sweep and a CCleaner on the registry, rebooted and the installer still fails, then you probably should do a fresh OS install, or recover back to factory. It seems the Registry is too fubar for your expertise, and it's hard for me to do that kind of analysis over a forum. Back up your game saves, and personals, and start over from scratch.

I've got a G53JW-XA1, but this seems like a good place to ask, and it may apply to G73's, as well.

Background: Installed SSD, fresh install of Win 7 Pro 64 bit, reinstalled drivers from support.asus.com.

The only "issue" I've come across is the Creative stuff. Here's my scenario:
1) I installed the Realtek Audio Driver (V6.0.1.6181) and the HD audio driver included in the NVIDIA driver (V8.17.12.6114) without any issues.

2) I tried to install the Creative Audigy Driver (V1.0), but it did not complete. Instead, it displayed an error along the lines of "Cannot locate the device".

3) I then downloaded the Creative THX_MUI driver (V1.02). It unzipped into two sub-folders, one named "THX_TruStudio_EAX_Asus_NB_Ref1_RC1-2" and another named "THX_TruStudio_EAX_Asus_NB_Ref1_RC2". Not really knowing what they were, I just installed the setup.exe in the RC1-2 folder. This installed ALchemy and THX TruStudio Settings. When I go to run ALChemy, it gives me an error saying "The audio device required by this application is not detected."

4) So I then pulled out the ASUS driver CD and ran the item listed as "Creative". It ran without displaying any errors and asked me to reboot. Upon reboot, I now had a shortcut to install the EAX gadget, which I did. It doesn't seem to 'do' anything. ALchemy still doesn't work.

I probably don't care about any of this Creative stuff, but I'd like to figure it out if I can.

Thanks in advance!

Chastity@ASUS
01-27-2011, 08:25 AM
I would uninstall everything Creative, and run the Driver Sweeper for Creative.

Then I would install the Creative software from the Driver CD. That should include the THX stuff.

I have a JW coming in next week so that I can confirm what's on there. :)

Chastity - Got it working.

After uninstalling and running Driver Cleaner (which is pretty cool, BTW), I reinstalled via the CD and at first it was still giving me the same errors. Then I realized I had my Logitech USB headset plugged in and unplugged it. That was the trick. I guess ALchemy doesn't work with anything except the analog outputs, speakers, and HDMI out. And EAX reverts to 2.0 for USB devices.

Thanks!

1) go to the sticky here (http://www.asusrog.com/forums/showthread.php?519-G73Jh-GSOD-Vbios-Update)to download the vBIOS update and to get the instructions. You will need to make a bootable USB drive to Win98 DOS (utility included) and then copy the files to it. See the original post for instructions.

2) After the vBIOS is successfully updated, uninstall all things ATI, and download the latest ATI Mobility driver. Links are in the original post of this thread.

Hey There.. Just got a G73Jh-rbbxo5 1.6GHz/8GB RAM/500GB HDD (Best Buy model I believe, Traded my AMD 6-core tower for it). Did a clean install of 7 and have used the drivers off the page for everything, Seems to be working great and running pretty cool (Around 50c on GPU and 45c on CPU, ambient around 22c or 70-75F). Thanks for the quick links and the great layout Chastity. Had a few questions pertaining to the drivers.. Is the keyboard filter required? What will/wont work with/without it? and is the "modded" ATI catalyst install supported by Asus/AMD? Just want to know if you really need all of em, and if everything's going to work/update if updates come out etc..

hi chas tx for ur great guide, i just re-install my g73jh and bump into minor issue

"Intel TurboBoost Technology Monitor (2.0) & Driver : Use the version on the Driver Disc through the Asus Installer Application. Only known way of installing the driver portion. Web download versions reports error on installation."

im installed turboboost monitor 2.0 and im also installed from driver disc and now i have 2 turboboost monitor and the monitor gadget doesnt work.

and for this :
"Alternatives:
[JH] Creative X-Fi MB 1.1 package (30-day trial) Updated for Win 7, and supports Crystalizer and updated Alchemy. Requires licensing $30 to continue to use."

im already installed creative audigy HD should i install creative x-fi also ?

1) Why did you install the monitor twice? You can open up the Gadget Control Panel, and uninstall one of them. For future reference, gadgets do not overwrite themselves when you update them. You just get more gadgets. :)

2) The X-Fi MB software is for people who want more from their Creative application. And the licensing is now down to $19.95 for it.

1. coz u mention before that the web driver is broken, so i installed turboboost monitor 2.0 first then i installed again from installation disc, but it seems that the setup from installation disc contains both monitor + driver or maybe i havent search the right folder for driver installation only.
2. so if i want to install x-fi MB do i need to uninstall audigy HD first or x-fi MB setup works like an upgrade ?

sorry if i'm asking lots of details coz i dont want to ruin my fresh installation lol xD

Chastity@ASUS
01-31-2011, 12:37 PM
No, you did it backwards. You first install the Intel TurboBoost Driver package from the CD. This will install the driver AND monitor. Afterwards, you can update the MONITOR program.

If you want to use the X-Fi MB software, you would first uninstall the Audigy HD software.

Hi Chastity

I am in despirate need of help. :s

I had ccc 11.1 installed and I decided to install 11.1a. My plan was to uninstall ccc via control panel, reboot in safe mode, run driversweeper, cc-cleaner then ati crap cleaner, reboot again, install the original ccc from asus then install 11.1a over that. The problem is that after running driversweeper, cc-cleaner and ati crap remover my computer never rebooted again. It is as if my graphics card is gone, just a black screen without even a flicker of light. I had tried spaming F8 to try and get it into safe mode to let windows load the generic driver and then I would fix it from there, that didnt work. I then tried out of despiration my asus driver cd, that did nothing. I then tried my windows 7 x64 repair disk, that did nothing. I have a external hdd with a full system image, I also have 4 DVDs that a burnt a system image onto the 1st time I used the computer but unfortunatly I have no way of using either of them since I cant see anything. I am sure getting into the BIOS and setting the computer to boot from DVD would help but I have no idea how to navigate the BIOS without being able to see it.

At the moment my beautiful G73jh is nothing more than a flat black paper weight :(

Please any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I FIXED IT!!! As a very last ditch effort I took the lappy appart and removed the cmos battery, held down the power button. After I put it back together she started up. Of course I had to do a system restore from my image but now everything is perfect.

Today when I came home from work I fired up my g73 and it actually started :) Unfortunatly I am still as lost as ever, non of my tray icons show up except for my avira, my GPU Observer & GPUZ both show my 5870 running at 24 degrees c but also still show my card at 700/1000 and pci-e x16 @ 16. I am not sure if something went wrong with my restore image or if something is wrong in the BIOS or vBIOS. I would like to flash both the BIOS' again and redo my restore but I am afraid to do a flash with the current unstable statis of my rig. Besides is it even possible to have a BIOS get messed up from doing a full uninstall/reinstall to update my ccc suite?

@ stitch I am afraid a rtm might be out of the question for me, I am an American nation living in germany and my computer was bought in the states. Also I have repasted both my GPU and CPU with IC Diamond 7. So even if they don't notice the repaste there surely will be loads of redtape and passing the buck on my claim.

ps. I appreciate the sympathy, you know how it is for us: our computers are like a child to us and when it goes bad its like a death in the family :/

I may have missed something, but why are you expecting to see something different than "700/1000 and pci-e x16 @ 16"?

Driver and other software installs do NOT mess with BIOSs...reinstalling the OS doesn't either.

I own a G73JW, and my keyboard got jacked up when I tried to open up the notebook to fix a squeaky noise. So I ordered a new keyboard, and apparently it's G73JH's keyboard. Installed it, and the light worked, but after about 10 min or so, it just suddenly switched off, and I've tried Fn + F4, I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling ATK drivers, also tried Gary's KB fix, but to no avail.

Just wondering if anyone knows how I can get my lights back on? Thanks in advance!

Did the ribbon cable that provides lights power pop out?

Hey Chasity, there's an updated wireless driver for the Atheros wireless:

9.2.0.113

http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=30&system=6

Have confirmed it works just fine and actually seem to get lower latency with it in most apps I've tested it with.

Hey guys, first post wow, I've got my g73jh for more than six months, running on stock drivers apart from 209. Played quite a few games, among the higher requirement ones Metro 2033, Dirt 2, MW2 all on pretty high res and never got a GSOD apart from freezing caused by double sound card drivers which curiously enough appeared about a month ago and were solved in a heartbeat. Anyways, got bored of Dirt2, bought Dirt and got really low fps for no reason. So I figured out it's "Time to nut up or shut up" and kick it hard with complete update (which I'm really slacky at). Is there any reason not going for bios 213 (btw, what are the differences 211/213?)? Then doing graphic card update (Asus or Chastity mod? I usually run my laptop AC without battery in anyways) and then updating all other drivers and probably stress testing the latest catalyst if they will work fine. Sounds like a plan? Any objections? Cheers.

213 was developed to address some people's issue with the keyboard and trackpad not working properly.

Ok, so I updated to 213, and vbios93 (not the modded one) then I uninstalled ccc 9.12, used driver sweeper, installed 11.1, did not detect the card, installed 11.1a still the same... and when I try to reinstall 11.1a sometimes it won't even install properly, leaves empty folders... don't know where the bug is. Seems like 11.1a is a dead end for me...

it seems like the computer cannot detect the graphic card... doubt that I fried it during bios flash, since it was running fine after I booted and was uninstalling 9.12, so I might try downgrading to 10.8 and see...

downgrading to 10.8 helped, card was detected and is running, however I will try to go to 10.12 and see then, any ideas what might be causing it? Cos other ppl got 11.1a and mobility 5870 up and running no prob, even g73jh ..

I would go to 10.11 JohnyF, the 10.12's have bugs. Also IDK why you wouldn't be able to install the drivers. the only issues I had with them were blurry games / text and a lag box in my top right corner.

213 BIOS worked great chastity, not a single missed key thus far

Thanks TO,

I just installed 10.12 and 5870 runs like a baby, 49 idling, which I have never experienced before (usually 55)... even with 10.8. when doing the reinstall it wa idling 55, what bugs specifically you have in mind about 10.12? I might give them a try and see if anything comes up... whats slightly annoying that before my GC was identified as 5870, now it only says 5800 (series)...

TheOriginalTO
02-06-2011, 04:31 PM
I remember SC2 was not playable with them. Maybe you won't have any problems, I just know i did. ATI's Drivers name cards as a series, don't worry about the 5800 series part. That's just how the driver is made, for that specific series. the 9.12 driver was designed by asus for a g73JH though, so it named the card as a 5870. I think that is how it works.

I updated the list for Power4Gear Hybrid. Do not use any of the newer versions on JH/JW systems, as the newer ones will keep your cpu in a C-state, even under Max Performance, and you will lose performance. Use 1.1.37.

No worries. ATI/AMD are terrible for driver packages - sometimes they forget to update the registry key that says which version you're using. Don't worry ... If you installed it, it is installed. If you remove EVERYTHING, and get rid of the registry keys (clean install, or registry cleaner) and then install 11.01, the space for version # will just be blank ... because AMD forgot to make their installer update that specific number.

youll get a better frame rate in games like bad company 2 with the latest realtek drivers. as far as the 257 mod with 1.1 work great. saw your post and updated mine from the modded x-fi 1.1 with 257 mod to the real x-fi 1.1 with 257 mod. games play great and youll get somewhat better sound, i cant confirm that. I noticed werid sound glitchs in starcraft 2 when using the modded x-fi prior towards updating to the realtek mod 257. you can use either 1.1 or the modded x-fi with the mod 257, both sound and play great. i'd get the final word on this from chasity though, just thought id put my 2 cents out there.

Look down in other recent threads....this has been discussed.

At least one camera model seems to perform badly with no reported successful fix, but there's also software that makes performance bad like Asus Virtual Camera for example.

What's the vendor and product ID of your installed camera (you can find this in Device Manager under the details tab for the camera properties - hardware IDs)?

Realtek rarely documents exact changes from 1 revision or another... I'd say if you're running a fairly recent driver and aren't experiencing any issues.. stick with it. Their major revisions often have some good stuff in them, but these minor ones not so much ;)

I personally do it one at a time, but I'm kind of crazy. I'll also reboot after installs if it doesn't ask. I hate when anything goes wrong during installs or setup makes me want to blank and restart.
OS>Drivers>Updates>Apps- virus protection last and let it scan away at both drives and then tweak it the next day for startup power settings etc

I recently bought a new G73JH with an Intel Wimax 6250. Thanks largely to this thread and a couple of others I managed to clean install windows without the bloat. The one thing that I could not get going is the WiFi.

I tried the drivers listed here, the ones at Asus download site and ones from Intel. I even tried Intel's detect hardware Java app...it could not find my card. Device manager tells me that I have a 6250 (plus an unknown network card).

Any suggestions which driver to use and how to install it?

Thanks in anticipation and for a great community, who new setting up a laptop would be such a rigmarole.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I just did an F9 restore (the image has all the rubish on but a working WiFi) didn't really provide munch info. Currently re-re-reinstalling.

I'll give those a go and let you know how I get on.

Oddly whilst that was the correct driver it only installed the Wimax driver and not the WiFi one. The Wifi part of the adapter had a yellow ! mark against it. Also I wonder why it is not labeled ICS_Ds64.exe - the D seems to be to denote that it is 'driver only' which that fie appears to be.

One thing I discovered in all my messing about is a complete version of the Asus Laptop PC Driver Disc in the recovery partition on my laptop. It is V2.0 on my machine and it did at least have some drivers (older) for the WiFi card. The one I downloaded did not. It let me get up and running which made for a better starting point.

You can find a complete copy of the Asus Laptop PC Driver disc V2.0 (on newer laptops) in the Asus AI recovery directory. I guess the older one exists on older laptops.

Thanks for your help Chastity.

Regarding:

v93 VBIOS for HD5870M [JH] to fix GSOD issue need bootable usb flashdrive see instructions in sticky of this forum

Modded v93 vBIOS with lower timings for battery life (updated)

How should I go about updating my vBIOS? Do I update with the v93 OD download link (93vBIOS_OD) and AFTER that is completed, do I do another update with the modded v93? Or do I merge the files from the modded 93 with the 93vBIOS_OD files that I'd place in the flashstick? Or can I only choose one to use? Or is the Modded v93 vBIOS the same as the 93vBIOS_OD and it contains the OD function as well, but it has the lower timings for battery life?

Someone please tell me which is what, so I know what to do so I don't make any mistakes or have to do this multiple times.....since after I updated my video drivers with the newest from ATI, I've been getting the GSOD while before I never had those problems, I had thought after I got my G73JH-A1 back from repair that they did it optionally themselves, but I don't think so now. So, I want to get my vBIOS updated but since there are 2 options, it's a bit confusing because I want whatever is the best and most updated.

You only need to flash once... just pick the version you would like to use, and use the associated .bat file to run the command line.

Hi guys.

About 5 weeks ago I had to RMA my g73jh (VGA card was shot). After being on status: waiting WB/1 waiting for material/spare parts for about 4 weeks I recieved and email from asus stating that the wait for the part will most likely be long and that I now have the option for them to send me a new laptop. I will accept and take the new laptop in place of my old one.

So here is my question. I had the Best Buy g73jh with the 1600x900 display, a single 500GB HDD and the 1.3m webcam the JH they will send me has the FHD 1920x1080 display, the 2.0m webcam and x2 320GB HDDs, will my windows image backup still work?

*edit* I forgot to mention that my Best Buy g73jh had the DL DVD burner and the the new JH they are sending me has the Blue Ray drive

For the JH the Hannstar color profile won't work for the 1600x900 monitor correct? Should I leave it as Generic PnP Monitor?

Also the X-FI is only used as standalone, not with the Creative Audigy 1.0 and Win7 compatibility drivers right?

Thanks for this topic!

I bought a G73Sw and it came with no CD, so this topic was much appreciated :P

I do have a minor question... Before doing a clean install, the device manager listed something like a Creative Eax HD 4.0 as a audio device. I haven't encountered any issues during installing but even thought creative THX trustudio installed fine that something eax 4.0 device isn't listing anymore, just a realtek HD audio device... I`m not even sure if that is a real problem, i still haven't installed any game to test, and the THX studio does recognize my built in speakers as a valid speaker... But i'm not sure if i'm missing a driver or something like that to get proper the proper audio...

Lukas if you have a new machine, I would burn the V2.0 CD from the laptop itself rather than download one. Things went smoother for me once I did that.

03-14-2011, 12:12 PM
Mine hasn't come with any disk, only a notice that the laptop no longer comes with a disk and that i should use the recovery partition, or the recovery disks... I did burned the 6-recovery disks before wiping it all just in case something goes wrong, but i don`t think there's a need to use that as everything went butter smooth...

As for that V2.0 CD, should I have burnt that too? I didn't see anything like that XD

I just wanted to give a heads up that the Realtek 2.58 drivers may cause BSODs in Windows 7 x64. I am running the modded X-Fi 1.0 package with the 2.52 driver version which has been rock solid stable for me. I previously tried to upgrade to 2.57 which was also problematic and caused hard lockups. 2.58 seems to continue this trend as I've gotten a couple of BSODs and hard locks when I switched to that driver revision. I've since reverted to the good ol' 2.52 Realtek HD driver version which I've found to be the most stable.

If anyone else experiences BSODs or hard locks, google for the 2.52 realtek driver revision. I appreciate all of the great work put in here by Chastity to list out the latest and greatest driver versions as I've resolved countless issues by following this thread, but sometimes latest isn't always greatest. :)

Oh, by the way I'm running a G73JH-BST7 (Best Buy model), but I doubt there's any difference in chipsets between the older/newer G73s that would cause driver issues on one and not other models.

YMMV obviously. I am running using the Creative X-Fi package detailed below:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/519478-creative-x-fi-mb-your-g73-realtek-hd-2-48-a.html

I have had issues running newer versions of the drive running with the Creative X-Fi suite. Maybe it has something to do with the combination of the 2, but I personally like having the Creative software which I find provides a sound improvement over the base driver. Perhaps running 2.58 drivers without the Creative software is not problematic, I'm just posting my experiences.

With the 2.58 drivers and the Creative X-Fi suite, I get hard lockups every 2-3 hours with/without BSODs. With 2.52 version drivers installed, I run 100% stable in/out of games.

Just figured I'd give clarification and an update on my specific configuration.

WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIOS 209 and 213???
Difference between 209 and 211 was - to my knowledge - jus higher fan speeds.
Whats new in 213 compared to 209 and 211????

please, if u know, let me know too, else i'll be :(

asus doesnt state the difference on their driver downloadpage.....shame...

Per the below quoted thread:

"Update BIOS. You can check by booting up your laptop and hitting F2 as soon as the Asus logo appears. Once you enter the bios look at your bios version number. If it doesn't say 209, 211, or 213 you should update. 209 and 211 are the same except 211 runs the fans at higher RPMs, so it will keep your laptop cooler at the expense of slightly more fan noise. 213 is the same as 211 but supposedly fixes the keyboard lag issue. As the JH already has temperature issues, I recommend 211 or 213, especially if you live in a hot climate. For this tutorial we will use BIOS 213. ALTERNATIVES are the BIOS 209 and 211, if you want to use those you can download them here. END ALTERNATIVES"

This is from the http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/539984-what-do-your-new-g73jh.html thread post. From the looks of it, it supposedly deals with the Keyboard lag issue. I type pretty quickly and never have missed keystrokes, so I can only speak to my current experience. I am running BIOS 213 though, so maybe the BIOS update does help that.

I should note that I updated my BIOS using the ASUS winflash utility and had no issues at all. Just make sure you have your system plugged in, and flashing should work fine.

Hope this helps.

Chastity@ASUS

213 has the 211 fan speeds + the update info to fix keyboard lag / trackpad issues.

Also, I used Creative X-Fi MB + 2.58 w/o issue. It's uninstalled now since I have the USB HD software installed.

Yeah, I had 2.58 loaded for all of yesterday, but had probably 5-6 hard locks/bluescreens over the course of the afternoon/evening. The lock ups occurred prior to, during and once after gaming (I left the system on overnight and woke up this morning to a bluescreen), so I reverted to 2.52 drivers and have not had a crash/lockup today. I did have similar issues with driver version 2.57 and reverted. I do have the 2.56 version of the ATI HDMI drivers installed, and that seems to be fine. The newer HD Audio drivers though have given me grief.

I must say though, the newer trackpad drivers have helped my touchpad issues considerably, although I do still have moments where my touchpad tends to lose its mind and see all of my touches as being on the far left or right edge of the pad. It always loses its mind after I've been typing for a bit, so I'm sure it has something to do with the fact that my palms tend to rub the edges of the pad, but it's still frustrating when I go back to using the touchpad and I have to mess around with it for a while before it comes back to life.

I appreciate all the work in assembling this thread. It's helped get my G73JH to be completely stable and reliable.

I installed the synaptics v15.2.11.1, everything seems fine, but the application doesn't load with the computer. For instance, I cant scroll with the right side of the trackpad until I actually go into control panel - mouse - synaptics and then it just somehow activates and starts working. I looked in msconfig and there is nothing to start for synaptics, also the icon doesn't appear in the tray even after selecting for it to always be there, the only time the icon will come is if I manually go into mouse in control panel. Then everything works fine. The other synaptics drivers used to work and load by themselves...

I checked the 2 213 links, and both match the hashes. I removed the link for 211 in case it was causing the mixup.

Hey Chastity, great thread; super-convenient and useful! (I'm another NotebookReview.com forum user.)

Quick question: Has anyone experienced BSODs and "hard locks" after installing that newest Seagate firmware? I'm trying to nail down what's been causing these hard lockups I've been getting for the past few days (most have been hard locks, similar to the old Creative issue that caused a system freeze, leaving only the option of hard-resetting), although I finally got a BSOD today (which allowed me to look up the error using BlueScreenView).

I know this isn't the tech support section so I won't ask for a fix here, I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this as well. I've only had one BSOD to gather info from, but it's listing the culprit driver as "ntoskrnl.exe" with an "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" bug string.

I also recently installed the latest Synaptics and ATK packages, but already had the 213 BIOS and almost everything else up-to-date. In fact, I think the only thing on my system that isn't updated is the ATI driver (I'm still using 10.11 because I keep reading that anything after that isn't stable). I am, however, using the first modded vBios that was released (not Chastity's, the other one that was released first).

I'll probably make a thread in the tech support forums, but in the mean time I'm just wondering if anyone is having similar problems. Cheers!

After re-installing Win7HomeP64bit, I have the BSOD issue you have described.
Now, is there a way to obtain the original image with the OS as the laptop came out of the box? Anyone has this image?
G73JW-A1 bought from US.

@Chastity
Hi. Thank you for posting the links and related info. Is there an order these drivers should be installed? I am only installing drivers on a clean Win7 and I get BSOD after few hours of usage - however, I get one only one I try to install something, for instance the DirectX Runtime component ("dxwebsetup").

Thank you.

Assuming you did not delete the Recovery Partition, you can hit F9 during POST to get the Restore Application, and it will restore it to factory state.

does anyone have some issues after installing bios 213?

a BSOD says that the current Bios is not fully acpi compliant... D:

Hit F2 during POST to enter the BIOS, and tab over to the last page. From here there's an option to "Reset to Default Settings" or something like that. Choose this option.

If you are having trouble with 15.2.11.1, then try 15.2.11. You can get 15.2.11 from my keyboard/trackpad package.

Chastity,

I think I remember you saying that Creative Audigy HD MB Windows 7 Compatibility Update makes the Creative Audigy HD MB package 1.0 more compatible with windows 7. When I install the update, are there any options in the Audio Center that will be new or unlocked, that I will now be able to adjust?

I did exactly like you said and it keeps showing that error screen.
Also, I've cleaned CMOS, tryed to boot with less Ram memory, restored the windows, switched back to the BIOS 211 and tryed all the options in F8 screen.

I'm using ubuntu right now and it works like a charm, so I supose the BIOS is fine.
Any other idea to fix this thing?

I would say a clean install of Win 7 would be your best long-term solution. Getting involved with updating HAL profiles is kinda difficult over a forum.

Hello,

Did you see that now Momentus XT Firmware Update SD25 (http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=215451&NewLang=en) is fully automatized ?
You have just to dl the the firmware update utility (http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/downloads/firmware/MomentusXT-ALL-SD25.exe) , no more usb drive is needed, everything is working by itself.

Thanks alot for all,

Chastity, I think you and I mixed up the wifi drivers. When I installed the .310 ones it said all of my wifi connections were G, so i rolled back and now i notice that we were in the wrong section. the section for the AR9285 goes to this as the latest driver 9.1.0.328

/edit wow.... now i'm totally confused... that site station-drivers and Atheros are on totally different pages...

Chastity, I had installed Audio_Realtek_SRS_WIN7_32_64_z6016122 driver from the Asus page. I then uninstalled the SRS seperate portion, because the G73JH doesn't support it. I see on the first page here you have Realtek Audio 2.58 and HDMI 2.55 drivers. I believe the Realtek HD SRS driver from Asus, doesn't include the HDMI driver, but what is the difference between the SRS driver and 2.58?? Do i need to uninstall 6122 and install 2.58?? Thanks.

Anyone have any luck with LAN Atheros AR8131-1.0.0.49 or 1.0.2.51 drivers??

Chastity@ASUS

2.58 is the non-SRS driver package. You would need to uninstall the old driver first, and reboot.

i installed 11.03 ati driver and i got a bsod while installing then on reboot i installed it again and now everything seems fine except that directx is now showing just 716mb on vram instead of 1gb, ati catalyst information page is showing me 1gb. Did i screw sumthin up any ideas?

Also can u tell me wat is da correct way of updating the video drivers,
uninstall old ones then install new or
simply install the new ones over the existing old drivers or
uninstall old driver and use aticrap cleaner/driversweeper to completely remove old driverand then install new?

I just wanted to say a quick thank you to Chastity for these forum posts. I have worked in Tech Support before and understand that it can be nightmarish at best. I was a bit disappointed with I first got my G73jh but when I finally stumbled onto this forum I managed to fix almost all of the issues. Last one to go is the touchpad and hopefully then the lappy will have reached it's potential.

On Asus Support it seems that they have some newer versions of AI Recovery, FancyStart, FastBoot, Power4Gear Hybrid, and SmartLogon. If this was already known, please disregard. Just trying to help out a bit.

What does the DVD GT30N_ASS2 firmware, that is also on Asus page, fix??

I'm currently using AR813x_AR815x_v1.0.2.51_WHQL for my AR8131, that's the newest current driver correct?

Also the Intel Chipset is now at 9.2.0.1030. I installed over previous chipset drivers althought I didn't see an installs of any drivers is just goes to the next page and says it's finished.

Hey Chastity, I kept forgetting to post a link to this in case you think you might want to include it as an "optional" download in the driver reference page...

Have you ever tried the modded drivers for Atheros Wi-Fi cards (all chipsets, apparently) from the community over at LaptopVideo2Go? Here's a link to the thread:

http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/15297-latest-atheros-modded-driver-for-windws-7-vista-and-winxp/

I stumbled upon this thread a few months ago and figured "what the heck, might as well try it out," and to my surprise, the latest modded driver for the Atheros card in my G73-A1 actually worked quite well! Of course, performance gains are usually always subjective (especially with something like wi-fi), but I experienced an increase of ~1000 Kb/s down, and ~500 Kb/s upstream. After installing, I also noticed a significant boost in reception stability.

In addition, the modded Atheros driver supports a bunch of new options and configurations via the Device Manager that aren't accessible with the stock driver; things like "transmit power," more "mode" options, supports full 3x3 aerial mode, more powersave options and a bunch of other tweaks. In fact, here's an example of what's available after installing the modded driver (just copied from a poster on the forum listing his/her personal settings):

11d Mode Switch = Disable
802.11 Bluetooth High Speed = Enable
802.11 Preamble = Long and Short
Adhoc 11n = Off
Adhoc Channel Select = 11
Antenna Switch = Auto
BackgroundScan On/Off = Off
Dynamic NMO Power Save = Disable
Green Tx = Off
Map Registers = 256
MFP = Disable
Network Address = Not present
pcieAspm = L0s Off, L1 Off
Power Save Legacy Algorithm = PS non Poll
Power Safe Mode = Normal
Power Save Policy (Background) = Legacy Power Save
Power Save Policy (Best Effort) = Legacy Power Save
Power Save Policy (Voice) = Legacy Power Save
Radio On/Off = 256
Receive Buffers = 256
Roaming Policy = Very Low
roamRateA = 24mpbs
roamRateB = 9 Mbps
roamRateBOnly = 5Mbps
roamRssiA = 15
roamRssiB = 24
roamRssiBOnly = 8
RSSI Threshold = Min
Scan Valid Interval = 60
Transmit Buffers = 512
Transmit Power = 100%
Wireless Mode = 11 abgn (40Mhz)

It's definitely worth checking out... The only drawback is that it seems like the community is a little slow in updating the modded driver to the newest official driver. As of today, the latest modded version is still v9.2.0.105 (modded "INF v1.31" for both Vista/Win7 x86 and x64). However, it might be worth it for some people (myself included), because I believe the benefits of the modded driver are far more substantial.

About the 2 DirectX updates as well as the DirectX Redist Package (June 2010), I believe they are not needed for the users that have updated to Windows 7 SP1 since the version of DirectX is newer in SP1. I was wondering about this since if not I'd update my DirectX with the Redist package. Thought I haven't because of the newer version of DirectX i'm using currently.

Have you tried setting the router to mixed mode? I'm by no means an expert with wi-fi, but I think if your router is NOT dual-band (20 and 40 Mhz), setting it to N-only might have some sort of adverse effect (maybe something also to do with other wireless connections in other PCs in your house that are G-only? I'm just trying to remember something I read once...)

Do you still get a max of 70 mbs when you set the router to "mixed mode" or whatever setting allows legacy connections (ABG) as well?

All my other laptops have N wireless cards, and the router is dual-band ( 30 and 40 Mhz ). The distante is not a problem , the router is very close.

Okay, but just to make sure, you DID try setting the router to mixed mode (and it didn't work)? If not, just humor me...only takes a second to check... I had a similar problem and even though my router is single-band and not dual-band like yours, my problem was fixed when I set it to mixed mode, whereupon I was able to achieve a reported 150 mbs...

Otherwise the last thing I can suggest is checking your wireless card settings via the device manager (right click the wireless card > properties > advanced, and then make sure all your settings are correct (for the "correct" values, you'll have to use Google; I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell ya).. But especially check the "Wireless Mode Selection" option, and if you only have two options ("Auto" and "802.11 b/g"), I think it should be "Auto," obviously... Sorry I can't help you more than that, but maybe someone else who knows more will post a solution.

EDIT: If you still need help, this might seem obvious, but your best bet would probably be to call Linksys tech support -- I had a Linksys router once so I know they offer free phone tech support, although you'll probably have to deal with a lot of obvious "by the book" troubleshooting with them, since as we all know, they troubleshoot from a "script" or some other SOP. Second option would be to hit a few more forums all at once, post everything you've posted here (along with what you've already tried)... Besides for general tech support help forums, there are dedicated wi-fi and networking forums as well...

EDIT 2: One last thing came to mind, although I don't think your reported mb/s can be affected by it, although maybe it's worth a try. Have you tried changing your router's broadcast channel? Aside from potentially boosting your range, reception and wireless quality, maybe it could play a factor? A quick way to do it is just to change it to the oppositte of what it is now; if your router's broadcast channel is set to 1, change it to 11 and see if you gain any improvement, or vice-versa. Or try 6. To get a better understanding of how to set your broadcast channel to the optimum one, use a free tool like "inSSIDer" (Google it), which will give you a visual and numerical representation of all the wireless channels around you.

The goal is for you to pick the one that's used the least by your neighbors, but usually you only want to use 1, 6 or 11 regardless. However, Wireless N uses a different system than what I've just described, which is for ABG... Still, even with N, your signal can overlap with existing wireless connections and a multitude of other things (though less in the 40 Mhz range, as I understand it). Can someone chime in who knows more about this than me?
