The GTX 680 was demoed yesterday at the Game Developers Conference by Mark Rein of Epic Games. He ran the Unreal Engine 3 Samaritan demo on a single GTX 680; a feat that required three GTX 580s this time last year.

Impressive stuff !

Nvidia can take all the time they want, I don't plan purchase a new GPU before next September, but for sure tax refund will come soon for many peoples, so it will be a great time to launch it.

It ran the Unreal Engine 3 Samaritan demo but I wonder what the results were/ 2 fps, 10, 20...

Look forward to seeing the numbers this card will produce.

I doubt they'd brag about running it if it wasnt atleast at playable FPS.

We need more powerfull GPU, but they have to find a way to make them to use less electricity. It's nice to have 2 big GPU in SLI, but when you are not gaming and just chating here, they produce way too much heat.

Don't they have it now where if you have 2 cards in sli and arent gaming it'll shut down one of the cards? or is that something new thats comming up with Keplar, blah, sometimes i take in way too much technical info so sometimes info gets mixed up or lost lol. As apealing as SLI seems, i honestly don't feel a need for it as I only use a single monitor, I think if i were to ever have 2 cards in my system, I'd have a main card for the main and a 2nd for a dedicated physx gpu. I'm curious why they havent started moving towards multi core gpu, like a single chip sli solution or have some cores handle rendering, and others handle physx.

Fermi is designed to power down when not in 3D use, Nvidia implemented this with the 200 series.

When i went to build this PC I was torn between trying to hold out for keplar, but with delays and the fear of another round of the series 400 issues, i bit the bullet and settled on a 580, which I'm very happy with mind you. But in hind sight i also covered my butt by going with a Evga 580 vanilla that was covered under the Step UP, just in case, as I don't have alot of money to buy a whole new card on a whim. I got lucky when i found someone to buy my old PC for not much less than i payed for it 2 years ago :D, but the PC before that ( still runs but) I used for almost 8 years, <3 my old athlon xp 3200 and my BFG 6800 ultra( died 3 months prior to my 965 BE build 2 years ago) if I had my way and had unlimited funds for PC upgrades on a whim, I'd have gotten a matrix 580, then if the 680's were what they claimed they'd be I'd just buy new when they came out. Also, when considering the high end 580's , it was a toss up between the Matrix, and the Evga Classified Ultra, if keplar wasnt in the waiting, it would have been for sure the Matrix hands down. not to mention the day before i started ordering from newegg the Matrix was out of stock, and after planning my build for 2 months prior I was pretty quick with clicking check out lol.

From what I can see, I play only BF3 ( and only few hours ) I will take the ENGTX of my son and give him a GTX680 , he like Skyrim ( finally after 4 months) BF3 run fast enough on a 580, I can play on 3 monitors, it's to hard for my eyes with eye glasses , do a 580 on a 1920 x 1200 is perfect

I've got so many games that I played on my 285 that i want to try on my 580, but with all the ROGn and tryin to help my friends son out with his PC, and kids, and work bleh.

Did a search 10 minutes ago. I couldn't believe that it came out yesterday. I had to grab one as they are sparse. I'll get another next month if I am pleased with it's performance and such.

Running a trifire 7970 in my main box and two GTX 590's in another. Can't wait to do the comparison benchmarking! I anticipate a photo finish.

Getting ready for a new build and I have been looking at MOBO's. I think I just can't find anything better than the Rampage (or another ASUS; although love the LGA 2011/X79) nothing has proven better or even close. The top five motherboards listed on the 3DMark website are all ASUS not one other brand/manufacturer listed.

I'll post/compare the bench results in the forum when I get the 680.

The one good thing about the 680 cards is that they run a little cooler than my 7970 cards. Performance from my perspective is still AMD. Mainly because of the huge over-clocking headroom advantage the 7970 brings. But I am not a typical user.

Turns out that as of now the 680's don't run at Gen 3. I believe the drivers included on the installation DVD (not as stable) will be post release drivers won't. I am assuming they will fix this. Hopefully sooner than later.

"GeForce GTX 680 supports PCI Express 3.0. The Intel X79/SNB-E PCI Express 2.0 platform is only currently supported up to 5GT/s (PCIE 2.0) bus speeds even though some motherboard manufacturers have enabled higher 8GT/s speeds."

Of course I never read this before ordering the cards..... Lol. Typical.

I will not worry to much about this 3.0 thing, it's seems that 3.0 as been marketed way before it was really supported, Asus are probably the last on to blame, it's MSI and Gigabyte who start the marketing of the 3.0 on their board. I think it was Raza or Brian ( probably both ) at the time who said that 3.0 is far from be ready, that no 3.0 GPU as been manufactrurer and tested, he was dam right.

Was unaware of that. Good to know. I'm assuming Nvidia wanted to get those cards out sooner than later just because of the 7970's.

My assassin was probably part of 3.0 rush you mention. ASUS boards are by far superior IMO. Waiting on Ivy Bridge although I have that itch to build NOW. Nothing would exceed this Rampage rig.

Yeah guilty as charged but I think the advanced release is not as good at the retail in that case. Not a happy bunny at the moment. LOL

Just waiting on two ASUS GTX680's selling my GTX590 to make way current wait over here in Australia is still going to be 2-3 weeks for some suppliers and due to the lower power consumption I wont have to change my PSU which is a bonus, and less heat overall I am eager to see what temps and performance I will see. Playing mostly BF3, as I play that 90% of the time.

Ok., so off the bat:
3930k standard
BF3 RIVE board
Corsair Vengeance 2ghz DDR3
Intel 520 SSD,

I got P9532 in 3DM11 with 1 x 680

With my 2x580 i got with the exact same settings as above, P11800.

Not to bad at all, with a bit of oc'ing i might hit what my 580s did in SLI :)

Hard2Kill
03-24-2012, 11:38 PM
Well with my system and the GTX590 I reached a 3DM11score of 10282 which isnt to bad at all but having 2xGTX680's will see an improvement on that score but hopefully by alot more.

Well, I'm officially in queue for my Step UP # 469, and including shipping, its gonna cost me 39.45 $ and after reading a bit more I was wrong about the warrenty, my new 680 will have the full warrenty, I'm still unsure if i'd be able to step up after that, but I doubt the 780's will be out before my 90 days is up, tho who knows. But maybe when that happens I'll give my evga 680 to my wife, and get an Asus 780 :D

I know its only a sticker or 2, but I have to say the EVGA card looks better ( and is cheaper here in the UK? )

Chris Manico
03-25-2012, 07:24 PM
My original reasoning for going with EVGA was the warrenty, and step up program, when I got my 580, i knew the 680 would be out within the 90 day step up period. prior to that consideration, my choices ere between the asus matrix 580, and the evga gtx 580 classified ultra, with that came between using the triple slot Matrix, or getting the dual slot with with lifetime warrenty. I posted else where that with video cards I never know when i'm going to be able to get new again so i take alot into consideration when i get one.

as far as pricing in the UK goes I"m not sure as I'm in US, and at this point it seems all the cards are referene cards and all the same specs. so at this point i really don't think one card would be any better than another, i't wont be till they start pimping the 680 out and start binning gpu and ram chips for higher Performance parts.
