I have a WD My Passport 1 TB USB 3.0 external HDD and when I attempt to copy large (over 20 gig) files to it, it always fails in the copy, when plugged in to the 3.0 port. I can put it in a 2.0 port and it works flawlessly. I have not had the opportunity to try a different USB 3.0 cable yet, but I will.

Has anyone else had this issue?

I just tried it with a Seagate 1TB USB 3.0 external HDD and the copying failed again. Same cable though, so I will try that.

Install the latest Fresco Logic USB 3.0 driver. Get it here: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?5224-Drivers-Apps-and-How-to-s&country=&status= I believe that resolved a similar issue for another user.

It got further in copying before Windows lost the drive and the copy failed.

Pardon me while I grab some pliars and remove that useless Asus update from my notebook.

I was not even aware of the newer drivers.

You could.also try installing ASUS Ai Charger Plus. It increases the voltage in the USB 3.0 port. This may help if the USB drive derives power from the USB port.

Alternatively, it may be possible to just enable USB Charging in the BIOS.

Many thanks for the ideas and I will try those.

Your suggestions lead me to think that the port is not getting enough power.

Can that be the case with the 3.5" HDD also?

Lost ALL USB functionality. The following code is for the Fresco USB 3.0 as well as for the Intel USB ports. A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality. (Code 32)

So none of your USB ports are working at all? 3.0 or 2.0? Are they still listed in Device Manager?

Many have surmised that this is a power issue...but it would have no relationship to the power supplied to the SATA ports.

If you can, try this:

Open Device Manager
Uninstall all USB devices
Restart your computer. Windows will detect the USB devices and install its own drivers.
Install Fresco USB 3.0 driver 3.5.24.0 (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/Drivers/USB3.0/USB3_Fresco_Win7_64_Z35240.zip), and then the ASPatch included in the package

+1 Brody! It was the new Fresco Logic driver plus the ASPatch that resolved the USB 3.0 HDD issue for that other user.
The ASPatch was the key.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123 discusses the Code 32 error.

I had been toying with the idea of doing a clean install anyway, so that USB error in Device Manager gave me a better excuse to do the clean installation. I still have the previous install imaged and may put that back on after I get this clean install completed and imaged.

Guys, thanks very much for your ideas and input.

You're welcome, @BullSpit! I think you'll prefer the clean Windows installation.

I try to install drivers from Safe Mode to disable other running drivers that may potentially interfere with the installation.

Same issue with a clean install. I was defregging My Passport 1 TB and Windows lost it. The ASPatch is installed as well.

I'd try a different (preferably shorter) cable now that these software fixes are eliminated.

It may also be useful to test the drive on another machine.

Does the drive have the latest firmware?

Anything telling in the System Event Log from when the drive was lost?

How responsive is your mouse after this new Fresco driver?

I installed it back when brodyboy suggested it first, and though it fixed the issue with transfering large data over USB3.0, my mouse is now not as responsive. RIght after startup, the mouse keys work but it takes a while before the actual cursor starts moving. And I swear, periodically, for like 0,1seconds, it turns off because mouse control is not as fluid as it used to be.

That behavior sounds like DPC Latency. Run DPC Latency Checker to troubleshoot.

Also, confirm your touchpad is disabled.

Seems to be around 300-400microseconds generally.

Any tips on lowering it?

I wouldn't worry about it at those levels. If you get yellow or red spikes, you try uninstalling drivers (the new Fresco Logic driver might be a good start in your case) to see if DPC Latency is reduced.

Rather than pasting all the above questions, I will answer them.... No issues with the mouse in the least, Logitech G7. I will update the firmware on the HDD, I had not thought of that. If I am seeing correctly, WD has new firmware for it. The cable is fairly short, only about 12" at the most. I will try it with another as soon as I am able. I am doubting that it is the drive(s), since the same thing happened with a Seagate USB 3.0 HDD as well. Same cable though.

Do these drives derive their electrical power from the ports themselves? If so, there are 2 options. One is a 2 male end USB cable that plugs into 2 USB ports. One provides both data and power and is plugged into the USB 3.0 port. The other is plugged into a USB 2.0 port and provides power only.

The other option is ASUS Ai Charger Plus, which also boosts electrical power from the USB 3.0 port.

I still think it may be worthwhile to examine the System and Application Event Logs for Warnings or Errors when the drive fails.

I would use the shortest USB cable supplied by the manufacturer for the specific USB HDD.

I would also confirm any power saving options are disabled for troubleshooting purposes and possibly even uninstall Power4Gear.

As for DPC Latency, if you see one red spike during a copy or defrag operation, it could be enough to disconnect the drive.

The firmware update on the WD My Passport appears to have corrected the issue that drive was having. I have copied at least half a TB of data to and from it with no issues. It is a 2.5" drive and uses the power from the USB port and cord.

The Seagate is a 3.5" drive that has external power. No firmware updates for it though. As soon as I can get a different cable, I will try it with the Seagate.

Many thanks gents!

I did some snooping in the Asus FTP server and found newer Fresco drivers.

I noticed other new drivers dated 3/14/2012 for the G74SX on the ASUS FTP link supplied by BullSpit.

Realtek Audio Win7_64_Z6016564.zip,
Intel Bluetooth Win7_64_Z1300621_Z109020620.zip
Power4Gear Hybrid_WIN7_64_Z120.zip
Splendid Win7_64_Z1020040.zip
Synaptics Touchpad Win7_64_Z153430.zip
USB 3 Freco Win7_64_Z35300.zip

I was wondering if anyone has tried these.

These are the drivers listed on the G74 support page. Like many owners, I avoid bloatware like PG4 and Splendid, and I source most of my drivers directly from their manufacturers, so I'm already using more recent versions than those.

The only drivers I source from Asus are the Fresco, Sentelic, and ATK drivers, and I have no issues with my current USB 3.0 driver, so I'm not changing it. (Owners using the Azurewave wireless adapter also have to get their WLAN & BT drivers from Asus.)

BrodyBoy... I did notice an ATKACPI package Version V1.0.0015 listed on ASUS G74X download in the Utilities section of the members page. I am running v1.0.0014. Wondering what is new and if I should update (best way possible)... Thanks

IDK if this thread is still active, but I've been having the same issues: USB 3.0 external HDD will connect, I'll attempt to transfer data, and after a few short moments, the drive will disconnect and reconnect. Very frustrating.

I've tried a number of Fresco drivers listed, among other advice listed in this thread.
3.5.30.0
3.5.4.0
3.5.24.0

A note- I could never tell if AsPatch10430001.exe had run correctly. I ran the addpatch.bat and a cmd line popped up briefly.

Anyone willing to help out would be greatly appreciated.

That's what the AsPatch executable does, so it sounds like it did run properly. I don't want to go back and read the whole thread to see what other advice/fixes you're referring to, so could you briefly summarize what measures you've already attempted?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Like I said I went through multiple driver versions.

I have Asus AI Charger installed.
I ran DPC Checker and found nothing wrong.
I also tried to update the HDD's firmware, but it was already up to date.

I don't have another cable to test with, but I ordered a Y cable that should hopefully give it some extra juice if that's the problem.

HDD seems to run fine on another laptop I have with USB 3.0.

Well I have the same problem with WD MyPassport 2T USB3 drive.

I have run through a number of Fresco driver versions, namely at least

3.0.108
3.0.114
3.5.24
3.5.30
3.5.46
3.5.56

and the 3.5.30 seems to work best but it is still not very reliable. Every a couple of GB drive will disconnect and reconnect. WD firmware is the latest version. I hope someone will come up with a solution.

Bumping this thread up as well. MY USB 3.0 works, but is not recognized as a 3.0 drive, and only reads at 2.0 speeds. I have not experienced any of the disconnection issues that other users have mentioned, though. Also, I've had the computer for almost 9 months and have had this issue since out of the box. I ordered the laptop custom with no bloatware installed.

Just tried installing 3.5.4.0. Going to try removing all USB drivers completely, starting again and running 3.4.56 + AsPatch...

Went through, uninstalled all the drives, went into bios and enabled USB-CHARGE, and installed 3.5.4.0. I wasnt given the windows "This drive may perform faster if plugged into a USB 3.0 port" message this time, and transfer starts at around 55MB/s, but levels off at 40MB/s. Sometimes it even slows to less than 20MB/s. This seems awfully slow...

Nobody has anything? I figured/was hoping someone would have found a definite workaround for this...

I too have these random disconnect issues. I have tried disabling Windows Power Management of the USB 3.0 hub, (but it always returns to the default of "enabled" after restart) updating drivers, adding USB charge, removing USB charge, adding P4G, removing P4G... on and on...

Its really annoying, because I use my rig for DJing & VJing and I use a USB 3.0 drive as external storage for my media. When the drive is randomly booted, it crashes the software I am using. It would be amazing if ASUS & Fresco could get there collective heads out of their collective asses and resolve this.

I'm using an Hitachi Turio Pro USB 3.0 7200RPM 2.5in Drive, and have checked with Hitachi - there are no firmware updates for the drive.
